- Furthur ft. Trey Anastasio playing Scarlet Begonias & Fire on the Mountain at LOCKN' Festival in Arrington, VA on September 7, 2013.
As an ageing UK music fan and one who saw the Grateful Dead on the two London gigs which contributed to the 1972 Live in Europe triple album, I hadn't heard of this band (I'm a bit behind the curve these days) but I was impressed to find a band which so catches the spirit of The Dead - lovely ringing guitar solos n' all. RIP Jerry, your spirit lives on.
We worship Trey!
This band does not exist anymore but the bass player and guitar player are from the Grateful Dead and the redhead dude is Trey Anastasio, a guy from a band called phish that’s kinda like the dead
Furthur has been around a while. I saw them 10-12 years ago and they were great. Dead and co, Phil lesh and friends, and wolf bros are more active these days.
@@williamconway7313 also isn’t the singer from dark star orchestra, a dead cover band?
@@07BSPtC yeah, his name Johk Kadlecik,
One of my favorite incarnations as the music moved furthur. And it just keeps going!❤
John is the bomb! As is this whole lineup
John should have been playing at Fare thee Well. Too Bad Kreutzmann did not want him there. Damn Shame. JK is amazing. Further Rocked.
I'm impressed with this band. So many other incarnations just seemed to go through the motions without the soul and feeling. This one is really feeling it!!!
It’s Phil dude… I know what you’re saying… it’s Phil making this song. Check out 5/8/77 and you’ll see what I mean.
It is Russo. Russo is keeping the time up, and he is such a busy, busy drummer. But it pushes the beat and moves it forward. Phil has soul, and that helps (he is off time a lot, and misses time, but he has great melodies, so whatever), but the juice comes from Russo.
I miss Furthur
I Miss Jerry!!!
I would only 9,000 times rather hear this band (with or w/o Trey) than Dead & Co.
I miss furthur too
@@danbennett2891 You are so sad.
Phil's smile alone is worth the price of admission..
I remember this I literally had been stuck on my tapestry tripping as soon as this came on we were all up and grooving
ride the wave babe
Bring this band back instead of Dead &Co
Wow, John Kadlecik ist really good.
12:00ish / The stick flip and Jordan tongue Russo gives Trey is fn amazing. Love that dude
Gold
that was freekin awesome dude. Russo is a great player and in the zone on that one no doubt.
Russo is so fucking good. He sounds like two drummers and a secondary percussion kit all in one. Insane
I can see it took the dead awhile to reset after the loss of Garcia. It's a big commitment to start over after such a loss. I am glad they engaged with Anastasio and Mayer. Each have contributed to passing these legendary tunes to current and future musicians. Who knows, the next 15 year old Jerry may be listening to this in his bedroom inspired to make his contribution.Soon to meet that next lyrical genius Hunter. Hope I am alive long enough to discover when it arrives.
John K, Kimock and Jimmy have contributed more than either of them
@@MrMattyswift Yes, but this guy is new though haha cut him a break
It is Billy Strings
@@MrMattyswift Calm down.
John is incredible
John played and complimented trey so well here. Love his voice on the guitar.. very jerry but very John k too.. tasty playing
Phill Lesh is so underated bass player!
under rated by whom?
I was gonna say....NOT in my universe. For there he is a god amongst mortals.
@@frederickwinters7277 most bass players to be honest. I know lots of great funk bassist that don’t much about Phil Lesh. I do agree though.. real bassist can respect this mans insane sense of groove that’s completely unique.
@@novakaya Phil Lesh is fantastic, but before I became a Deadhead, Chris Squire (RIP) ruled.
Believe he had a classical background pregunta
Further ruled!
I am so used to dawna kicking in on course, it was amazing how smooth it is here.
ALL HAIL PHIL LESH!!!!!!!
A musical god among mortals
Behold! We are powerless under the cast of thine majestic thunder !
A true master.
So weird I grew up never hearing him mentioned with Squire, Lee, Entwhistle, McCartney….. he deserves to be there
Furthur: *best* post-Jerry lineup
dead & co. is far superior imo
@@LucaTalkinBoutIf you prefer falling asleep.
John doesn't leave much room for other people to play.
He was the lead guitarist on this run. Bobby just does his thing and Trey was just sitting in and didn't want to outshine.
John gives Trey 4 bars to get going & Then can’t help himself & starts noodling. Trey didn’t seem to be feeling his mojo
Trey usually lays low when he sits in with others I've noticed... like he doesn't want to outshine
If Joe Russo beats those drums any harder, I'm calling the cops
He kills it
Those cops are from Heaven you know
Dead to the core
Kind of miss furthur
There's too many people wearing sandals.....but this is great music!!!
I always wonder about who directs these things. When Trey shreds, they show, Jon, or the band and when Jon shreds they show Trey or Bob or a crowd shot. The director has no feel for the band and for rock and roll preferring to show off their ability to switch needlessly to show us who is boss.
Gee wiss I just discovered this track and absolutely lost my shit super good
I've never seen an Alembic headstock like the one J.K. has on his guitar.
I think it’s a bass style headstock they have
11:31 That Was Great
Amazing
Reading the comment it seems everyone is an expert Deadhead
If Joe beats those drums any harder, I am calling the cops
Joe Russo is a beast - check out Joe Russo's Almost Dead
Never heard of them.
Trey plays Bobby’s part in this one, very perfectly Yi might add, he takes on Jerry’s parts in FTW, and a couple times with Phish.
I like it ! :P
So much better then dead and co
You are the man bro! Peace!
Ted Lafforthun I have seen 35 ×3 with 3 day shows in D.C. Eugene, Or in the Ducks home. Also, The Jerry Band. If you have kids "Just for kids" Jenny Jenkins
Ten fold.
I happen to disagree with you but this is still absolutely wonderful. As is often the case Jeff C shines. And Joe Russo is a monster. I think I would have preferred this is John K played even more lead instead of Trey. But this sounds great. And let me put in another plug for JRAD. They are a fantastic band keeping the music alive without any attempt to clone GD's sound. And thank goodness for D&C! Bob Weir never slows down!
Like Jimmy Walker, this is day-no-mite!!
Sounds just like Jerry
why did they ever replace john k
They?
I know what you mean but the answers in your question. Different ‘theys’ entirely - totally different bands with the exception of Bobby
Who’s playing the percussion offstage?
There isn’t any. Joe Russo is just a machine
Suonata a regola d'arte..
Further was great. And this rendition of Scarlet>Fire was wonderful. But it’s hard for me to hear anyone but Jerry sing Fire, b/c to me the lyrics are a message from Robert Hunter to Jerry as Jerry was just beginning his descent into addiction. The messages would continue, e.g. Althea. Some songs should only be sung by Jerry.
sorry who's the singer? I wish the band was identified in the description
all the dummies who say that Bobby has been dragging tempo with Dead & Co need to watch this. It's always been Bill. He is so bad now and this is why he is not in Dead & Co anymore. Phil's playing painful these days as well. So many notes.
Nice recording.
Fucking, WOW
Fake Jerry sounds great
Right?? The first thing I said was “I dunno who that other guy is, but wow he sounds like Jerry. “
Awesome!
waaaat??? this shit is sick
Yo Joe Russo like Phil living Legends
RUclips would put fucking ads in the middle of a jam...
this hair band is a little phishy but i like phish soooo its ok.... the surgeon of light and sound is dead and shall never be replaced or forgotten
Except it's not Trey...it's John Kadlecik...awesome aren't they...?
Too bad John didn't give Trey some space to play his guitar.
has nothing to do with john k, trey is choosing to sit back and enjoy
John gave him the floor he took a step back, very unlike Trey
But he was still up
Jerrys Notdead he knows John would fuck him upppp
Rob Helms Dickey Betts or Duane would been better.
Dead and company should drop john Mayer and bring John kadelik on
Geoffrey Marcus oh god no. He is too much of a jerry clone, I find that to be soooo boring.
Kevin Borchers you’re right in that it may seem a little boring but I really don’t care for Bobby’s tone when he’s singing a Jerry song. I love bob let it grow is one of my favorite dead tunes. I think that with a “jerry clone” he would be less inclined to sing scarlet begonias or ripple . Just my opinion
THE BEST comment I have seen posted re: JM
Ok. But could you explain why. Convince me that’s a good move.
I love this band! I miss johns gentle demeanor, amazing playing and the fact that he doesnt make every song sound like a top 40 when he sings. Props to you john k. Youre missed.
line-up?
Furthur and Trey
seems like no jay lane on drums or sunshine on background vocals but yeah pretty much trurther
Jay was only with Furthur until late 2010 IIRC
this video features bobby on a gibson es 335,
trey playing the familiar languedoc,
phil on modulus and john kadlecik playing alembic.
I know its not exactly what you wanted, but I thought it was cool.
He sounds like jerry?
I enjoyed this very much but there were points where it felt like there was one too many guitarists involved. Phish is one of my favorite bands and no disrespect intended but Bobby and John would have held that down just fine.
If Joe beats those drums any harder--- I call the cops, simple as that.
I'll take Furthur over Dead & Co any day.
Thank you JK...no blue notes, as it should be! Mayer plays every song like a frikken blues song. Jerry knew better and was a master of the scales...All of them.
William Clark wait, didn't Jerry throw in a lot of blue notes? Mixed with lots of chromatic and mixolydian stuff?
Certainly did.@@rolandramirez4557
Indeed
Jerry was melodic, jerry was bluesy, jerry was a finger picker,.etc. Mayer knows what he's doing and he spends just as much time playing mixylodian.
Let trey sing. K just ain't it...
Steven Tracy I think he wanted to leave.
..
Now see I prefer a dead & company scarlet>fire to furthur. D&C have just brought something more/new/special to the table in the continuing evolution of Dead music.
One of the best Scarlett fires ever, sorry but you know it's true.
@reality check well if being on tour from 65 - 95 I think this old man knows alittle a bit
So you prefer falling asleep?
Hmmm. Not a huge fan of tribute acta, which is kind of what this feels like.
You couldn't be more wrong! That's Phil and Bobby!😂
Joe Russo is decent….
Trey makes Kladitch or whatever his name is look like a paperboy!
Bullshit
trey sux
Yea, John got ripped off when the Dead put Trey in his spot for the Fare Thee Well shows. Trey is good with Phish and Trey band but sucks in other bands as a guest. Obviously it was a, "lets go out with a big name guitar player" kind of thing. Trey cant sing for shit either.
man I miss this band so much
So much better than Dead and Co.
One Joe Russo exceeds two of the present Rhythm Devils.
I am an old Mickey and Billy fan--but I also a drummer still, kinda--and I have to agree. They have lost it... but MAN, did the have IT! Still Russo is a one-man percussion drum-driving beast. He is just SO GOOD. I love him with Further; heck, I just love Further with him. For my money, this is as close as you get to the real thing!
Furthur was great!
If Phil plays you know its authentico. Not this Dead&Co mumbo jumbo
If Joe hits those drums any harder, I am calling the cops.
The drummer!! Really amazing
Gotta love John!
These 6 dudes are now in 5 different bands.
Serious jams:)
this shit is super cool
Joe Russo is a MONSTER! But I have to say Phil is just a little off, which never happens. Good stuff though.
Hot take
Transition could have been tighter but this is top tier post gd stuff
3 great guitarists playing at low volume while some guy practices bass scales turned up to 11.
Indygreg71 😭😭😭
Can you imagine how cool the backup vocalists must have felt-especially not having Donna Jean on the mic??!??!?!
Nice demo...
Badass
"Hey Bob. Nice pipes" - Trey Anastasio
Carter Wykoff just watched that episode tonight so I giggled
Trey always sounds, playing Dead, like paint by numbers. I find no soul in his sound, as I do with John K.
Really? I hear no soul in John K's playing. He is the very definition of paint by numbers.
My god Russo does nothing but overplays!! I know, “he’s a beast”. But he never lets the music breath. And please, don’t give me the “he’s playing both the Billy and Mickey parts”. Show me 1 show where the GD ever sounded like the way this sounds. You can’t. Why? Because Billy and Mickey would never overplay like this together or one their own
Yeah, I get what you mean. But you could say the same thing about Trey overplaying, or either of these guys adding their own thing to what Jerry did. I guess you could say they're pushing the music 'furthur' ;) I love the way Joe pushes the rest of the band, especially at the end. Russos fast, steady pulse and busy limbs are responsible for JRAD being the most successful Dead tribute band there is!
