I am running my first half marathon at the age of 73ys next month, your you tubes are proving very helpful, really nervous I won’t finish, but training is going well.
Was running downhill, felt like a gazelle. There was a photographer. Looked like a toad. Will stay with that feeling... Thank you, they all resonated 🙂
Seriously give it a try! I have been running with music years and have earlier had it like you. But recently I almost never run with music. The beautiful silence and maybe even sound of nature/birds/etc. depending on where you run, is really magic. Our life is filled with sound, notifications, interruptions etc. so running in peace is one of the very few places I really have time for myself.
“The music sets my pace.” That is the issue when running with music. When I listened to music, sometimes that “forced” pace would cause me to push too hard on hills (up and down), or not run hard enough on some days. Also, inevitably the music device will fail at the worst time (I speak from experience). Without the music, it is easier to focus on individual segments on the chosen course and how best to approach them.
List for convenience: 1. Warm up adequately 2. Start races modestly 3. Prioritize sleep 4. Run without music 5. Focus on weaknesses 6. Know when (not) to run 7. Strength and Conditioning 8. Fuel properly 9. Acknowledge others out running (but don't expect a reply) 10. Accept awful race photos ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- I personally need to work on 1 (I warm up but need to do drills before my runs, and not just dynamic stretches) 3 (trying reset myself this weekend and go intk the week getting at least 7 hrs a night) 4 (he makes a great point about tuning into your body and getting to know what a pace feels. Like for you. I've been getting better at being able to tell...But not as good as I'd like.) I've also only ever ran one race, so... I'll keep those in mind when the opportunity presents itself in the future! 😅
I listened to you and ditched my headphones today on my Manchester half and achieved sub 2hrs... best feeling ever. Went from 2.08 last year to 1.59.11... didn't get much training done. Just paced tuned into my body as you said. Amazing. It was so beneficial
The greeting stuff is so on point. I used to take it to heart when my greetings weren't reciprocated by another runner . It was only when I mixed up my running training with tempo, threshold and internal runs etc that I realised that it was hard to focus on getting through the workout and with what was going on around me. I accepted the truth that we all run in our own lanes but that they sometimes coincide.
Yes it’s the one I think I’ve struggled with the most actually. I expect everyone to want to say hello back to me!! Until I have a bad day or miss a greeting and then realise it’s not usually intentional 🤦🏻♂️😂
I ran a competitive 10k and 5 miler recently without my headphones. I used to think zoning out helped me mask the pain. I was wrong and smashed my pb on both. Totally true about the headphones. I think I'll now only use them for some slow runs. Good video!
I’m a new runner and I’m trying to implement as many things to keep my runs enjoyable and injury free, so thank you for your tips. I agree with the music/podcast thing, although I do run with the headphones, it’s just silence and my own breath. When I just started running, I discovered that music can trick me into having a higher tempo than what I’d like, so I just listen to my own breath and argue with my own demons for entertainment.
Thankyou so much. I’ve learned so much from you Ben as a coach and great teacher. BUT as a woman approaching 40 getting back into running, it’s Mary who has been an absolute inspiration. Mary, your attitude to training and racing, your joy and just showing me what’s possible if I stick at it consistently. Thankyou both!
Very new to running. And definitely not ready for any big races yet. But found your channel and you and Mary are a definitely an inspiration of real runners wins and an honest set of expectations. Thanks for all your content. Keeps me wanting to get out and run
haha im totally guilty of the first point, went out on my first marathon at a pace that was 20-25 seconds faster than my planned pace and it felt good until around 30km in then completely died. I eventually slowed so much that i had to do a bit of running mixed with walking for the last 10+ km of the race. But I guess I learned my lesson the hard way and will never make the same mistake again in the future.
Looks like I made exactly the same marathon as you in Paris, was running a pace ro reach 3h20 for the first 30kmrhen died in the last 10 km and finish in 3h38min, there was a lot of walking in the end 😅
Your videos are so encouraging! I am a new runner and am training for my first Half-Marathon. It’s scary but I’ve already improved so much since I started I have to keep going to see if I can do it.🏃🏻♀️❤️
Race Day is tomorrow!🙌🏾 My first 5K! Thanks so much for the info and encouragement. I’ve trained 8 weeks with headphones. Lol dont think I should try without on the Big Day I may ruin my pace, but I typically run half with and half without.
Last year when I really started training properly, I listened to music on all my runs (except for parkruns, social runs and races). When winter hit I felt like I had less time to make running playlists and all of that and ended up 50/50 with and without music. I like it both ways, and will probably try to keep at that ratio. Maybe not the best reason to absorb the advice, but always try to learn. Oh, and I love that you upload Sundays. After I come back home from a Sunday long run I have got used to watching your videos! 🧡
I’m the same. Mostly non music but I do sometimes or even podcasts. But I had to stop listening to Gary Vee as he got me so pumped my heart rate would spike 😂
Former Marine here. Been runnin all my life WITH NO MUSIC. And its been my secret weapon. U gotta listen to ur body. Ignore nothing. Like a mind muscle connection. U gotta be present. I almost make a beat with my feet and my breath. It makes a world of difference.
I love tip #9, it feels good to greet others. Also, I can't imagine running with headphones!! I don't know how people do it. If I could add one to the list it would be paying some attention to the elites. I find it endlessly motivating to know what Eilish McColgan or Jacob Kiplimo are up to for instance. Or reliving some classic Bekele races. Keeps me going on the hard days. Solid video my friend!
Thanks so much for that runner greeting tip, I was always so confused about people not motioning back to me when I wave or give them✌️ I guess now I know why
I ran my first marathon in Paris the other weekend in 3:40:12! I'm so happy about the 7 month journey of training that I've been on, and I don't plan on stopping! Let's run for life!! Thank you for all the tips for beginner runners, been su subscribed for quite some time now. Back in training soon and will prioritize strength training+ swimming and cycling sessions for a potential triathlon 😊 💪
Thank you! It was six days before my 21st bday, so I'd say it was the best gift haha. Training payed off, and I definitely learnt to tone down the pace in the first 20km.
@@Ign.C haha 😂 I am on Marathon 23 I think in Copenhagen (losing count a little now) and still not sure I have mastered the distance and pacing one to perfection yet (or if I ever will). That's the beauty of the Marathon challenge though ❤️ and putting in the Marathon training properly also pays off when it comes to running all of the shorter distances. Keep going 👍 at such a young age and with that time in your first then with the right training and commitment a Sub 3 hour Marathon is definitely yours one day if you want it enough.
Such great straight talk advice, pal. I'm a strong runner and have been running seriously for over a year and a half now. (I've run off and on since I was very young. .. but nothing like I do now..). You are highlighting most of the little things that I have noticed throughout my journey.. I greatly appreciate your channel and your experience.. Cheers
Your 9th tip is so great. You have to make sure you have your joy in life, you can spread it by fretting people but if you only greet people because you want it reciprocated your joy will be short lived. When I greet someone or cheer I think I did something good.
I struggle to do strength and conditioning. I get to the gym and lift weights because i enjoy it, but all the rubber band, pilates type of stuff i still can't bring myself to do.
I’ve said hello and given a thumbs up to every runner I’ve seen but only 60% reply! Said hello today to a runner who ignored me. I saw the same runner 90 mins later many miles away. This time he said hello and had a huge knowing smile. 😊
I have to absolutely agree with the headphones advice. I used to run with headphones and music in my ears. One day my headphones broke, so I was running without them for a few weeks. I found that I was enjoying the run more, hearing and taking in the surroundings. But most amazingly, my pace just seemed to magically jump up for some reason. Those were the days (about 6-7 years ago) before I had a gps watch, and was only tracking my runs with my phone, and only saw my stats after the run was done.
Last race I was at (the Bangkok park run half marathon) I totally left my plan behind and ended up getting a PR and finally broke under 1:30. But I think you’re right, I definitely took a gamble and could have blown up my race.
I think what I enjoy most from some of your videos are the clips where you're working hard doing some strength training and the dogs are just lounging around looking at you like you've lost your mind. :)
I just bought a package of my race photos from last year's BMO Marathon (I ran the 8k event). In all but one of them I look like I was about to die. I know I went a little too hard out the gate and flagged at the end but I don't remember feeling like I'd just been told someone close to me had died as I crossed the finish line as the photo suggests, lol. The one good picture was worth it though. I look confident and strong. It's my current profile picture. 8k in 36:43
I haven't ran for over a year, because i started a job lifting heavy loads and it was breaking me, ive finally got back into it the last few weeks, just so happens i couldn't find my headphones, i found alot out about myself that day although i lost all the stamina, i was amazed by the feeling of how strong my legs had become due to workout i didn't realize i was doing at work and how much more powerful i felt, 2 blessings in disguise i found i had in that 1st session back
After 27 months of running have never felt the need for music(do burst into song occasionally though!) Its only recently with marathon training and long runs going beyond 3 hours that i have got close to boredom and could understand why it might be needed by some.
Agree with a lot but the music part. Sometime I do, sometimes I don’t, depending on the day. I’ve completed internationally and trained to a high level, also my GF is exactly the same who is an Olympic gold medalist rower. It’s personal preference.
I've downloaded the army fitness app in the last week and I'm following their bodyweight exercise programme. Upper body strength particularly is a weak spot for me and one I want to address to keep functionally active into my age. 😊
This really spoke to me, especially attacking things you avoid. For some reason I hate core work outs but know its so helpful in terms of holding form and injury prevention! 😅
The photo part is so true. Every race where someone took a pic of me running to post on the runs website is always awful, would be under best conditions but still very funny.😂😂😂😂 you guys are awesome. Another great video.
When I run I always listen to Smooth Radio Scotland, no headphones or earbuds, just a smartphone in my pocket. Music of the 70s and the 80s is the greatest IMHO 💕. Like from Belarus.👍
That greeting other runners got me laughing 😂😂😂 because I'm that one person that greets everyone and on average, at least three out of ten will totally ignore me and your expression is exactly mine. 🤣
Thanks for the video. Some stuff you mentioned I have just started to exercise and these are absolutely mind blowing (strength, conditioning, drills), why haven’t I done these before? One thing for race day for me is that I start too slow and then when I realise it I cannot get the lost time back, for me it is the worst thing when I knew I couldn’t perform a 100%.
I took a nap before my evening run, felt fresh and ready once I was outside. Normally I don't, had a bad day weight lifting on the bench. Hopefully my shoulder is good.
May have to deep dive into your archives to find some strength and Conditioning advice. It's definitely the top thing I avoid! Thanks for another great video and good luck on your 10k a day!
The one that hit me the most was the race day photos 🙈 it’s hit me hard where I question am I even a runner?? The angles, the faces, the way my legs look 😔 buuuut you made me feel better about it, remember the way you felt in that run!
Lots of great tips, as always Ben! Would you be able to do a video on using Garmin's Daily Suggested Workouts for maybe a month? I'd love to see what it recommends for you over that time, and how it impacts your running. Thanks!
Talking about running without music, for me, my run is the only moment of the day where I'm not influenced by something like social media or music. I try to really focus on my body, my breathing and my footsteps. I also rethink my day, think about what I'm going to do tomorrow and take a little moment to thank myself for the things I'm doing and to be proud of myself. I absolutely think more people should do this, it feels a bit like a meditation. At least give it a try! :D
I very rarely run with headphones as I’ve always preferred to just run. I do occasionally use headphones for split updates but I don’t actually listen to music just the splits. My wife thinks it is weird so I’m happy to see you include it in your list!
One of the trails I use for training has the "feature" of not having any signal for my phone. So I already have somewhere I run without headphones. And when I do use headphones, I only have one in so I can have one ear "open" for listening to my surroundings.
Elite athletes will hit the gym more often than you think, it's the gym work that makes the difference between good, better, advanced and then those elites. SO SO much more to being a runner than running and as a coach you already know that, sadly so many dont and so many youtube qualified coaches don't, NOT you as you are one of the rare ones that are in the trade of sport and fitness, which is why I like your channel.
Im early retired, so i can afford running at very late hours in middle of night and in middle of nowhere, its really great for your focus after you got used on route 😂 i rarely encounter even a car.
I tune out without earpods and music. I think this is a very introvert/extrovert thing. I find that I focus easily with less distraction (which hearing the chaos of the external world while running is for me). Hence having music at a set/consistent bpm is like a background relaxation which allows me to access flow state and be hyper focused on my entire body, SPM, foot placements, rhythms, etc while running. Everyone is different but do what works for you.
I don't understand why I'll gladly run 30k in wind and driving rain (yesterday) but it's a hard pass for me on doing 10 minutes of stretching pre and post run. As a 48 year old I think I absolutely need to get past this problem. Also I recently stopped listening to music on my runs. I'm trying to focus on my breathing more. Just trying to get to the next level.
Guy's been meaning to say a HUGE thank you for the channel. RUclips threw it my way last year and I've been feasting on the content. It's been great to watch your journey, better than anything on the big screen. In the last 12mths my running has evolved and I have to give you credit for this. I'm more consistent and simply loving the whole thing and I'm not getting injured. Your decision to move to Thailand was so inspiring, you really are role models thank you for sharing it. Couple of questions, do you have a massage 'gun' and how regularly do you use it? And do you have any recommendations on how long is too long to use a massage 'gun'? Stay healthy, stay well and thanks again. p.s. Mary you've inspired me to go after a sub 40min 10k, it totally terrifies me but your recent effort blew my mind and now I've entered a race and I'm putting it out there! Great stuff guys
About the music thing, I have a playlist that has songs exclusively in the 170-180 bpm range so I can work on cadence on long runs/easy runs, I also run with open ear headphones (Aftershockz Titaniums) which helps take down that barrier from hearing myself. I also never race or do hard workouts with music so for me, it's a tool to make my easy miles productive too
I'm on my way gradually training for a half , having had 20yrs away from running. I never let myself train at different paces before (which sounds dumb I know) and thanks to you both and your inspirational and massively helpful content I'm upto 16km now. Am loving the freedom of running despite making all the common errors so far along the way 😂. Thanks so much for the mental push I needed 🙏
Most of these are great, but there's zero chance I'm ever running without headphones. I love running, and part of that id how much I enjoy listening to music/podcasts while I'm doing it.
The other day my earbuds had died, and I didn't want to wait for them to charge so I went on a run without them. It was the first time in years that I had run without music, and I definitely felt more in tuned and focused on my pace and technique. It was nice to do, and def plan on doing it more often.
loved this, made me laugh out loud a couple of times! Do you have a video on how to actually fuel for each run? Any recommendations on what to fuel with, like gels etc for each distance? and how often to fuel?
These are all great reminders!! The race photos hit hard, I usually look DONE 😅 I have started to work on speed, strength and flexibility. I run with music 99% of the time, AirPods Pro on transparency mode with a mix of 75% classical, mainly Bach ❤ Zone 2 I do 👍, started to work in more speed work as my race approaches. I fuel runs over 2 hours generally, sometimes 1.5 if I feel my glycogen stores aren’t topped up. I always pick up something from your vids, thanks ❤
I enjoy listening to music on my runs, but this morning, running around Rama iX park, I realised I'd forgotten to put music on. I actually liked taking in my surroundings more and stayed music free for the rest of the run.
I like listening to music while on a treadmill, but aside from the need to be aware of my surroundings, I really like the noise my steps make on the pavement.
Hydration. I have seen videos that mention hydration, but nothing that focuses on how, how much, and when. Similar to fueling, most say anything over an hour. But what if you live in Miami? or Thailand?
Great video! Any chance you could talk about what kind of effort (heart rate wise) different race distances are reasonable? I've been doing low HR easy base runs with speed work but if I want to go for a new PB, what type of efforts should I be planning for?
Yeah. Ive been thinking about removing my headphones every now and again. Though... I worry a bit. There are times when im feeling like ending a tough run early. Then a song i love comes on, and i think to myself, how was ever considering quitting? And i find the strength to continue. But, now that someone else other than Goggins has mentioned it, im going to see how it goes.
I started running with music. That lasted around a month. Now I can listen to my breathing to see if I'm going to hard. The birds, the wind. Just life. Will never run with headphones again.
My girlfriend also "can't" run without earphones because she says it's too boring. Tried to explain to her that it's good to listen to your body and breathing.. anyway she just want to ignore that
I am running my first half marathon at the age of 73ys next month, your you tubes are proving very helpful, really nervous I won’t finish, but training is going well.
Hi Jane!! How did it go? Very proud of you running it no matter how you did. Its awesome! 🎉
Never trust a fart 😂😂😂😂…great advice
What is that, like and subscribe but never follow through.
And along with that, never wear white shorts….haha 😂
Can confirm after my long run this morning - solid advice 😂
One of my best 😂
And this never happens at the beginning or the end of the run but smack dab in the middle of the run 😢
Was running downhill, felt like a gazelle. There was a photographer. Looked like a toad. Will stay with that feeling... Thank you, they all resonated 🙂
Ha ha we’ve all been there. Sadly quite regularly 😂
I just can’t imagine myself running without music, the music sets my pace, gets me hyped and honestly gets me through most of my runs 😮

Our life is filled with sound, notifications, interruptions etc. so running in peace is one of the very few places I really have time for myself.
I find it way harder to focus on mechanics and keep a steady/constant effort when listening to music.
I like listening to podcasts. Strengthen the mind and the body. Two birds with one stone
“The music sets my pace.” That is the issue when running with music. When I listened to music, sometimes that “forced” pace would cause me to push too hard on hills (up and down), or not run hard enough on some days.

Definitely personal preference 👍🏻 but my point is try every way. Music and none. Learn about the body etc 😊
@@ThisMessyHappy agreed! really like your videos 👍👍👍
I've downloaded the army fitness app in the last week and I'm following their bodyweight exercise programme. Upper body strength particularly is a weak spot for me and one I want to address to keep functionally active into my age. 😊
Great work and absolutely the way forward 🤟🏼
Great tips. I wish I had this before I ran my marathon
Great work, dude. It all comes with time. You’ll get race pacing right. You’ll see 😊
Love your videos as always. I just finished week 5 of your marathon training plan, feeling good and getting my kilometers in!
There is a strength and conditioning playlist I think. From way back when 😂
ngl i will never give up my podcast runs. it's what i live for
Love your tip on greeting other crazies, I mean runners.
Thanks!
Funny you suggest this, Mike! Got something along these lines brewing 😊
"prioritise sleep," no worries, I'll let my children know, I'm sure they'll respect my wishes.
I’m working on a new product called ‘baby chloroform’ to help 😂
Elite athletes will hit the gym more often than you think, it's the gym work that makes the difference between good, better, advanced and then those elites. SO SO much more to being a runner than running and as a coach you already know that, sadly so many dont and so many youtube qualified coaches don't, NOT you as you are one of the rare ones that are in the trade of sport and fitness, which is why I like your channel.
You two are hugely inspirational especially being teachers.🎉
😅 Thanks! My problem, I have great race photos, but I'm running a 5-hour marathon!😂 you two have some awesome videos! Sawadee! Kapkunkap!
I've genuinely learnt so much from your videos over the past year or so! Thank you both, that's all ❤
Im early retired, so i can afford running at very late hours in middle of night and in middle of nowhere, its really great for your focus after you got used on route 😂 i rarely encounter even a car.
The greeting is so great :)
On fueling always carry an emergy gel, saved me a couple of times
Number 9 is actually very helpful. That always bothered me, will remember this next time I'm blanked. 👌
Just found an old vid you did on Tempo sessions. That’s definitely a weakness for me so going to watch that. #9 definitely good advice!
You guys have become my favorite!!!!
I stretch first, do a slow 1km warm up and then my main long run, and a warm down slow paced run with a walk home 😅
I just bought those exact same running shoes! Same color and everything! Lol
loved this, made me laugh out loud a couple of times! Do you have a video on how to actually fuel for each run? Any recommendations on what to fuel with, like gels etc for each distance? and how often to fuel?
Great stuff Ben! Love your content and I love watching you and Mary's running journey!
These are all great reminders!!
The race photos hit hard, I usually look DONE 😅
I have started to work on speed, strength and flexibility.
I run with music 99% of the time, AirPods Pro on transparency mode with a mix of 75% classical, mainly Bach ❤
Zone 2 I do 👍, started to work in more speed work as my race approaches.
Awesome! Funny you were at Rama 9 and I was running with Simon Chandler 😂
@@ThisMessyHappy I keep meaning to get in touch with Simon, thanks for the reminder!
Love your intro!
I like listening to music while on a treadmill, but aside from the need to be aware of my surroundings, I really like the noise my steps make on the pavement.
I totally relate to your advice.
Hey Ben, do u have a video on how to move to Thailand? 😅
I love your videos, guys!!
Good video - did I see a bit of Dublin in this video?
I subscribed! And glad to see you put your girlfriend in, too. She seems nice 👍🙋🙏
Awesome clips. Very cool
Don’t tell my wife I have a girlfriend!! 😂
Great video!! Thank you
Glad found your Channel! Nice....
Ok there are a few things I need to be doing, but I’m already subscribed 😊… more importantly though, why has one of your dogs got the lampshade on? 😳
I started running with music. That lasted around a month. Now I can listen to my breathing to see if I'm going to hard. The birds, the wind. Just life. Will never run with headphones again.
Number 9 lol my pet peeve especially as I live in London
Great info
I like ur vids!! Great presentation and ur really likeable. Subbed
U sold me on your channel subscription with the race photo part 😂
Did you rand CM1 last summer, to bad i missed that at that time
My girlfriend also "can't" run without earphones because she says it's too boring.
Tried to explain to her that it's good to listen to your body and breathing.. anyway she just want to ignore that
Great video as always, but the one thing that an insomniac hates to hear, especially as advice, is "get more sleep". We know 😢
So true!
Yeah sorry about that. Nothing I can say to make that one better 😢
