No choice, pal, eventually everybody will be forced to drive EV's :( that's what Europe wants and we won't escape it ... Oh, I forgot to mention that the fuel price will substantially increase in the following years because of the carbon taxes. That will push even more people into adopting EV's. Let's not forget the fact that they will forbid an increasing number of cars to be on the roads or to enter the cities, plus all the gas stations which will shutdown or which will be converted to EV's charging stations (it already started here in Belgium).
Sad truth. We don't want this future but they decided for us.

If anybody is interested, you can calculate the size of the battery needed to replace gasoline by multiplying gallons of gasoline by 12.38333 kwh. eg, to replace 21.4 gog, 21.4 * 12.38333 = 265 kwh. Diesel fuel contains a lot more energy (13.75898 kwh) so you would need a much bigger battery, eg. 21.4 * 13.75898 = 295 kwh. In reality the batteries would actually need to be maybe 20% bigger because unlike a gas tank batteries cannot be completely emptied.

EVs have their place in the transportation mix, but they are not well suited (with their present performance characteristics) for long haul trips. Let the market decide, let each individual decide what they want based on their driving needs. Lets not be like mainland China where they have an EV mandate and no other options, and are trying to push that out to the rest of the world. Let USA and European consumers choose what they want. As for Volkswagen, their executives need a pay cut (let them make it back in stock options through improved stock pricing if German law would allow that) and they need to eliminate or severely reduce the dividend payout to shareholders for the forseeable future.

Is it the EV mandate? everybody I know wants an electric car, every single new car around where I live is an EV, Audi, VW, Kia and loads of Teslas. My opinion, the rise in EV take up is market driven, the drop in sales of ICE cars is because people are waiting for EV price drops, range increasing and saving. 400-500-600 mile real range EVs are appearing now, in a couple of years they will be common, if VW didn't go through this transition now as hard as it is, in a few years Chinese brands would decimate the company, this way VW survives which is a good thing.
ICE cars are only affordable because of volume, if ICE sales drop 30%-50% because of EV take-up, ICE cars will increase in price per unit massively, the anti EV, pro pollution and child asthma, lobby might just be dragged screaming and shouting into the modern healthy world, just like steam engine fanatics were in the past. Middle aged men, ICE enthusiasts will be able to gather at conventions like steam train enthusiasts do today to talk about how wonderful the past was.

question: who will buy a new car in the current economic situation (globally)? most people are now looking for reliable cars at low prices, so if the vehicle is not broken then there is no need to buy a new one, and if the vehicle can still be repaired, just repair it, there is no need to increase debt by applying for a loan from the bank, or paying a new rent/mortgage.
now, with fewer people buying new cars, how can a company stay afloat? don't just blame ev (although i have to admit that ev from china play a big role in the current situation)
you played wait and see, so now, there's nothing more you can do, in the 80s japan created a sensation in the automotive industry by making reliable and cheap cars, and now, china has made such a big wave, and you can't beat it. blame yourself, why would you put a clown in a strategic and decision-making position in your company? why didn't you join tesla in the first place?
now you play the victim, saying this and that, this profit and that profit, let's think about it, when a car company goes bankrupt, how many will be affected? then, let's look at the purchasing power of society as a whole, with so much unemployment, will it rise or fall, if it falls it means the country's GDP as a whole will fall. then?
the chain reaction of wrong decisions by decision-makers in a too-big-to-fail company is tremendous.

EV’s will be cheaper and faster to build. Cars are becoming expensive for most people as well as repairs and maintenance. Future is more uber, ridesharing and robotaxis. USA was a supersizing nation now downsizing. We need more battery plants worldwide. Chinese CATL is the largest battery factory in the world. China 10 years ahead of even Tesla. Tesla is more a software/hardware battery company that happens to make cars. Batteries for the grid and home are going well. As well as its AI DOJO and Colossus’s computer.
