As a Frenchman and judo competitor (black belt), I have a great deal of appreciation for Riner. But I find that in this weight category, the normal rules are counterproductive and favor the "penalty game". Saito showed great merit and fighting spirit and the fight should have gone ahead. I'm in favour of longer fights in this category.

How many wins will they give Teddy for not throwing people? He's dominating the grips but refuses too attack except for little foot taps. They give Riner a shido for pulling gi over his head early but then ignore it later on? The favouritism Teddy gets is unreal. He almost wins world champion without throwing anyone

Judo has truly turned into a disgusting art. Saito attacked 100 times but did less for 5 seconds and was penalized. Teddy doesn’t attack for a solid 2 minutes and is on the Back foot and doesn’t get a penalty. The ridiculous rule of not being allowed to duck under the arm is also still in place I see. I mean, you surely don’t want the taller opponent with that grip to actually have to fight for the grip or for that matter do something with the grip. No no no, just let the taller opponent gain the grip and then hang on the shorter one, because leg grabs? No, those are also removed and thus have nullified any proper and dangerous attacks of pushing an opponent down.

Riner was more expert and cautious, appropriately, and got the match home using experience. Saito was more spectacular but a bit careless in his reactions. At this level, you pay that dearly.

But what would you do against Saito or against Rinner? Nothing I'm sure.

Riner's first penalty was very debatable. Riner, even when looking rusty, is better than Saito. When Riner gets fully on form he will crush Saito. Keep in mind Teddy is 35 now, which is like 50 in many sports. The greatest judoka ever, even when looking sloppy, as in this match. A more focused Riner will again beat everyone else.
