New York's Manhattan Chinatown has been hit hard by the effects of Covid-19 since January 2020, even before cases surged in the US. Businesses were impacted as soon as the first coronavirus cases emerged in Wuhan, China. Almost a year later, some businesses have shuttered, while the ones that survived are left reeling from the impact of the pandemic.
Rose Wu, the manager of New Shanghai Deluxe on Mott Street, said her restaurant is only making 20 to 30 per cent of 2019’s revenue. Fortunately, her landlord did not force her to pay rent, she said. But many business owners are still struggling to make ends meet. Some are hoping the upcoming Lunar New Year holiday and the new vaccines will help them see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Actually it's better to not add a 10% surcharge but increase the prices a little. There was a survey conducted that customers will likely be okay if the prices themselves went up a bit rather get slap with a 10% surcharge on their bill.

Some landlords don’t have a choice cause they might have loans to repay. Please look at both sides of that story. I knew a landlord that was in a huge issue because the bank was charging him late fees because he was holding off paying his loan waiting for the restaurant to get enough to pay him. It’s a bad situation all around that I would never wish to be in.

It's sad. I've been in Manhattan since the covid began. The street is 1/4 what it used to be. For the most part, I understand and support the shutdowns due to hospitals being overrun, but it's time to start doing something different. We can't keep this up. The streets are empty and there are close storefronts everywhere. I wonder why I stay here. There isn't much here anymore but high prices and shuttered stores and a growing homeless and violence problem. People want NYC to come back to normal but we can't because everything is shut down and all office workers now work remote

If they actually kept the strict lock down and crushed local transmission down to zero before reopening, then neither the US nor Europe would be dealing with this, as they'd only have to do the strict lock down once. But no....once they got down to 20,000 new cases a day in May, they opened everything back up, and the pandemic never left. Australia and New Zealand are two rare examples of Western countries that adopted China's approach of strict lock down until zero transmission, and they succeeded.

I live in New York and all of my Taiwanese friends left NYC and are back in Taipei with 0 deaths, 0 hospitalizations, and 0 covid because their government - unlike the Trump administration - took the pandemic seriously since the beginning. My friends are clubbing each weekend, going to concerts; the restaurants are thriving. Life is normal there because their government didn't gaslight them.
