- Should I throw this bromeliad away? Let's look at broms in various stages of natural decline, and see if there might still be enough energy and life left in them to produce pups... Although they might look to be one step away from the trash can they might just surprise us! Learning about the life cycle of our bromeliads is easy, so come on everybody, "Let's get growing and have some fun!"

I saw a video and they stated that if you remove the pups it activates the mother to produce more. She took the mother out of the pot and let it sit on top of the soil, even more pups produced. She kept checking for pups even though there was no more green. The root/tuber produced one more pup after all the leaves were gone. So I will let my roots sit until they dry up. She had gotten so many pups by waiting. TFS

The bigger the pup the better, and although it can be separated at that stage and planted, if left in place a while longer it can get every last bit of energy from the remaining biomass. separation at that stage wont hurt the pup though.

The number of pups is all dependant on the plant's genetics, not only in the number but also in the timing. Great question, really appriciate you watching! Sorry for the late reply!

I always want to give the offset every opportunity to get that last bit of energy from the parent biomass... the usual rule of thumb is for the pup to be abt 1/3 the size of the adult, but where that may not be possible in this case the bigger the pup is the better.

Q: I just viewed a segment from a Malaysian grower who has a RUclips channel too... he's very knowledgeable but it's not in English. His latest showed him cutting off 1/3 sized pups off his broms and literally cutting them up and throwing away. Is he suggesting that the parent brom will grow larger and longer with no pups to feed? The parent broms were large Neos and very healthy.
Interesting… in theory, if reproduction is the largest energy expenditure for the bromeliad, then removing that energy drain (the pups) should result in more energy for the parent plant. But for that to work, there would need to be a halt to any further offset initiation in order for the plant to utilize any subsequent carbohydrate for its own growth, and if it genetically can produce more pups then it will do so even after the removal and the benefit would be canceled.
Still, if the parent brom only has, say, two pups in its genetics then what… more growth for the parent plant? Great brain teaser first thing in the morning Mike, thanks!

How Long do they take to reflower?
If you mean how long until the pups mature and flower, that is dependent upon the individual plants genetics...some Neoregelia can mature in 8-12 months.
