  • Happy Birthday, Denton County! 🍰
Tuesday, April 11, the Denton County Commissioners Court celebrated Denton County's 177th Birthday at the Courthouse-on-the-Square.
Peggy Riddle, Director of the Office of History & Culture, shared a brief history of the county's origins.
Denton County was created on April 11, 1846, by the First Texas State Legislature, carving out a portion of Fannin County to create it. The county seat was not always in Denton, but first was in Pinckneyville and later Alton before the final location in the City of Denton.
In 1850, the population was 641 residents, and the county continues to grow, reaching over 977,280 as of July 2022. Currently, Denton County ranks as the 4th fastest growing county in the nation.
There have been three courthouses within the City of Denton. The first was a wooden structure that burned on Christmas Eve in 1875. The second, a brick structure built in 1876, remained for 20 years before the current Courthouse-on-the-Square, built in 1896 using limestone from a quarry north of Denton.
