    It was very rare to hear a Christian Death Metal band. Yet alone one that could go toe to toe with the prominent bands of that era. It was the 90s and it was bloodthirsty evil brutality in Death Metal.

    Great band. My favorite Christian metal band is Living Sacrifice. Especially the first 3 albums. I just discovered a Christian death/doom metal band similar to early My Dying Bride called Paramæcium. I just got their first album Exhumed of the Earth (gold cd limited to 500) this week. The drummer Jayson Sherlock played on Mortification's first 3 albums. Its one of thee heaviest Christian bands i've ever heard. The album originally came out in 1993.

    I respect this band's mission. Steve Rowe not only pioneered Christian Extreme Metal, but he had also created Rowe Productions (which was a label that bred many other great bands; in the same league). His early drummer, Jayson Sherlock, went on to create the first Christian "Unblack Metal" band, Horde. It was solely him; playing all instruments (as raw, fast and dark as he could).
    The Black Metal community and Satanists, were furious about this intrusion; into their realm of darkness. I don't believe Nuclear Blast Records had any knowledge of Sherlock's beliefs (since they had no Christian artists before hand). As a consequence, both the label and Sherlock received hate mail and death threats. That was why he went about his one-man project under the name "Anonymous". Plus, it was a nod to the infamous "Euronymous", of the Black Metal band, "Mayhem". It took many years for us to discover his identity.

    Mortification is an important band in the Christian metal scene because they were one of the first to do death metal and make it big.
    Good analysis and discussion.

    • @tevildo9383
      @tevildo9383 3 года назад

      Their drummer also had a solo “unblack” metal project called Horde that is regarded as one of the first Christian black metal bands ever. So these guys as a group almost singlehandedly invented Christian extreme metal. I personally don’t care much about lyrics, and wouldn’t call myself religious or spiritual at all, but there’s a lot of great metal made by Christian artists. My first introduction to hardcore and punk was Thrice (their older albums), the first actual metal band that I listened to regularly was Silent Planet, and I consider finding the band Slechtvalk to be the moment that I became a metalhead.

    Truth on Mortification, the album this song comes from, Scrolls Of The Megilloth is actually a really solid death metal album all the way through. I'd even go as far as to say the song Lymphosarcoma has riff writing that could compete with bands like Bolt Thrower and Morbid Angel in pure groove-yet-heaviness. Sadly, I can't say the same about most of their albums.
    This album has Jayson Sherlock on drums if I recall, and he's a pretty cool dude. I once had a conversation with him about how Australia is to England what Arkansas is to America. You should probably check out his other bands Paramaecium and Revulsed. Both are pretty top notch. Dude is a masterclass musician imo.

    I think the important thing to notice about the lyrics in regards to grace versus works, which is a pretty impoverished dichotomy, is that in the becoming, the writer does not specify how that mortifying the flesh happens. It is in the context of the crucifixion, which indicates certainly the power for transformation, but the things we do to purify ourselves may be in fact the work of Christ in us as we go to the Father, through Christ, by the Holy Spirit.

It was that bad for him. According to him, he was visited by an angel very close to when he was supposed to die and he ended up surviving. He made a whole album based on that experience. It's called Triumph of Mercy and I think it was their 7th album.
