Instead of drilling holes, what do you think about using flat cables to go through windows or doors etc to connect a hotspot from inside to an outdoor antenna?
Great videos! Thanks very much! Tell me please, Will "RAK Hotspot Miner V2" be able to work in winter - if the temperature is between -10° C and -25° C (14F - -13F) ?
If it's in an enclosure, it runs a bit warm so I think it would be okay at that temperature. From what I understand, the warmer temperatures are the ones which are more concerning.
Great video - looking forward to seeing more and learning more. Ordered my bobcat miner today. Would love to install in attic, and run a cable to antenna on roof. However, Arizona heat will likely destroy the miner in the summer time. Likely need to mount the miner to the ceiling inside the house, and run a cable through the roof. Would love to hear anyone's ideas or concerns with my 15 IQ gameplan.
Amazing video! Nice job. I was wondering, if i set up a Hotspot in my area, and later on my neighbors let's say start to mine as well and we are more than 4 Hotspot in our hexagon, what happens then? Do i have priority for setting it up first or the one that put the Hotspot at the highest location gets the most rewards?
Thanks for the great videos. I have a 35 acre property in an area of Colorado that has no other miners. Do you think I have enough room to create my own personal network of 3 to 5 outdoor miners and your thoughts on this idea? Watching all of your videos to get more information before placing my preorder.
Very interested in answer to this. I have 16 acres wooded very close to north base of mountain. Have mobile home park behind me but no miners found on maps.
Do you have a link for that enclosure? Looks large enough for the Nebra Indoor miner. Your input would be appreciated. Getting two indoors in July (according to Nebra) and the mounting them outdoor now seems like the winning setup for where I can deploy them.
Only a little bit of research. Sounds like the miners themselves are less than a cell phone. I only heard from one person who had concern for the IoT devices themselves? But that might just be conspiracy theory level, not sure. Admittedly not informed in this area other than these devices are going through certification processes.
Only Nebra makes an outdoor intended miner right now. That said, any miner could technically be an outdoor miner if you get it in an enclosure. The recommendation is IP-66. Earnings are also higher if you shorten the cable from the miner to the antenna.
Hello Ed. Really enjoy your videos on the Helium Network. Found them most helpful. I have a question: I have a condo and the previous owner had a DISH antenna on the back fence with coaxial cable running into the condo. Do you know if it's possible to just replace the DISH antenna with an 8dbi antenna, then use the coaxial port in my condo to hook up to a miner or do I need brand new cable for everything to work?
Hi Ballou! Thanks for your videos. Super helpful. Can you tell me if its possible to mount the same antenna to an INDOOR unit that you can mount to an OUTDOOR antenna? I'm thinking about buying the indoor Nebra unit because it will ship earlier and there is a short distance from inside my flat to the roof so I can run the antenna directly from the unit without needing an outdoor casing.
Hello Ed, Thank you for these videos! Nebra sells an outdoor unit with a weatherproofed box. In your opinion, do those stock Antennas need to be replaced despite the advertisement as an outdoor unit? Also can’t you connect your outdoor Miner via WiFi and avoid all the cables other than a weatherproof PoE?
The outdoor Nebra comes with a 3dbi. I think this is entirely worth experimenting with FIRST and then see if you need to upgrade to reach farther out. Also, there's a misunderstanding with your question. If you do PoE, then the internet AND the power would come through your ethernet cable. You would NOT need WiFi in this case.
Thank you for your response Ed and for posting these videos full of valuable information! I misspoke and meant the WiFi with the outdoor power source (no Ethernet). I live on a 8th floor NYC apartment with a balcony and outdoor outlet. Thinking the outdoor set up would be the better option in terms of signal. Obviously indoor is safer in terms of protecting the miner. As of now the hot spot reward zone rate is around 0.5, but will likely decrease as more miners join the network. What would you recommend in terms of outdoor versus indoor? I suppose I can experiment with both and weigh the risk versus reward based on mined HNT. Thanks again!
The outdoor Nebra has an option for a LTE daughter card (10$ per month about for service). It's on their site. You might ask them the specs and if the frequency would work in the US. Take the specs and look around on line and make sure you're getting the best deal. That's the direction I'm going at. Also a great ask on the antenna being an outdoor (weatherproof). Smart to ask. Some on the market with the same specs, are not. happy mining
@@johnnyweb1476 great info thank you! The more pressing issue for me is figuring out a weather proof power option. My porch has a power outlet but I would need to install a weather proofing box to protect the outlet and figure how to run the 12 V 1a adapter inside the protective mining box? Does anyone have experience with solutions for powering an outdoor miner with the power adapter rather than ethernet? Also considering finding some small grade rechargeable battery pack that has 12 v capability? Anyone of anything on the market that would power the Nebra hotspot? Then I could simply charge the battery pack from my porch when the weather is appropriate.
Hey Thanks Ed, for the great content. I was wondering if you'd know if the rak outdoor enclosure is suitable to house a Nebra indoor + POE splitter? If not what would you recommend as a waterproof enclosure.... would be great if you added an affiliate link so we could show some love.

Hi man! I have a question, if i have a Rak Hotspot and I want to buy a 5.8dBi Fiberglass Antenna, which option should I choose between “N-Type Male” - “N-Type Male to RP-SMA” or “N-Type Male to IPEX”?
I have not done a video. I'm guessing Helium has or will have a video describing this. I saw a video of how to set up a hotspot. To transfer, in the Helium App, you tap on the cog at the top right, then tap on Transfer Hotspot... then follow the instructions. Note: the new owner will need to do a location assert which costs HNT if the hotspot has been asserted already.
In UK it seems no aerials are grounded in normal house. Would like to see some real proof either way when you need it. We did have a storm for about 30 minutes last year....
Anything metallic sticking up outdoors becomes a lightening rod, more height = greater lightening potential. Properly grounding an antenna is probably a universally required building code, it is in the USA. Cellular companies go to great lengths to properly ground cell towers for good reason, don't risk your expensive equipment! I've seen radio equipment damaged by lightning, it's not pretty
I don't want to risk downtime because an outdoor setup went wrong (with supply low and demand high). So right now I would recommend an indoor setup. When supply evens out, then I might risk going outdoor to get more coverage.
If my hotspots are clustered in mainly 2 areas, would it be better to create 2 separate accounts to gain the most yield for each area or 1 account for the entire area and likely earn less reward since a lot of the hotspots I would own will be too far away?
It's possible to power the hotspot with PoE. It can also shorten a connecting cable to your antenna or decreasing the size of hole you might have to drill.
Hello brother I’m in need of some help. I am ordering 2 miners fairly soon but would like to set up one at my cousins house about an hour away from my house, will I be able to have access to both of these miners if one isn’t in my home ?
Access is not really necessary per se. I have a hotspot 4 hours away and at most, it's just a request for them to reboot the device, which I haven't done in the 2 months it's been there. The rewards automatically come to you so access isn't required there either. I of course, did the antenna setup on day 1 of install.

My advice create your own network in your area , thats what im working on. There isnt any in my city but im working on placing 10-15 of my own in homes of friends and family.
The further your miner is from the antenna, the more LMR cable you are going to have to run, which will reduce your DBI. He mentioned at the beginning of the video about distance and reduced DBI. Also, if the miner is not at your residence ,it would be a lot harder to access the unit if the owner isn't home.
