This video has first been published as part of my online cello course on patreon corresponding to My CELLO METHOD (details below).

0.17 when to start with vibrato
    0.45 what is the movement
    1.56 single finger play
3.10 the use of the thumb
    4.20 "under doing" the effort
5.26 best practice for vibrato - NOT seamless
    6.24 seamless (continuous) vibrato
    6.48 introducing vibrato in pieces
    7.23 arm position
7.52 how to change the speed of vibrato
    Wrong ideas:
    8.19 lifting the arm
9.40 speed change by stretching fingers apart or keeping together (ballerina)?
    p.s.
    * To Vibrato in Baroque Music:
The Baroque composer Geminiani wrote in 1752: "Use vibrato wherever you can, it sweetens the sound".
Mozart's father Leopold distinguished already between slow and fast vibrato, increasing and decreasing the speed of vibrato (published 1750).
Interestingly enough the Romantic period was the one where hardly any vibrato was used.
Brahms' violin concerto was premiered by Joachim with virtually no vibrato!

Thank you for the tip to first play a note without, then with and then again without vibrato to prevent the finger from sliding away from the note.

I like how you describe 1st finger vibrato; I do that the same way and find it much easier moving the hand back as you describe.

BIG Vibrato fan: Thank you for making this wonderful cello video. I was gifted a cello and started playing it in late September, 2020 as a hobby to deal with isolation, masks and Covid times. I played violin as a kid and was a high beginner or low intermediate at best. I had a little Suzuki and a jazz violin teacher at school. I LOVE the cello. My vibrato and fingerings went into auto pilot as I imitate others. I love to vibrato on the Cello. I need to develop good cello habits now as I am still new and about 1/4 through Suzuki Cello 2 play along (I love play along). I am now trying to teach myself 2d position and I have not needed cello tape but I have purchased it just in case. I see playing 2nd cello position on my G string as an opportunity to improve my vibrato. I am teaching myself as I work 12 hour shifts and can not practice regularly. I vaguely remember vibrato on the violin and am adjusting to the grandeur of vibrato on the Cello. Thank you for your wonderful vibrato techniques. I am getting compliments on my Cello playing. Who knew I could play a Cello ?

I don't think I'll be able to vibrato for a few years, I've just started playing at 51, but that's not my problem. My problem is learning separateness of hand...but I will get it eventually. This tutorial was immensely helpful when that glorious day arrives.☺️

Thank you Georg, would you also do videos on other basics such as cello position, left hand and right hand playing positions? You touched on them a little with the lesson on vibrato and I'm hoping you would do more.

Does anyone have any tips for keeping your 4th finger relaxed when doing vibrato? Mine is always straight and stiff, which makes it hard to vibrate. However I don't know how to fix this problem.
