  • Watch in High Definition! The Pacific Southwest Railway Museum recently returned its GE 80 ton Center Cab locomotive to service after some major work on its trucks. The locomotive is numbered 7285 and is painted in a Southern Pacific Tiger Stripe paint with San Diego and Arizona Lettering. The locomotive has two engines; one on each side of the cab. The two engines pump out a total of 670 horsepower. This locomotive is typically used on the museum's shorter trains when 3873's (the museum's GP9) muscle isn't needed. The locomotive was a US military locomotive during its service life and saw use in many different bases. It was used for switching many trains. It is nicknamed the goat due to its constant activity when it was is service with the military.
    More information on the Museum, the Museum's fleet, as well as ticket sales can be found at www.psrm.org/.
    This Video Shows the full startup sequence of a GE 80 Ton Centercab Locomotive. SD&A 7285 is an 80 ton, 1st generation diesel. It has two 335 Horsepower Cummins NTA-855-L4 non turbo charged prime movers, two shaft driven air compressors, and does not have multiple unit capability.
    Startup is much simpler than the museum's GP9. First, engine #2 has a small knob (engine governor) that must be partially unscrewed to allow it to start. Then, the water, engine oil, and compressor oil levels on both engines are checked. The main battery switch is then connected and the necessary switches are turned on. Then, both engines are individually started by the touch of a button. The air charges up and the locomotive is ready to go!
    Thanks to Jack, the engineer, for the useful information on this locomotive.
    Enjoy!

    They had the NTC-400 in the USMC,the same engine was also used in Military trucks like the M915-M920 & M915A1-M920A1 at that,before they phased them out by the 1990's and early 2000's.The same engine is very famous in multiple trucks out there with Peterbilts,Freightliners,Kenworths,etc.

    Stephan does such an awesome job video taping and most important labeling, the Museum is lucky to have him. We could use another dozen just like him to keep the Museum running.

    Love the early 80 tonners, with those monster Cummins LI600's!
    Thanks for sharing...

      The GE 80T's that I have all seen from the USMC had the 14.0L NTC-400,haven't seen a LI600,never heard of that one before.The NTC-400 I'm thinking about is a popular engine among trucks,and Military trucks had them too,the M915-M920 & M915A1-M920A1 had the exact same engine before they retired them,the M812-M820 just like the M923-M943 and M923A1-M945A1 also had a 14.0L but it was a NHC-250 instead,only the engine block was the same displacement.

    That's not the original control stand configuration, the 80 tonner were I work has the original control setup, looks nothing like that one. The military made some major improvements to that locomotive during its service life.

    +RailsandRoads 1801 is the GP9 Santa Maria Valley operates, the same Railroad that ran the railbus @0:14. I love to go railfanning here(I'm from SM), especially finding the 70 tonners.

    @RailsandRoads It broke down for reasons I can't remember over 10 years ago. It has had many electrical faults which have a all been repaired. Right now, they're widening the walkways so they can install handrails on the edge of the walkway (instead of on the hood where they are now which makes for a pretty serious fall hazard.) They're also working to try to make it cleaner. ALCOs normally belch smoke like a steam locomotive.

    @Locomotive450 the 1801 (i believe) was used in that kids movie, "there goes a train" if i remember correctly

    @RailsandRoads Actually, it was the ALSO MRS-1 (2104). The two EMD MRS-1s are 1809 and 1820.

    @RailsandRoads It still does (3 in fact. 1 ALCO and 2 EMDs.) We're working on getting the ALCO running again.

    The engines are idling at 600 RPM, is this machine DC traction drive similar to the 'big boys?'

    Who is the hobo up there trying to steal a train?

  • @Locomotive450
    @Locomotive450  12 лет назад +1

    @robertgift No, it can move with only one engine running, but it would only have 1/2 the horsepower, 1/2 the tractive effort, and 1/2 the air compressor power working.

    Do you need to have BOTH engines operating?

  • @Locomotive450
    @Locomotive450  11 лет назад +1

    Yeah, the USMC modernized their fleet of these locos with newer AAR control stands and 26C brake stands.

  • @Locomotive450
    @Locomotive450  13 лет назад

    @RailsandRoads Well, I'm sure it won't be that much cleaner. Part of the reason is that more smoke means more sparks. Campo is very susceptible to wildfires due to the dry climate. Any spark from a locomotive that lands on something flammable coulde lead to a fire. Also, on a hot day when you have to run with the windowns and doors open, making the engineer inhale all that smoke is deadly. Some even started wearing goggles when they ran the ALCO.
