Outstanding power on this engine. 100% agree this probably the best pulling steam engine lines made that has a single motor. I was able to pull 49 cars today- no issues - to lazy to get 10-12 more. Comb of Atlas, MTH, Lionel 36 & 40 ft box cars.
@@daivdwalker2374 not everyone come with the elephant ears / smoke deflectors The 614 I just got did not. You should probably refer to the 2022 Vol 2 catalog as they described the features. The one Eric has, the 612, I didn’t know that Lionel provided them.
Fun fact: C&O No. 614 (612's sister locomotive) was originally intended to receive a similar streamline package and paint scheme to pull the 'Chessie' passenger trains with a front cowling similar to that seen on C&O no. 490. However, the streamline package was removed from 614 prior to her leaving Lima in June 1948 since the 'Chessie' passenger service was cancelled by the C&O. This saved roughly 5,000 additional pounds on 614 and saved an additional 3,000 pounds on 614's tender. I found this information in the C&O Archives when researching my new book released this year on 614 in honor of her 75th anniversary (June 1948 - 2023): 'The Chesapeake & Ohio No. 614 Legacy: The Rise and Fall of an American Railroad Legend"
I wish I had the curves for this. I think Lionel should do a LionChief 2.0 model for every Legacy full scale engine they bring out or at least the bigger ones
After doing about 5 minutes worth of research on your channel, I came to the conclusion that this locomotive is tied for first place as the strongest rigid frame locomotive you've tested on your channel. The other locomotive being a Union Pacific 4-12-2 9000 class.
I'm glad C&O named their 4-8-4 locomotives after a hotel that is a part of their history. That hotel shares its name with my hometown, and is even spelled the same. 5 pounds, five ounces of PULLING POWER? That's NUTS!
Just got the 614 version and it pulled my 7 K Line KCC K441521C Streamlined Heavyweight Passenger cars with ease. I added just for kicks the Lionel NYC ESE 4 car set and found the same results. Killer power. Well done by Lionel. My cover was also taped on as I think Lionel didn’t want it bouncing around.
Note: While today we mainly call 4-8-4's "Northern's" after the Northern Pacific which was the first railroad to operate 4-8-4's. During the era these engines ran they were usually not named Northern's with most railroads having their own names for the wheel arrangement. This ranged from the D&RGW and Santa Fe calling their 4-8-4's Mountains like their 4-8-2's to railroads like the NYC, SP, and C&O with names like "Niagara" "Golden State" and "Greenbrier" just to name a few.
Well congratulations 🍾on this major acquisition. So this locomotive is my favorite Steam Engine Lionel has done in recent years. Was so hoping that you ordered one and would do a deep dive and you didn’t disappoint! Absolutely beautiful engine. The silver color really showcases all of the glorious detail . I think the pipe detail under the cab is just amazing. So thank you for the video on this model. Can’t wait to see how the special consist looks when it arrives for this engine. What a beautiful locomotive!
I'm with you - the paint scheme is the BFIMO. Thanks for sharing. Will also be interesting to compare the MTH to the Lionel passenger cars when they arrive.
10:52 In 1991, N&W 1218 pulled a short mixed train from Cincinnati to Portsmouth, Ohio consisting of its auxiliary tender, a baggage car, a vista dome car, a hi-cube boxcar and 4 autorack cars
I bought one as well, beautiful locomotive. My locomotive and tender came wrap in the clear plastic wrap not the lionel plastic wrap, I wonder if was manufactured in a different factory 🤔. Thanks for sharing
This a very pretty engine and the passenger cars are great. My son has the MTH Greenbrier which is a very nice running engine. Great detail. Orange silver is great combination. Nice shot on the camera riding on top. It gives a nice view. Jh
Gorgeous execution of color, detail, sound, and pulling power. Congrats to Lionel for what will probably be one of the most iconic locomotives they have ever produced. I would think that most purists would have bought this loco in one of its black liveried versions, so this unique fantasy item will most likely prove to be rare and much sought after in fifty or a hundred years hence. This unusual Greenbriar is a spectacular blend of the model maker's art, and the fantasy niche of our hobby, resplendent in its exotic make believe paint scheme that just screams "toy train". Thanks, Eric for another well done video. The pure joy you effused as you put this engine on the rails for the first time was truly heartwarming. Your enthusiasm for our hobby strikes a pure chord for all of us that love three rail O scale trains. See you at October York. ColoradoBear
What a gorgeous locomotive!! Like you said, the orange and silver colors pop! I look forward to when you get the matching passenger cars that go along with it and see the train in its entirety. The nighttime shots are absolutely amazing. Seeing all of the lights on the locomotive and passenger cars all lit up looks very cool. You get to see it in a whole new look. Great stuff Eric!
That Greenbrier is absolutely stunning! I do appreciate how Lionel gives you the options of whistles because I don’t think the hooters fit the Greenbriers at all. That being said Lionel might finally produce a prototypical C&O Kanawha using MTH’s tooling, and I think the hooters would be perfect for that. I’d love it if they made a few different versions of 2716!
Eric, I would recommend you use an Ontario knife next time. They recently got bought out, and closed up their shop in NY, and they're moving business to Virginia.
Just got my preorder in and the dome came off scratched the paint on the hand rails but thankfully nothing broken going to get sliver paint to touch it up
3:12 I swear Lionel’s steamers are getting “smaller” every so often. This Greenbrier looks like a 1:68 scale model in this shot. I just took delivery of my USSF ES44AC from Legacy Station and it feels like a true 1:48 scale model. Even my weathered Commodore Vanderbilt 777 (6-18067) feels like a true 1:48 scale steamer.
@@EricstrainsI figured it out. I recently took delivery of a Marklin 85509 Museum Prussian T3 in 1-Gauge and I haven’t ran 1-Gauge in a while, so when I took the engine out of its box, I realized how larger 1-Gauge was to O-Scale. I had to place it next to my Lionel 777 Commodore Vanderbilt to understand how larger things have gotten. 🤣
Now I kinda wish I pre-ordered one. They are stunning for sure. Not that I have any c&o passenger cars, nor a pile of money left over from the Challenger hahaha 😌

Hi Eric! I'm Josh and I'm using my mom's account. I noticed that your orange BNSF auto-carriers match the Greenbrier! Maybe there are unlettered ones with the orange paint available? Eric, I have sort of asked about this before. A locomotive like this is impresssive, but can recent Lionel products be considered as "Fine Scale"? There is something a little toy-like about them, or is that the charm of Lionel?
There are certainly other makers, such as 3rd Rail, who produce trains that have more fine detail than Lionel, but I would consider Lionel's upper end products to be reasonably finely detailed. The thing that probably makes it seem more toylike is that Lionel trains run on 3-rail track and also use larger-than-scale couplers. This is a tradition that goes back to the early 20th century. I personally like the 3-rail track and large couplers because it reminds to not take this hobby too seriously. It's about having fun...at least for me it is. Everybody's different.
