My slumbering city! Where is the spirit of your spring? Where are you crowds, your passion, your zeal? The bitter tears of fall creep through veins in every leaf; Where is your breath of sunrise, the scent of your green? The enemy fields its troops in your markets and streets; Where is the clamor of your riders and your horse’s screams? How do you fare pinned beneath a Tatar spear? Where is your prowling lion? Where is your heart of steel? The night is desolate, the taverns are closed; Where are your riotous drunks? Where is their roar? Faces are sallow... ~Khamushane ("Silently"), by the great Iranian poet and essayist Mohamed Reza Shafie Kadkani (b. 1939). The poem is set here to a hauntingly beautiful musical arrangement composed by Ostadh (maestro) Majid Derakshani, the renowned Iranian tar player and Classical musician. This arrangement was produced in response to the haunting silence of Tehran's usually packed, vibrant streets, which come gloriously to life with the advent of spring. The poem itself invokes the horrors of the brutal thirteenth century Mongol conquests of Iran, which temporarily turned its teeming cities into haunted necropoles. Yet the enemy troop here is the invisible pandemic virus, the taverns symbols of all the usual joys of daily life interrupted. The young singer, Yara Daneshvar, is one of the Classically trained Persian choralists of Majid Derakshani's Classical and folk ensemble Mah Banoo.
Maestro Derakhshani is a true follower Colonel Vaziri and progressive approach in our music with wonderful compositions such as this one with beautiful lyrics and vocalist. Thanks!
Is this the same singer who also sang Mahbano Ensemble (Ma Ra Bus)…? I love this song Ma Ra Bus She sings nice... Liked this too... God bless you all... Love from India 🇮🇳
No, but she is part of the same ensemble group led by Ostadh maestro Majid Derakhshani. The main singer in Mah Ra Bas is Sahar Mohammadi, a young rising star of classical Persian music. The elder lady who sings is a renowned folk singer Hoorvash Khalili, one of the first women singers in Iran to record music publicly. So the significance of that video was that it featured one of the first trailblazers of female singers of traditional Persian music singing along with one of the leading young ones today. God bless you and Khoda Hafez from the United States.
