No choice, pal, eventually everybody will be forced to drive EV's :( that's what Europe wants and we won't escape it ... Oh, I forgot to mention that the fuel price will substantially increase in the following years because of the carbon taxes. That will push even more people into adopting EV's. Let's not forget the fact that they will forbid an increasing number of cars to be on the roads or to enter the cities, plus all the gas stations which will shutdown or which will be converted to EV's charging stations (it already started here in Belgium). Sad truth. We don't want this future but they decided for us.

If fuel tax increases, it will not just hit the consumer. it's going to hit businesses' big style. Your are going to see a lot of businesses go under as well. Politicians have made a real mess of the whole thing instead of letting market forces dictate what is best for them.

I’m one year into owning my vw golf gti club sport. It’s fantastic. Totally reliable. I can go out to play in it from time to time and it leaves a grin on my face or I can pootle around in eco mode and overall I’m happy with consumption. All the critics of the infotainment system need to chill. I would like a button or dial here or there but I’m used to the system now and it’s not an issue. Happy VW customer

I want a manual transmission car without touchscreens, with real gages, without ANY of this mandated crap like Airbags, ESP and seatbelt warners. It really makes me sick that the government forces utter crap on me which I don't want. Thank god they letting me still drive old and used cars. My daily driver at the moment is a BMW E28 525i. That thing really rips (because it weighs less than 3,000 pounds), it is extremely comfortable and because of the 5 speed transmission with overdrive I get about 25 mpg on the highway.

@neml5755 I have a 2011 Mercedes S212 as a company car for my small business (I own and run an engine machine shop). I really like that car, but this 2011 Benz is about the last car I can "tolerate" when it comes to electronics and "beeping things". Please don't get me wrong; I am not constantly cursing and screaming "why aren't those companies making cars which I like". As long as I am allowed to drive used/old cars, I am totally fine. I drive rental cars quite often and mostly it is a real nightmare for me. Especially because all those beeping and blinking things which you aren't even allowed to turn off anymore.
EVs, ICE, doesn't matter. All of them, across the board, and with every auto maker the biggest problem is the damn price of these things. No way in Hell people taking out 6, 7, and 8 year loans with payments well north of $1000 can last. I'll just keep socking away all the OT money I can.
My neighbor works in the Chattanooga VW plant and has been laid off for a few months and is not expected to go back to work until January. This was caused by a defective door handle supposedly. My friend works on electric vehicles.
If anybody is interested, you can calculate the size of the battery needed to replace gasoline by multiplying gallons of gasoline by 12.38333 kwh. eg, to replace 21.4 gog, 21.4 * 12.38333 = 265 kwh. Diesel fuel contains a lot more energy (13.75898 kwh) so you would need a much bigger battery, eg. 21.4 * 13.75898 = 295 kwh. In reality the batteries would actually need to be maybe 20% bigger because unlike a gas tank batteries cannot be completely emptied.
That is not fair. Given EV motors are roughly 3x more efficient. And they can regen in the city. Still that would mean 100kwh battery roughly for same range. While still having an much longer stop time.
People are not willing to pay for inferior cars, strange that Tesla is blowing all legacy car companies out of the water. Legacy refuses to change how they build cars, THAT IS THE TRUTH OF THE MATTER!
I don't want electronics, touchscreens and literally hundreds of beeping and blinking driving aids. I want a cheap, reliable car without all that utterly annoying mandated safety and emissions BS. EVs have their place in the transportation mix, but they are not well suited (with their present performance characteristics) for long haul trips. Let the market decide, let each individual decide what they want based on their driving needs. Lets not be like mainland China where they have an EV mandate and no other options, and are trying to push that out to the rest of the world. Let USA and European consumers choose what they want. As for Volkswagen, their executives need a pay cut (let them make it back in stock options through improved stock pricing if German law would allow that) and they need to eliminate or severely reduce the dividend payout to shareholders for the forseeable future.

I think the bigger issues with them are that 1). They are less profitable in China which was their biggest market 2). They have $200B in debt. The market is very competitive and VW probably didn't see the world changing and now their financials are a mess.

New cars are a luxury appliance. With the average consumer having to live more frugal due cost of living they need food and shelter not a brand new car. VW invented 'programmed obsolescence' which relies on more frequent vehicle scrapping and replacement purchase. This plan may be backfiring.

Is it the EV mandate? everybody I know wants an electric car, every single new car around where I live is an EV, Audi, VW, Kia and loads of Teslas. My opinion, the rise in EV take up is market driven, the drop in sales of ICE cars is because people are waiting for EV price drops, range increasing and saving. 400-500-600 mile real range EVs are appearing now, in a couple of years they will be common, if VW didn't go through this transition now as hard as it is, in a few years Chinese brands would decimate the company, this way VW survives which is a good thing. ICE cars are only affordable because of volume, if ICE sales drop 30%-50% because of EV take-up, ICE cars will increase in price per unit massively, the anti EV, pro pollution and child asthma, lobby might just be dragged screaming and shouting into the modern healthy world, just like steam engine fanatics were in the past. Middle aged men, ICE enthusiasts will be able to gather at conventions like steam train enthusiasts do today to talk about how wonderful the past was.

EV’s will be cheaper and faster to build. Cars are becoming expensive for most people as well as repairs and maintenance. Future is more uber, ridesharing and robotaxis. USA was a supersizing nation now downsizing. We need more battery plants worldwide. Chinese CATL is the largest battery factory in the world. China 10 years ahead of even Tesla. Tesla is more a software/hardware battery company that happens to make cars. Batteries for the grid and home are going well. As well as its AI DOJO and Colossus’s computer.

Ideally they should do that, indeed. But big brands such as BMW don't want this EV mandate to be cancelled, so it will be very difficult.
The new ID Buzz has a starting price of almost $70K. That's before the dealer adds a markup to the MSRP.

I’m one year into owning my vw golf gti club sport. It’s fantastic. Totally reliable. I can go out to play in it from time to time and it leaves a grin on my face or I can pootle around in eco mode and overall I’m happy with consumption. All the critics of the infotainment system need to chill. I would like a button or dial here or there but I’m used to the system now and it’s not an issue. Happy VW customer

Thank god they letting me still drive old and used cars. My daily driver at the moment is a BMW E28 525i. That thing really rips (because it weighs less than 3,000 pounds), it is extremely comfortable and because of the 5 speed transmission with overdrive I get about 25 mpg on the highway.

@neml5755 I have a 2011 Mercedes S212 as a company car for my small business (I own and run an engine machine shop). I really like that car, but this 2011 Benz is about the last car I can "tolerate" when it comes to electronics and "beeping things". Please don't get me wrong; I am not constantly cursing and screaming "why aren't those companies making cars which I like". As long as I am allowed to drive used/old cars, I am totally fine.
I drive rental cars quite often and mostly it is a real nightmare for me. Especially because all those beeping and blinking things which you aren't even allowed to turn off anymore.

My neighbor works in the Chattanooga VW plant and has been laid off for a few months and is not expected to go back to work until January. This was caused by a defective door handle supposedly. My friend works on electric vehicles.

If anybody is interested, you can calculate the size of the battery needed to replace gasoline by multiplying gallons of gasoline by 12.38333 kwh. eg, to replace 21.4 gog, 21.4 * 12.38333 = 265 kwh. Diesel fuel contains a lot more energy (13.75898 kwh) so you would need a much bigger battery, eg. 21.4 * 13.75898 = 295 kwh. In reality the batteries would actually need to be maybe 20% bigger because unlike a gas tank batteries cannot be completely emptied.
That is not fair. Given EV motors are roughly 3x more efficient. And they can regen in the city.
Still that would mean 100kwh battery roughly for same range. While still having an much longer stop time.
People are not willing to pay for inferior cars, strange that Tesla is blowing all legacy car companies out of the water. Legacy refuses to change how they build cars, THAT IS THE TRUTH OF THE MATTER!

EVs have their place in the transportation mix, but they are not well suited (with their present performance characteristics) for long haul trips. Let the market decide, let each individual decide what they want based on their driving needs. Lets not be like mainland China where they have an EV mandate and no other options, and are trying to push that out to the rest of the world. Let USA and European consumers choose what they want. As for Volkswagen, their executives need a pay cut (let them make it back in stock options through improved stock pricing if German law would allow that) and they need to eliminate or severely reduce the dividend payout to shareholders for the forseeable future.

I think the bigger issues with them are that 1). They are less profitable in China which was their biggest market 2). They have $200B in debt. The market is very competitive and VW probably didn't see the world changing and now their financials are a mess.

New cars are a luxury appliance. With the average consumer having to live more frugal due cost of living they need food and shelter not a brand new car. VW invented 'programmed obsolescence' which relies on more frequent vehicle scrapping and replacement purchase. This plan may be backfiring.

Is it the EV mandate? everybody I know wants an electric car, every single new car around where I live is an EV, Audi, VW, Kia and loads of Teslas. My opinion, the rise in EV take up is market driven, the drop in sales of ICE cars is because people are waiting for EV price drops, range increasing and saving. 400-500-600 mile real range EVs are appearing now, in a couple of years they will be common, if VW didn't go through this transition now as hard as it is, in a few years Chinese brands would decimate the company, this way VW survives which is a good thing.
ICE cars are only affordable because of volume, if ICE sales drop 30%-50% because of EV take-up, ICE cars will increase in price per unit massively, the anti EV, pro pollution and child asthma, lobby might just be dragged screaming and shouting into the modern healthy world, just like steam engine fanatics were in the past. Middle aged men, ICE enthusiasts will be able to gather at conventions like steam train enthusiasts do today to talk about how wonderful the past was.

EV’s will be cheaper and faster to build. Cars are becoming expensive for most people as well as repairs and maintenance. Future is more uber, ridesharing and robotaxis. USA was a supersizing nation now downsizing. We need more battery plants worldwide. Chinese CATL is the largest battery factory in the world. China 10 years ahead of even Tesla. Tesla is more a software/hardware battery company that happens to make cars. Batteries for the grid and home are going well. As well as its AI DOJO and Colossus’s computer.
The main problem is Chinese EVs.they are cheaper,better quality,better performance than anything that VW can produce.Backed financialy by the Chinese government. Many Chinese firms only produce EVs
