    the switch is actually a Q switch. not an active/passive switch. it changes the Tone from a standard tone knob (similar to one-it's actually a Low pass filter) to a Low Pass Filter with a boost in the Q which is a resonant peak. This gives it more of a distinct voice as you sweep through it and more interesting tone changes.

      do a search for filter based preamps--there a few different kinds out there

    I love the sound of the Spoiler, but what’s the difference between the active and passive modes?

      There is no passive mode on Alembic basses...they're all active. The guy doing the video is incorrect. The switch he's referring to is the Q switch.
