You're right! So I"m a NYC based US citizen but I grew up in Australia where we only have like 3 kinds of shoes, and in Australia the boat shoe is universally worn by douchey jocks so I could just never get on board with them haha. But I acknowledge and respect that they don't have the same connotations in the US and that I should try to do a more objective look at them!
What I like about Southern Polish is that they are made by a small business and are repairable if needed. They are not the cheapest price but have more class than flip flops in the same price class.
i'm wearing them around Vietnam right now and it's crazy how much of a difference that arch support makes, I never thought a flip flop could feel so good. That line sounds like an advertising slogan but I swear it just came to me
Im usually a boot guy, but I will considers shoes for this late summer. Thanks man. Great info. Love the edit. Very clean. High quality. Dont understand why you arent bigger.
I'm in Florida and wear boots all summer, except with non-hiking shorts and swim suits. You're indoors in AC most of the time and you still need support on trails and marshy terrain from all the tropical storms. Wore sneakers and camp mocs on walk after tropical downpours this week and they were useless. Iron Rangers worked like magic.
The thursday sneakers are great value and great quality! I've worn mine for three summers and they are now ready for a resole but not worn through. I still think they are even more beautiful when new but they do look good when worn.
@@jmsmorley I've never worn chucks but Thursday's do get some arch support from the removable insole/footbed. It may be hard to compare but I would say it's more than halfway to athletic shoes like Aesics/Reebok, when comparing to archless shoes like redwing. If that helps. :)
Service boots with lug soles look ok with chino shorts and a T-shirt or safari shirt. Basically hearkening back to early 20th century hikers. That said, I’m becoming more of a loafer guy. I prefer white leather or canvas sneakers, but they’re not resoleable, so I’ve been trying penny loafers in their place.
Definitely sticking with boots throughout the summer. I'm not sure where the myth came from that people can't rock boots with shorts. Just go to the Alps in July! :-)
I don’t wear shorts unless I’m doing hard labor in the absolute peak of summer (work boots) or I’m doing sport (sport-specific footwear). So I just wear casual or dress boots with my trousers in the summer as well. Leather breathes really well.
that's a killer collection, dude! grant stone's sneakers are really cool, I wanted some but tbh I own so much grant stone I couldn't think of a great reason to wear them over my Crown sneakers
I bought the Shop Moc in Hawthorne about three weeks ago, they’ve been great, probably too nice for work, lots of compliments from my coworkers, who’ve also pointed out, they’ll get destroyed. I might get myself a pair in black leather. The wedge sole is great for someone on concrete all day, these are truly great if you do a lot of kneeling. Didn’t find a need to change my sizing. That said, these are shoes that are built like a Classic Moc, they have a great, super thick veg tanned insole, they do take some time to break in, forget about doing that in a day or two. Once the leather insole starts to conform to your foot, you’ve turned a corner. The rough out Hawthorne is stunning for sure.
Agreed re: loafers of this type from Oak Street Bootmakers, Rancourt etc. I'd also suggest these types of companies also make traditional casual derbies along the same lines. I think Rancourt or someone like that even still make the old fashioned white bucks, like Alden. I finally suggest looking at companies producing desert boots like Astorflex and also Jadd in the UK - these companies tend to make actual shoes along the same patterns, again casual in Horween leathers or suede with crepe or lug soles.
Just got a pair of the Oak Street slip mocs. They're a good mix of casual and dress. They look like boat shoes without laces. Great leather and scratches that boot itch you mentioned in the video.
I have an old pair of the old Postman style shoe from RW in a beautiful sage green suede. They look great, but they are brutal to break in, thus I've barely worn them. I'm thinking now (finally) that I throw in a thin foam insole I might be able to finally break them in enough to enjoy them in the warmer months.
Since I only wear boots year round, I wear Thursday Commanders with shorts in the summer. They’re a hiking type boot, so they don’t look ridiculous with shorts. I have two pairs, in tobacco and black. I wouldn’t be caught dead in flip flops. 😜
Huge respect for the variety of leather shoe styles but aside from sneakers I just dont think they are for me. The hype for white leather sneakers has clearly died down, but I am looking to something like a hender scheme in natural veg tan so it gets that warm brown patina.
Missed boat shoes/trail oxfords and other handsewns. I think these are much more "boot guy" than some of the options, and sleeker than the moxford (lol) while still sort of going for the same look.
Boat shoes are a good point but in Australia they're the shoe of choice for douchey jocks so I can't get on board with them haha, but I know they have a richer life in the United States and can indeed scratch the goodyear welt itch, thanks for mentioning them
Same pair of boots every winter, new pair of converse every summer. It's so boring and I need to change... Those leather sneakers look amazing with the patina. I'm just afraid of breath-ability and them being to warm. Is that an issue?
1:50 - Thursday sneakers are a steal for the price. Picked up the Coffee colorway and I love them. The only "negative" is the sole seems to be wearing fairly quickly. Only wearing them on the weekends, and I feel like they'll need a resole in a year or two.
@@jmsmorley Good for my feet (EEE width and high arch). The better part is, the insole is removable so you can replace it with any orthotics you wish; but the stock insoles are unexpectedly comfy (IMO)
Some guys will do anything to avoid Birkenstocks lol. Just embrace them, they’re wonderful and embody everything you respect about boots. Also absolutely love the Luca Drift, it just looks so comfy and clean. On flip flops: for me waterproof is a requirement, basically the whole point, so I really like Olukais.
I'm glad you made this video. I'm a boot guy but I live in Arizona, so half the year I'm wearing shorts. I wear my Red Wing moc toes with shorts all the time. My Nicks moc toes look pretty good too. Another brand to consider is Jim Green, especially their African Ranger and vellies. Jim Green is a warmer climate sort-of brand. Also consider Clarks Desert Boots and Palladium. Related to that, some service boots don't look bad either. I think of old photos from WWII of guys in North Africa or the Pacific wearing boots with shorts.
@@Stridewise I know summer unofficially ends in a month but that’s still a good smith of time. BTW I prefer boat shoes or driving shoes for summer. They cover all my casual and otherwise formal needs
Instead of Flip Flops I definitely concur that Birkenstock is it. Personally the Milano I love because it has a back strap so will not fly off the foot or make a flop sound with every step. The Huarache and Sabah and Espadrilles on concrete I say never do it because you have no cushioning underneath and the foot will feel every shock. They are made for soft surfaces like dirt or sand and maybe wood. I have experience trying to do it multiple times. Not thick enough for hard surfaces unless you will just be standing in place and not doing any walking longer than 10 minutes.
Best summer shoe is Aurora Shoe Co Middle English. Small shop handmade with quality “boot” materials. Stitchdown CXL on a veg leather insole with Vibram 2021 soles. Comfortable as a sneaker.
I have those thursday shooz and I have to say the narrow toe box has really worn on me over time. I just put them on yesterday and they somehow feel even narrower than last time I wore them. I doubt I'll wear them again. They were fine for a year and are still in almost new shape, but off to ebay they go... probably≥
I had a pair of Thursday sneakers a couple summers ago. I liked the waxed flesh and I was hoping to get some interesting patina on them, but I live in Manhattan and do a lot of walking. I wore through the outsole before the shoes developed noticeable changes in the leather. This summer I have a ranger camp moc from Rancourt and I love them. Highly recommended.
Is that a Tudor Chrono on your wrist? I have that same pair of mohinders, I take them when I go on a cruise. When I hit the pool , I use them often. You are certainly different from the heard, when you rock them. They wear great.
I hate most of those. Leather sneakers are good. Clean canvas sneakers are good. Boat shoes are good. Canvas oxfords/derbies are good. And of course leather or suede oxfords or derbies. It’s nice you showed off all of these, but you just don’t look good with them. I’m sorry.
i mean it's explicitly a video about shoes for guys who like boots, so canvas sneakers and oxfords wouldn't have worked but i'm glad you found one or more of the 8 options good, that's the point of giving so many options
You wear your boots all year round. Do as you please. But for those of us myself included who run hot. I ain't wearing heavy ass boots with boot socks in the middle of summer.
@@Stridewise that wasn’t my issue. They had a ridiculously hard spot on the right shoe only up around the pinkie toe. I tried removing the insole and putting another one in to no avail. Honestly turned me off them, even though they look fantastic in cacao.

boat shoes and camp mocs easily fall into this category too considering the leather choice and heritage makers in New England
I'm really surprised he didn't mention deck shoes (boat shoes), those to me are the most obvious choice for summer.

I absolutely love wearing boat shoes in the summer. Depending on the color of them, can easily be worn with chino shorts or chino pants.

Theres also Jungle Boots, which have canvas material for the quarters/uppershaft and it makes the boots way more breathable like converse chucks!
