  • In both our in-person and online Purely Post and Beam Course we spend a lot of time instructing students on how to sharpen their tools by hand. We created a simple-to-use system that has fantastic results using a Veritas Honing Guide, two pieces of sandpaper and a leather strop. While this is a relatively cheap and easy to use system, it can be slow going and our students often ask about how they speed up the sharpening process.
In this excerpt from our Purely Post and Beam Online Course, Bearded Gaius discusses the use of a Tormek Sharpening System to sharpen a framing chisel, and demonstrates how to get the best results during the process.
If you're interested in more detailed timber framing information like this, check out the lin to our online timber framing course down below.
We have worked hard to compile every last bit of content from our in-person course and put it in an easily digestible, video-by-video, online format. And not only that, but we’ve also tried to anticipate every question that you might ask as a student of our online course, since you don’t have the luxury of asking an instructor during class.
After completing this course, you will go from potentially knowing nearly nothing about timber framing to becoming confident and competent enough to build your own timber frame structure.

I have used various models of Tormek since mid 90's. I prefer it much though those chisels that end being hammered the chisel tip achieved with Tormek is a bit too fragile especially when hitting hard knot. Lots of about this depends chisel metal quality too, but I have circumvented the problem by honing the tip with higher angle to give it strength.
    Keep these good videos coming!

I miss my Tormek, it's in storage. Flat waterstones are just not as much fun!

The problem with sharpening chisels is these big box stores don’t actually sell stones for chisels only knives. If u want to do it the sand paper method the big box stores r limited on the fineness of paper they have in stock which really limits the sharpness of the blade. Does anyone have any suggestions here besides the tormax?

Hey Nicholas-we actually sell a nice, inexpensive kit that includes glass, 180 and 320 grit sandpaper, a leather strop and aluminum oxide strop abrasive: shop.shelterinstitute.com/collections/polishing-equipment/products/shelter-float-glass-and-leather-strop
