    My experience with melons is that they need warm temperatures over night. No less than 15-17 celsius.

    For anyone interested. This is the ultra productive hybrid and supposedly equally tasty version of the Petit Gris de Renne melon, called Griselet: www.johnnyseeds.com/vegetables/melons/french-melons-charentais/griselet-f1-melon-seed-4554.html

    Melons need full sun, all day. They also like heat. In Japan they only grow one melon per plant for those specialized melons that can go for over $1000 each!

    I agree, melons need the right conditions to grow properly, I’d say that they are one of the hardest plants to grow. Susceptibility to disease, rotting, even after successfully growing them you may realize that they arn’t even as sweet as the sugar kiss from the store.
    But don’t give up! :-)

    My first try last year I bought a packet right off the shelf, I got the sweetest cantaloupe ever. Maybe Burpee. This year I planted the saved seeds. Growing nicely with no mildew or fungal problems as of yet. Water them almost everyday. Sweetness seems be heat, watering and of course good soil amendments in the fall.

    Try adding a bunch of limestone to the bed or do half of it and compare the difference. I think you will be pleased. Good luck either way.

    Make rectangular reflectors from space blanket material and position them in the evening or morning (NOT NOON) to shine on the plants. You can also make the wall behind the mellons more reflective this way. Also think about protecting your plants from extra UV they will get by using some kind of titanium oxide spray or using anti-UV glass screens positioned for the 11AM-3PM sun. Moisture should not be a problem if you make these screens on top of plants a bit skewed to one side and they will act as an umbrella for the plants.

    i am growing "Honey Rock" melons for the first time this year.
    So excited!!! Lots of fruit on the vine and about to get the first one. They are small but super sweet allegedly
    They see sun from sunrise until sunset. Which should enable the plants to produce more sugar.

    I am growing Sharlyn this season. Supposed to be easier to grow than others with a longer harvest window. I have very low expectations as I’ve grown 10-15 varieties and I’ve never had a great one. If this doesn’t work I think I’ll finally throw in the towel, but I said that last year.

    I did pretty much the same thing as you last year. 12 varieties from Johnny's. Was a total disaster as well. Mostly because in CT it was basically a record wet summer. Raining close to every day. I decided to not repeat the experiment this year. But if you have good results I look forward to trying whatever variety you recommend next year.

      You will the best luck with hybrids grown for your area. If you can get some fruit off of an heirloom sweet or not keep planting the seeds every year. Plants can adapt to your conditions but could take many years.

      I grow these in Texas and they will always have a spot in my garden. They taste as good as they look but they aren’t top tier quality. They have a very low brix compared to other melons.

      Exactly what Jack said. They're great I'm sure, but not at the level of sweetness I need with the all problems I have here. Maybe next year I'll try them again if things work out this season.

    You should definitely grow the Ali baba Iranian watermelon. It’s considered a top variety much like the petite Gris de renee. Not that you can compeare a watermelon to a cantaloupe or a musk melon.

    Hello Ross , the uprights to your trellis- they appear to be metal star-pickets but timber at the top. Your video swept past too quickly for me to study them.
    Can you describe yours with some detail thanks. You have given me a solution to provide shade over the top of my potted blueberries in our very hot summers with the two rows above the height of my blueberries. Much appreciated.

    • @RossRaddi
      @RossRaddi  2 года назад

      The uprights are t posts. And the EMT poles are what goes on top through the PVC fittings.

    Ross, Been awhile. You have been putting out some gr8 vids but working in my own garden have not been able to catch up with them all. Was just wondering a couple days ago, what was going on with you and melons in 2022. Since my own melons have done well this season just had to watch and comment. This summer has been quite hot and on the dry side requiring me to irrigate melons via soaker hoses. Then a few days ago major rains began with more than 3" this week thus far. Melons have been good but not great in sweetness. Yields are very good. So please update us with the container grown moisture controlled experiment. In my case my melons are all horizontal in ground in absolute full blazing sun. My thinking is that moisture levels are more important than light levels? Randy/GA

    • @RossRaddi
      @RossRaddi  2 года назад

      I'm hoping that's the case, Randy. I can change the soil moisture. I can't suddenly give my plants more sunlight.

    Its hard to find good information on different varieties of melons. Im growing cantaloupes, canary and crenshaw melons this year out of Atlanta. The cantaloupes are ripe now and im still waiting on the other two varieties. Im interested to find out how your melons do and what they taste like and of course your recommendations when the season is over. What doesnt grow well is just as important as what does grow well.

    When is the best time to plant a potted Harrow Diamond Peach Tree? I am in Zone 5, south facing yard. Do I leave it potted till next spring or can it be planted in the fall?

    your really going over board on these melons lol. you know its not that complicated. look for the simpler solutions. our area doest produce melons that well. i got 1 variety that has been solid out of dozens and years of planting. it was a hybrid i cant find anymore so i saved the seeds. goodluck.

      my melons and cucumbers take a ton of water. i tried using earth boxes one time. i couldnt keep up with the water requirements. good fertility helps too. you have been struggling a bit on your in ground items. i would get a test to have a ruff idea of how your soil is.the small amount of organic fertilizer your using isnt going to raise your levels much.
