Beautifully done, Jimbo, thanks soo much. I'm generally a GA/DC-6 piston guy so I came to this plane with hesitation. She is by far my favorite. She's quirky, has soul and character and requires some seat of the pants. She tolerates you when you do as she pleases, otherwise your life becomes rather complicated. The devs have done a great job capturing that. So unlike the stale, antiseptic low wing twin passenger computers everyone seems to fly in our sim. You can do almost anything with her. Unimproved, stol, great range, flys well low or high... just amazing. Someone aptly described her as a mini C-17. Thanks again for your fine work showing off this great airplane.

The elevator movement on the ground is actually correct, the FCOM describes this as follows.
"At low speed on the ground, the servo tabs cannot generate a significant aerodynamic force to move the elevator. If the column is moved far enough, the servo tab meets the elevator travel stops and the elevator then moves with the column. When a full and free check column check is made on the ground, both the tab and the elevator movement is checked"
Just another weird quirk of this aircraft!

Thank you! I realised my mistake with the hydraulic comment too (the elevator is cable drive, right?) But must've missed that part!

Created the regional jet market, arguably.
Few additional notes first ( that "more" button is a bit of a pandora's box lid ):
    * The extra button to get into the Aircraft page on the EFB is there to prevent you accidentally opening it & then equally accidentally clicking an aircraft state in flight, which thanks to thet way the mouse can work was not uncommon!
    * You can turn the FMS off entirely via FMS Navigation checkbox iin settings.
    * Sync mode is a push-and-hold thing like other control-wheel systems, there's a second bind for that ( just in case you prefer the toggle ) which I have completely forgotten, it's in patchnotes from around v1.03 or so. It's ok for VS but I find it quite an annoyance, and usually bang the alt hold on so I can adjust speed before putting IAS back in, and just use the throttles to control rate.
    * DC pump pressurises the brake accumulator now - it's not actually quite right, you're meant to have to hold it unless you latch it with the red latch. Very little you can do to test it unless you've drained a little brake pressure ( I think your pressure did rise a little when you turned the pump on ). Also powers the emergency gear release I think.
    * Overhead annunciator test button is on the FO's side of the overhead.
    ---
My own thoughts on it... first the things I'm less happy with/bugs I've noticed:
    * The model just feels a bit fuzzy, is the best way I can describe it - there's some great texture work, but then there's seemingly always a not-quite-so crisp area somewhere in your field of view, just that littlle thing trying to drag you out of your suspension of disbelief. Obviously it's a reworked XP11 port ( and I don't know if that was ported in from somerwhere else ) and a little old. Not bad at all, just ... aged a bit. The model itself is generally awesome, but something feels off about the nose - just feels like it's been punched & got a bit swollen & not quite as pointy as it should be.
    * If you're typing in the EFB it'll totally lock out any control input until you hit enter/return. That might be a MSFS thing but it's really disconcerting the first couple of times when you can't work out why your controls aren't responding.
    * Entering numbers in the EFB is a nightmare, I still haven't worked out how to just type a passennger count in.
    * If you shut down the inboard engines then *even with the electric pumps on*, you get one shot of brake retardation. You'll show pressure in the brake system & the discs will heat up but the aircraft won't slow down. All you need is one of the inboards turning on the starter ( don't even need the engine pumps active ) and the aircraft will stop again.
    * I wish the ASI was bigger! but that's more a fault of the real aircraft. If we ever get a RJ version that might help.
    * The FMS... yeah. Does extremely basic LNAV ( at least it can load flightplans from both the game & Simbrief ) and that's about it. It can't handle turns greater than 180 degrees, it'll turn the wrong way, so you're flying teardrop ILS approaches by hand. Not *exactly* JF's fault given it's the WT one, but they did choose to use it. Doesn't actually bother me *that* much, but sometimes it can do something really dumb & you remember you're in a game.
    * Alt cap doesn't quite capture ( about 100ft off ) but known bug.
    * The cargo version needs an extra handling vehicle, the little luggage ramp doesn't really cut it :p would be nice to have a loadmaster respond instead of the cabin crew for that one, but that's just a minor thing.
    * Reasonably sure the RAF ones have TACAN, would be a nice addition. I don't care if there's no controls for the anti-missile lasers. Can we poke one of the regulars who's into St Athan a lot & see if they can get a look in?
    * Haven't managed to disable the stick shaker/pusher yet. I would dearly love the GPWS breaker to be working if there was one breaker to choose :P
    ---
As usual, there's a few more minor grumbles, some of which are aimed at the DeHavillland designers ( yes, was originally a DH study & then most of the work was done at Hatfield even when it was part of HS/BaE, the 146 is a DH project number ). But... on the plus side:
    * It is just *so* fun to fly, and the -100 is not actually short on performance at all, it's just the stretched ones never got their planned engine upgrades. I put it in and out of all sorts of unlikely places. I hand fly it for a considerable amount of a flight which is more than I can say for most of the other aircraft I have in this sim.
    * Sounds *fantastic*. Record a takeoff, stick the camera at the end of the runway, rewind the replay & let it take off over you, spot on.
    ---
I would 100% recommend it. I'm a bit iffy about the price but that is not specific to this particular package, I'm a bit iffy about a lot of pricing in a market like this, especially for ported in content. I've worked in a few relevant areas ( simulation, sim-games, porting/connecting systems ) & I'm well aware how much work can go into a port, but it's still less work than starting from scratch, so I will hold onto my reservations. If you don't mind the price tag and you've made it to the end of the review and through my mutterings without thinking "it's not for me", then *get it*.
    ---
MCT mode on the TMS does what you were trying to do in climb automatically, if I'm not mistaken? and the other thing I find myself doing is swapping nav input to the RH side sometimes rather than just duplicating the LH seat - I don't like how you can't pre-tune NAV2 ( why would it be different to NAV1 ) but there are times stepping around various radio nav aids it can be really handy.

Hi Rich! Thanks for the wonderful write-up, looks like you spent a lot of time on it. I did wonder about the MCT to be quite honest, but went with the guidance provided by the operation videos from JustFlight rather than do something that may be considered incorrect! I will try that some more next time! Jimbo

@@FlyFromHome Haha, I just started typing & all that came out! I notice they've announced the RJ versionss since the video & my response, so hopefully some of the annoyances will be fixed for the 146 too as a part of that work.
Setting the OAT to something higher than actual on the TMS is how you do flex takeoffs, but why you'd *ever* want to do one in a 146 is beyond me. Maybe if you were flying out of Filton...

Only thing I do not like about the aircraft is how it struggles to follow Glideslope in ILS and the DME readout not updating correctly

Lovely video, I really like this plane and still learned a bunch from you :) TMS takes some wrapping your head around but once you get the hang of it it's really awesome, the only time you really feel not having an autothrottle is towards the end of the descent and the approach. But realising your speed has decayed to 2 knots over stall and you're about to fall out of the sky is half the fun, right ? As a bonus, once you understand TMS on the 146 you'll also understand CSC on the Hondajet :)

In Switzerland we use to call the 146 "Jumbolino" (the little Jumbo in reference to the 747).
I loved this plane. An old Swissair pilot told me ones that the 146 was very reliable plane.
PS: The tail number doesn't match with the livery 😉

    • @FlyFromHome
      @FlyFromHome  2 года назад +1

It's a good title! It's definitely good fun to fly, I might start calling it that too :)
Are you referring to the tail being D- (Germany) registered? That's true to the actual aircraft (strangely) as the only Air Nostrum 146s were on a D- register! Have a look here: www.airfleets.net/flottecie/Air%20Nostrum-history-bae146.htm

Exactly, I was referring to the registration. But as I've seen now, the 146 was leased, thank you for the link 👍
Regarding the Jumbolino, even people not being into aviation at all, easily recognized them here in Switzerland. It's a very popular plane.
I've flown once in it. It wasn't very comfortable for me since I'm 186cm tall. But I very much enjoyed the flight. The high wing layout is superb for curious passengers like me ✌️
And the nickname "Jumbolino" matches it perfectly to me.
