- The biggest challenge with having a bow mounted motor on your kayak is how do you stow and deploy it. Here is how I solved this issue. All the credit for this idea goes to Mike Case.

Thanks Gene, snowing out up here in Maine. Perfect time for some kayak rigging!
Is there a term for those pulleys to just order those instead of having to buy the rudder kit
Waiting also ...
Very innovative Gene! That shock cord idea was brilliant.
Great video! Hope it helps a lot of people. I did mine a little differently. My cable for the foot release goes through a Hobie through hull kit in and out of the kayak next to my left foot. And I have a deck guide installed upside down next to my hatch to keep it up out of the way. I use an eyelet on my right forward gear track to hold my motor pull cord. I am going to move the time point of the motor to be like yours to force the motor on its side. I currently just stand up and pull it back to lock. If I'm just putting it up for shallow stuff, I tie it off on a gt cleat.
Thank You so much for sharing your install - Looking to get this done in 2023
Would love to
See footage of you using on the water the pulleys in action. I have a minn Kotta and it is a pain to get back aboard in the kayak
In all your time fishing with trolling motor on bow of kayak, have you ever snagged fishing line on trolling motor when landing a fish (or casting/reeling in general)? Seems to be my only concern at the moment. Love your videos; keep us the great work. Go Dawgs!
@flukemaster just turn your front pulley upside down. have it mounted on the inside that way the Amstel is going the direction the pulley is designed for, it shouldn't bind then right?
Would you happen to have a video link on how to do the stow and deploy cable on a hobie pa14 on the seat cable??
Wow this video just saved me from tearing my motor apart ahahhaa wheeeeew thank you for a good Ol Gem of a video
Jene I think the reason it gets stuck when deploying is the the prop is on the side where the mount pushes the motor the heavy end should be on the side where the motor mount releases it
6:06 the things sticking up right about the letter d is what deploys it you want the heavy end on that side not the prop see how at 5:55 see how the heavy end wants to go but it needs a little push that’s where the little push things helps the heavy end pushes the rest down cause of inertia.
Gene, how do you deal with the pull cable being firmly attached to a shaft that spins as the trolling motor is being operated? Do you have problems with the cable wrapping around the shaft or getting tangled around other items at the front of the boat when using "the spot lock" feature? Thanks
How is the drilled release pedal holding up? I see OBX has some sort of metal bracket they make that attaches to the bottom of the pedal. Just making choices over here...
Hey man, do you have a link to the bracket? I'm trying to find other solutions also... TIA

Love how you act like you came up with all these mods!
do you think shock cord/ bungee cord could be used from the trolling motor to the pull handle at the seat?
Gene, would it be worth while to put a strong enough section of shock cord to assist in pulling the shaft forward on deployment to avoid having to manually push it with a paddle? More lines = more headache and weight, but it was the first idea that popped into my mind. I definitely like the set up.
Hey Gene, what’s do you use to keep the rope from sliding down the shaft on the MotorGuide and from wrapping up when turning. Thanks for your time sir.
simple spring mech at tm head can fix your deploy issue. stowed spring is depressed hit latch springs push head forward. uses 2 1/2" spring on each side when you pull up , head compresses spring . when depressing latch spring pushes out tm head and it goes. did this with my 85 lb haswing works like a champ . had xi3 on a yak i sold with same basic mech.
That sounds great. The only thing that worries me about metal springs is exposure to salt water. I’d have to replace than too often.
@@Flukemaster yea i do tots of rc, trucks etc. And i plastic dipped them, most of what i fish is brackish,
What’s your opinion on putting a trolling motor with the automatic stow/deploy feature?
I appreciate all of the information but it seems like for the money getting an old town auto pilot already hooked up to drop in a battery is worth it. I appreciate it’s probably more in total cost, but I’ve got the yak and motor warranty.
Interested what the opinions are
I check YakArrack an did not see them. I am talking about the piece you used to run a line to the quick release or kick pad on the trolling motor you said that she got them from a old anchor kit
Hello, how often do you run your motorguide in brackish water?. I see the 36 inch saltwater version isn't avaliable till next year. And if like to get the motorguide sooner. However I've been doing more redfish fishing in brackish here lately? Thanks
I think you will find it releases better if you store it with the prop on the opposite side so if you looking from the seat to the bow prop on left side pull cord on the right side. Let me know if it helps also I spray some silicone spray on the peddle release parts under just to keep it free
HI Gene, how do you clear grass from the prop? BTW, very nice meeting you at The Headwaters Lake Hog Hunt Bass Tournament.
Thanks. Going to add these tips!
Any suggestions for mounting bracket to go under quick release bracket for 2017 Jackson Coosa?
How is the motor Guide holding up.
Gene i have the bonafide SS 107 will the motor guide trolling motor fit on the front like the 127
Are kill switches for these trolling motors a thing yet?
How do you make sure there is no leak through the rope hole?
Very helpful. Thanks for uploading.
Great advice. Thank you Gene.
Gene,
First things first glad to see your up and about getting back to your regular self, Happy Thanksgiving to the family and you. You are always adding to the development of the #KayakFishingIndustry, making things easier for everyone to learn from your #R&D. I just wanted to thanks as always for you giving us all the content that you do it's always greatly appreciated.
Thank my friends. It was great to see you at the NC last month.
I have a question where did you get the anchor rails from ? I just bought the bonefide SS107 and I just put the Xi3 trolling motor on it I like the ideas that you have
They are the 12" gear tracks from YakAttack.
What kind of battery do u use for the xi3 ?
Nice setup, thanks for the tips.
Smart solutions! Nice.
What length shaft do you think works best for a kayak?
36" shaft
Where can I order this motorguide xi3 36 inch for my bonafide ss127 I have the oneajective mount but can't find the trolling motor please help!!??
I ordered mine off Walmart.com. $730 and was the cheapest place I could find it.
I used a go cart throttle cable to release the motor, got the one threaded on one end , NEW GO CART MINI BIKE 56" BRAKE THROTTLE CABLE BARREL & BALL ENDS SMOOTH ACTION...... EBAY
Doesn't that add to much weight to front and is torpedo worth the money ?? Thank you!!
I use a Torqeedo 1103 on the back and an Xi3 at the same time when I’m fishing and love it but when I’m forced by KBF rules to choose between the two I go with the Xi3 because it’s more than just a propulsion motor. It’s a fishing tool.
Does anchor mode work without Pinpoint GPS?
No you will have to buy the Pinpoint GPS. Amazon allows you to purchase it in 5 monthly payments. With the money!
Great video.....helped me put alot
Great info thanks
Dude, if you stow your xi3 head pointed to the right instead of the left, it will fall off like butter when you deploy. Every time. Try it.
Good my frnds.. love
@2:12 "Scavaged" : adv. A term used to define the act of having eaten left over cabbage.
😂
Salvaged and scavenged thus scavaged lol
Abe_Sinclair You pulled a malapropism.
scav·enge
/ˈskavənj/
verb
search for and collect (anything usable) from discarded waste.
"people sell junk scavenged from the garbage"
Similar: rummage, search, hunt, look etc.
search for discarded items or food in (a place).
"the mink is still commonly seen scavenging the beaches of California"
I didn't drill any holes anywhere works great check out my video on my RUclips and the locking mechanism gets sticks sometimes I've heard and it did happen to me so far solved that as well hope that helps.
I’m getting a new setup for moving bait versatility. I am going to be throwing mostly blades jigs on it. What gear ratio should I get? I know many recommend both 7:1 and 6:1. I am just having trouble deciding.
Or you could buy a Minn Kota Ulterra that comes with auto stow/deploy and trim at the touch of a button..... But Gene is sponsored by Motorguide so commence with the McGuyvering 😅👍
And add several more pounds to the front of your boat. I’ve tried both Minn Kota and MotorGuide and I know the good and bad from both. If you’ve followed me fir long enough you know that my integrity is way more important than any sponsorship.
I hear that, hehas jumped 3 companies in a few years.Thats why you take anything from a sponsered angler with a grain of salt.
This stuff was out by a nucanoe angler long time back
@@Flukemaster This is refreshing to know.
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Work smarter, not harder.
Too much stuff for a yak
