Great video! This is a style I can see myself winning with. Focused, targeted, aggressive. Every limpers nightmare is a TAG with a short-stack. I’ve been playing PokerStars free app to practice different playing styles using Avatar changes. Noticing a range of changes in my villain’s play has made me more aware of how style and table image affects play. Let’s me better craft my own. Thanks, good stuff.
this advice sounds banal, but it is great. But i think most players don`t have the self insight to know about their own emotional reactions. On paper poker is just a numbers game. That is the same numbers comeing out over and over again totaly random. But reality is that poker is just humans betting on the numbers and their emotions and narcissism playing out. Setting a pre sett limit, is like having a stopploss in the stockmarket it is a insurance against Tilt. But 99,99% don`t use a pre sett stopploss or have a plan at all, they don`t even know they can be emotional. They think it`s all about luck and randomness. When reality is that it is about how they handle their emotional reaction of the randomness luck/bad luck etc
First off, I'm a consistent winning 6max cash player. I consider myself within the top 5 percent of the player pool. I disagree about NOT buying in for 100 bbs. You don't want to be perceived as a fish by regulars because they will relentlessly 3bet you, make moves against you, double and triple barrel you... all things that make your life difficult with medium strength hands like 99, AJ, AQ, KQ, etc. I prefer being perceived as good because more of your bluffs get through, you get 3bet pre less, and your steals are more successful. Sure, with the premiums like jacks plus this would be beneficial, but those occasions are less often. The only case this works is a strategy I use: I like to start 6max tables by sitting down with a minimum buy in. This attracts fish... you may attract 2 - 4 fishy shortstackers and then a reg or two will arrive and sit down with 100 bbs. At this point, the fish are at the table, so I top up 100 bbs. Then I instantly start a new table same technique. Once this table fills, I repeat until I have about 6 new fishy tables. Of course, I'm very confident and capable with my hu game, so I wouldn't recommend trying this unless you're good hu. Starting new tables increases your chances of catching some fish. Getting into a 5 handed table often times is full of all regs.
Jonathon Ross Thanks for the comment. I like the idea of creating new tables, it's worked really well for me at times in the past. I do prefer having a fishy image against regs, cause I can just readjust to them fairly easily. I like getting no respect, maximizes my value hands and sets up so many profitable spots overall. I wrote about it at length in my book and blog, in benefits of playing a short stack.
1st Why would we NOT want people to perceive us as a fish again? That sounds pretty backwards. 2nd he specifically said this is for people who are not comfortable playing deeper stacks. All that said, I do take pretty serious issue w many of the points on this video like the importance of keeping initiative, which isn't even a "real" thing. Incentive to bet comes from having the more polar and less capped range and it is really only a function of player A's range vs player Bs range regardless of how the action went preflop.
Short term is ruled by variance.. wild swings can happen over 100k sample sizes.. but once you have a sample of about 500k hands, you would have a decent idea of your win rate. However, since we are (hopefully) constantly learning and evolving as players, skill level should be increasing as we go. Long story short, focus less on results and more on learning. Even so, periodically reflecting on how you are doing is helpful if done constructively. If you happen to be losing over a 100k sample, it can't hurt to seek out some coaching to try and identify leaks in your game.
AutomaticPoker - 100k hands is roughly 20 months playing full time (30-40 hours week) . Basically 2 years. I had to ask because I hear ppl use those words loosely without specifying. I been playing for almost 5 years now. I did my learning/reflection on a daily, weekly , then monthly. It was the bad result that drove me to learn more. Now I experience swing once every 3-6 months. In short I never understand nor agree with telling new players to not be result oriented. It’s not a game where you stumble up on a solid set of strategy so you believe it entirely, put it to use and trust that it will work. (Unless one lucky to have a good coach. I like to learn these things on my own more) In fact, the only way to know if you are improving is by the result on a daily and weekly basis. By god if I have to wait 2 years to know the result of my learning I go back to school and earn a master. I think the message is to understand how variance works. Which affect short term results (weekly or occasional monthly down swing). But if one is not winning daily and weekly, his game is bad. Even as a winning regular, I look at the result to find ways to improve my game.
I'm sure it's possible but can't imagine anyone going to the trouble just to try and impress someone. Of course, I did do the "spare change challenge" and recorded nearly every hand on RUclips, so it'd be hard for me to fake that.
assuming a player buys in for say 80 big blinds doesn`t scream anything; if you are a good player offline, then your playing short stack, in fact any amount you buy in with can be considered as a short stack. I`v seem 40 min buy ins turn into thousands within hours, don`t follow leaders be a leader.
Listened to this and got my first poker tournament win!
Gratz!

Glad to be of help. Let me know how it goes!
You don't sound arrogant Jim, great simple video, thanks so much.
Thanks 😁
Being this video is four or five years old I think we can give it some grace and say it's not so bad based on the time it was published
20:43 You are completely WRONG! I am super excited, especially since I found your short-stacking strategy 🤘
If you are afraid of betting off your stack then play limit poker not no limit.

Every time I call, I get this feeling

One problem with buying in for the minimum or close to it is it screams to everyone at the table NEWBIE. Just something to keep in mind.
Yup, that's just one of the awesome things about buying in short.
very good
What is considered short term or long term? What if I am result oriented to assess my skill?

I like your content but just an fyi the graph isnt evidence of anything, i could create a graph too.

I wanted to hear the story of how you started playing for 30 BB.
I wrote about it on my website, automaticpoker.com
Bet the turn is key
Seems like the more I learn, the less I know...lol.
I have that feeling every day.
