He really is a genius. He doesn't do all the beautiful orchestration, but he sure has a knack for mind-blowing songwriting. _The Poet and the Pendulum_ is one of the few works of art that consistently makes me cry. It's one of the heaviest (emotionally) songs I can think of.
Marko is basically the godfather of finnish heavy metal, his first band Tarot just blew everyone away in the 80's. And he was the perfect fit for Nightwish at this point.
In case this is your first time you hear Marko, he formed a band called Tarot in 1982 w/ his brother. Well, actually it was Purgatory at first, but they changed the name in 1984. Marko also released his first solo album a few years back, called Pyre Of The Black Heart. It's been released both in English and Finnish. Also Northern Kings is one of the so called super groups he's been with plus featured in many other projects

Kiss While Your Lips Are Still Red, and The Islander are great solo pieces from him in Nightwish. Keep going, Ray. You've only scratched the surface.
This is a band where individuals are all crazy talented but they do not flaunt their skills with the expense of the song/story. They'll do what the song needs and do solo astray. No ego.

Marko won the Finnish version of the Masked Singer. I love it when reactors get their first Marko experience with this particular song. And this reaction was just pure gold! There such a great Marko rabbit hole within the rabbit hole that is Nightwish. Marko also make several guest vocal appearances with other bands like Delain (eg. The Gathering, Sing to Me, and more)

Yes, there are songs with Marko as the primary vocalist, if I'm not mistaken, they're in Gabriel's list and you will get to them in time. Marko also fronted a band called Tarot and is one of the vocalists for a band called Northern Kings (which has released several EPIC covers of familiar songs). Floor said that this was one of the most challenging songs to sing because it was originally sung by the first singer Tarja who only sung in an operatic voice. Floor wanted to sing it using mostly her head voice. There is a key change at the end of the song where it goes even higher! Marco is an awesome singer. To hear the beautiful timbre of his voice you should listen to “While Your Lips Are Still Red from Wembley. Nice reaction. Keep ‘em coming!
Was waiting for it - that moment that Marko comes in. Didn't disappoint! Lol. This song is so amazing. Floor has said it is the hardest for her to sing. The second half of the song is off the rails with how high she is singing and belting consistently. For more Marko, maybe try a trip back in time to hen Tarja was the lead singer and they covered Phantom of the Opera. Marko and Tarja sing that amazingly. Marko also solos his song "The Islander" at Tempere. He also does a tribute to Pink Floyd from the same show that Phantom of the Opera comes from. He features in a few songs with Floor too. Try Romanticide from Wacken 2013. 🙂

Well...At that time in 2013, this song was the most challenging vocal piece for Floor (believe it or not). And now, this song is not only in Nightwish setlist (Current tour), but in Floor's Solo Concert, that was in Amsterdam, as well (I still have to specify the set list for the Floor's upcoming solo tour, but one thing is certain, Floor loves this song) . I heard this song "Live" last year, and even without Marko, Floor did his parts beautifully and this song IS forever beautiful still on this day ! Romanticide is probably next on your list, you'll get some good Marco on that. His best solo performance is probably High Hopes (Pink Floyd cover) at the End of an Era concert. That was the last concert with Their first singer, Tarja, (you'll get to hear Marco's Metal Phantom at that concert, too) Most Nightwish songs have at least Some Marco, and the blend of his voice with Floor's is always spectacular. Best Floor / Marco back and forth for money is Devil and the Deep Dark Ocean, Buenos Aires, 2018, Decades tour.

Welcome to Marko's vocal abilities.🤘🤘He sang backing or co-lead on a lot of songs, and lead on a few, including The Islander, and their cover/tribute of Pink Floyd's High Hopes. He was lead singer of a band called Tarot before joining Nightwish in 2001. Unfortunately, he decided to leave the band for personal reasons in 2021. Yep, same concert, song # 5 of 15, just before Storytime. Floor has said that this is one of the more challenging songs for her to sing. Originally sung by Tarja on the 4th album, Century Child in 2002. Recommend Romanticide from this show next-MORE MARKO!!! lol

With him singing with Floor there are many but Romanticide, Yours is an Empty Hope (see if you can identify who is doing the growl/grunt in this song), a small part of The Poet and The Pendulum, The Greatest Show on Earth and I Wish I Had An Angel just to name a few so don't worry you will hear Marko sing a lot more if you keep listening.

This Wacken (pron: VAW-Kehn) 2013 concert is a masterpiece of live recording and performance...you will eventually see the entire show.
Marko is really really solid in the Phantom of the Opera with the original singer, Tarja. Also a good introduction to her. Might be an interesting reaction if you want to see Floor's take on it as well. Not to rank who's better but by having perspective.

Also very recommendable: "The Poet and the Pendukum" - they don't perform it live anymore due to it bringing up too painful memories. If you want to listen to it do a little background search on that song so you'll know the story. When the time comes to actually listen to it be sure you've got a box of tissue at hand. When Floor starts singing the last segment you certainly will be in a puddle of tears. At least I am everytime I hear it! You can hear more of Marko in a NW context if you watch their version of "Phantom of the opera" and "Ave Maria", no matter if you choose a version with Tarja or Floor. They're equally exceptional good in these...
Nightwish Army South Germany Division I agree 100%. And like I said, without knowing the background to this masterpiece, it's very difficult to understand what's being said. A note of a technical nature: With this work, and this also applies to "The Greatest Show on Earth", you should definitely display the lyrics or have them displayed on a second monitor. Parts of the lyrics are very quiet and are sometimes so drowned out by the music that they are barely understandable. Before Nightwish, Marko Hietala founded Tarot with his brother in 1985 and was also successful with it in Finland. There he was the main singer with his brother. When he first meets Nightwish they have another bass player and he only gives Nightwish half a year. He also makes fun of the bassist for being drunk on stage. Soon after, Nightwish fires the bass player and Marko becomes his successor. Marko spelled it with a K in the original, made it a C to be cool, and then went back to the K because he thought it was idiotic. Although he left Nightwish due to depression and no longer wants to make music, he is now touring Finland with his solo program after a break. This was the song that launched my NW journey and it still has special meaning to me. I see this as a song about yearning for love, something I was all too aware of until I met my wife. Now that she is gone, I see it as a yearning to be with her again. Floor and Marko take this version to another level, and Jukka is an absolute madman in the last minute of the song. great reaction, keep rocking Sabaton.

What I haven't read in the comments is that Marko, interestingly enough, won a European version of The Masked Singer only a few years ago! That being said: I love Ever Dream because it is the most accurate interpretation, musically, of what it's like to be in love. And, this song is the only one I've ever heard a drummer and singer -- Floor and Jukka (pronounced "yoo•ka") -- duet perfectly during a bridge: Floor's vocals sounding desperate, and the drum fills feeling almost frantic. Yet Floor and Jukka pull it off flawlessly. And then, if that's not enough, Jukka just jams it into another gear, and the song just accelerates -- which is when we get to see and hear Floor's belting. And up until Shoemaker on Human :||: Nature, Floor said this was the most difficult song for her to sing.
In my opinion there are two performances of Marko that stand out for me witch are "High Hopes", a tribute to the Pink Floyd original and "Phantom of the Opera" both from the End of An Era concert 2005. Please consider reacting to these videos, I'd love to see it 😘
Definitely go for The Islander (live at Tampere)! Markho has lead vocals there and it's just amazing. Pink Floyd's cover of High Hopes by Nightwish (live, End Of An Era) is mindblowing too. Marko's vocals shine there! He is such a great singer. And the other thing is that his and Floor's vocals go so f***ing great together... like it's insane! Great example of their synergy are songs The Greatest Show On Earth and The Poet And The Pendulum, but save those for later... You will appreciate them and enjoy them more when you know more about the band and all the sounds, melodies, themes and stories they can deliver :)

Haven't seen anyone mention it, so I'll mention it. "I Wish I Had An Angel" features a lot of Marko, along with the band's original singer, Tarja Turunen. Excellent song, and they really lean into the metal! (For a much softer song from Nightwish, I'd highly recommend an older one called "Sleeping Sun", also with Tarja singing.) 😁🤘🌞

You have to watch the complete Wacken 2013 concert! Its on of the best concerts of all time! Nightwish at its best and Floor with an unbelivable voice performance for nearly 2 hours! They did a DVD from this concert called "Showtime, Storytime"

Marko also fronted a band called Tarot and is one of the vocalists for a band called Northern Kings (which has released several EPIC covers of familiar songs). He also released some solo singles, including one following his hiatus from the public eye and departure from Nightwish. 😢

who only sung in an operatic voice. Floor wanted to sing it using mostly her head voice. There is a key change at the end of the song where it goes even higher!

Was waiting for it - that moment that Marko comes in. Didn't disappoint! Lol. This song is so amazing. Floor has said it is the hardest for her to sing. The second half of the song is off the rails with how high she is singing and belting consistently. For more Marko, maybe try a trip back in time to hen Tarja was the lead singer and they covered Phantom of the Opera. Marko and Tarja sing that amazingly. Marko also solos his song "The Islander" at Tempere. He also does a tribute to Pink Floyd from the same show that Phantom of the Opera comes from. He features in a few songs with Floor too. Try Romanticide from Wacken 2013. 🙂

Well...At that time in 2013, this song was the most challenging vocal piece for Floor (believe it or not).
And now, this song is not only in Nightwish setlist (Current tour), but in Floor's Solo Concert, that was in Amsterdam, as well (I still have to specify the set list for the Floor's upcoming solo tour, but one thing is certain, Floor loves this song) .
I heard this song "Live" last year, and even without Marko, Floor did his parts beautifully and this song IS forever beautiful still on this day !

Romanticide is probably next on your list, you'll get some good Marco on that. His best solo performance is probably High Hopes (Pink Floyd cover) at the End of an Era concert. That was the last concert with Their first singer, Tarja, (you'll get to hear Marco's Metal Phantom at that concert, too) Most Nightwish songs have at least Some Marco, and the blend of his voice with Floor's is always spectacular.
Best Floor / Marco back and forth for money is Devil and the Deep Dark Ocean, Buenos Aires, 2018, Decades tour.

Welcome to Marko's vocal abilities.🤘🤘He sang backing or co-lead on a lot of songs, and lead on a few, including The Islander, and their cover/tribute of Pink Floyd's High Hopes. He was lead singer of a band called Tarot before joining Nightwish in 2001. Unfortunately, he decided to leave the band for personal reasons in 2021.
Yep, same concert, song # 5 of 15, just before Storytime. Floor has said that this is one of the more challenging songs for her to sing. Originally sung by Tarja on the 4th album, Century Child in 2002.

For more Marco there's only two things to say, The Islander live from Tampere and High Hopes. Well actually not only two things but it's a good start.

With him singing with Floor there are many but Romanticide, Yours is an Empty Hope (see if you can identify who is doing the growl/grunt in this song), a small part of The Poet and The Pendulum, The Greatest Show on Earth and I Wish I Had An Angel just to name a few so don't worry you will hear Marko sing a lot more if you keep listening.

Marko is really really solid in the Phantom of the Opera with the original singer, Tarja. Also a good introduction to her. Might be an interesting reaction if you want to see Floor's take on it as well. Not to rank who's better but by having perspective.

Also very recommendable: "The Poet and the Pendukum" - they don't perform it live anymore due to it bringing up too painful memories. If you want to listen to it do a little background search on that song so you'll know the story. When the time comes to actually listen to it be sure you've got a box of tissue at hand. When Floor starts singing the last segment you certainly will be in a puddle of tears. At least I am everytime I hear it!
You can hear more of Marko in a NW context if you watch their version of "Phantom of the opera" and "Ave Maria", no matter if you choose a version with Tarja or Floor. They're equally exceptional good in these...

And like I said, without knowing the background to this masterpiece, it's very difficult to understand what's being said.
A note of a technical nature: With this work, and this also applies to "The Greatest Show on Earth", you should definitely display the lyrics or have them displayed on a second monitor.
Parts of the lyrics are very quiet and are sometimes so drowned out by the music that they are barely understandable. This should be borne in mind if one wishes to make anything based on these two masterpieces.

Before Nightwish, Marko Hietala founded Tarot with his brother in 1985 and was also successful with it in Finland. There he was the main singer with his brother. When he first meets Nightwish they have another bass player and he only gives Nightwish half a year. He also makes fun of the bassist for being drunk on stage. Soon after, Nightwish fires the bass player and Marko becomes his successor. Marko spelled it with a K in the original, made it a C to be cool, and then went back to the K because he thought it was idiotic. Although he left Nightwish due to depression and no longer wants to make music, he is now touring Finland with his solo program after a break.

Most new people to Nightwish are stunned when they first hear Marko (Floor is not the only singer?!), but those still don't know what the future has in store :)
This was the song that launched my NW journey and it still has special meaning to me. I see this as a song about yearning for love, something I was all too aware of until I met my wife. Now that she is gone, I see it as a yearning to be with her again. Floor and Marko take this version to another level, and Jukka is an absolute madman in the last minute of the song. great reaction, keep rocking Sabaton.
@Rayactions: Rachel, that face you made, hearing Marko, made this whole video! What I haven't read in the comments is that Marko, interestingly enough, won a European version of The Masked Singer only a few years ago!
That being said: I love Ever Dream because it is the most accurate interpretation, musically, of what it's like to be in love. And, this song is the only one I've ever heard a drummer and singer -- Floor and Jukka (pronounced "yoo•ka") -- duet perfectly during a bridge: Floor's vocals sounding desperate, and the drum fills feeling almost frantic. Yet Floor and Jukka pull it off flawlessly. And then, if that's not enough, Jukka just jams it into another gear, and the song just accelerates -- which is when we get to see and hear Floor's belting.
And up until Shoemaker on Human :||: Nature, Floor said this was the most difficult song for her to sing.
In my opinion there are two performances of Marko that stand out for me witch are "High Hopes", a tribute to the Pink Floyd original and "Phantom of the Opera" both from the End of An Era concert 2005. Please consider reacting to these videos, I'd love to see it 😘

And the other thing is that his and Floor's vocals go so f***ing great together... like it's insane!
Great example of their synergy are songs The Greatest Show On Earth and The Poet And The Pendulum, but save those for later... You will appreciate them and enjoy them more when you know more about the band and all the sounds, melodies, themes and stories they can deliver :)

Haven't seen anyone mention it, so I'll mention it. "I Wish I Had An Angel" features a lot of Marko, along with the band's original singer, Tarja Turunen. Excellent song, and they really lean into the metal! (For a much softer song from Nightwish, I'd highly recommend an older one called "Sleeping Sun", also with Tarja singing.) 😁🤘🌞

You have to watch the complete Wacken 2013 concert! Its on of the best concerts of all time! Nightwish at its best and Floor with an unbelivable voice performance for nearly 2 hours! They did a DVD from this concert called "Showtime, Storytime"
