According to local folklore, the pass is named after a woman named Sela, who was a devout follower of the 6th Dalai Lama. The pass is known for its breathtaking views, the serene Sela Lake, and its strategic importance.
Sela Tunnel is a road tunnel at 3,000 metres which ensures all-weather connectivity between Guwahati in Assam and Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh. This tunnel is the longest bi-lane tunnel in the world at 13,000 feet
