You're watching the first of 2 parts to this commentary on Yunchan's Liszt performance. What started out as a modest review ballooned into a video of... transcendental proportions. Editing this has been much more complicated than the Rach video, so - unlike Yunchan - I WILL take a break after Mazeppa before launching into Feux Follets and finishing the set. Thank you all for your patience and stay tuned!
I like your idea of introducing Yunchan to Liszt and his contemporaries. In fact, we can stop wondering about Yunchan's performances and interpretations of Liszt's work if we accept the fact that Liszt has been reborn as a Korean boy coming back to demonstrate to the world lost in digital noise on what true music sounds like and how it is played. Get it ;-)?
I didnt quite expect that you would so this! Cuz I know your channel is basically a teaching platform not review focused. I am so grateful that you did this for us though. I can't imagine how tricky it was to edit this video. Thank you Tonebase! Really appreciate that. First thing I push the 'like' button and then start.
Reinforcing your 'rock star' metaphor, when I heard Yunchan was going to be performing at Northwestern University outside of Chicago, I immediately called the box office to find out when tickets would become available. As though it were the very last concert of the Rolling Stones, I set my alarm for 1AM (I live in Brooklyn, so had to account for the time difference) when the box office opened and made an online purchase of a 3 performance series which included Yunchan (I will give away the other two tickets). Third row, keyboard side! In anticipation of this performance, which will include Liszt's 2 Legends of St. Francis and the Dante Sonata (none of which I am familiar with), I started listening to comparative performances (sometimes following the score). Among these was a video made 2 years ago of Yunchan playing the Dante (at 16!). What I have learned with all of this listening (and I too have fallen down the rabbit hole of searching for every available YL performance) is that in even the simplest phrase of a few spare notes, Yunchan delivers a master class in voicing, phrasing, color, character, drama. My only regret is that at almost 77, I will not live long enough to follow his career into its full maturity. But for now, I settle for daily doses of Yunchan. 10-22-2022 I wanted to add a few comments now that I have seen Yunchan Lim's performance at Northwestern on 10/20/2022 (flying from New York just for the day). At almost 77, I have been going to piano recitals for over 60 years and I have heard many of the greats - Horowitz, Rubenstein, Serkin. Pollini, DeLaRocha, Brendel et al. The only other performance I would place in the category of Lim's was hearing a solo recital of Maria Callas in 1974 who, with the power and drama of her voice, was able to communicate the majestic scope of opera without orchestra, other singers, costumes or sets. I have never seen a pianist combine with almost terrifying abandon truly explosive energy with feathery delicacy. There is a short simple passage of just a few notes in the middle of the Dante that he takes with two hands (most play it with one, it is so simple), but for me it was like discovering a black hole in the middle of the Universe. It is an example of how he can find in the smallest detail, unimaginable power. And as bonus, I met a lovely young Korean woman named Yun who had flown in from Virginia. We had an engaging conversation and she was kind enough to give me a CD of Lim's Dante performance (along with the Moonlight Sonata) that is only available in Korea. Thank you Yun, I enjoyed meeting you and hope we will meet again (maybe at the New York Philharmonic performance - to be announced - in May).
I envy you. How lucky you are to get the ticket with a good seat. I'm sure you'll have a long life and have a good health to travel around for Yunchan's concerts.
Awesome video! At my age I'm in Love with Yunchan! He is absolutely beautiful from Inside out! From the moment I'm home,he's on the screen. I must not just to listen to him, but see his big brown eyes, beautiful lips and sweet smile and of course gorgeous hair, his fellings, sound, thinking, concentration and passion, when he's playing, His playing is the last thing before I go to bed and the first thing in the morning is listen to him. I'm obsessed with him, but no regrets what soever!
+ He’s humble and respectful towards composers, his teacher, conductors, other musicians and audiences. He’s also very philosophical and mature. I’m in love with this amazing artist.
I enjoy your FB posts. Keep them coming! Incidentally, is there any particular pianist you were drawn to before Yunchan hit you over the head? ;) Maybe those Yunchan has cited as his own inspiration?
I've never liked the transcendentals much and really struggled to listen to them in one go until Yunchan. The comments are spot on, he declutters all the historical baggage of the Russian powerhouse bangers and finds the music again. Remarkable and I was hooked.
I can't wait to see part 2 already. I can now understand why you were late. If we can watch videos like this with quality and your effort, we don't really care how much it takes to video to come out. I really appreciate the effort you guys putting in a video. You deserves thousands of likes.
Thank you very much for creating such an incredible video that analyzes YunChan's playing of Liszt! It's so fun and educational to watch and I really enjoyed it! Can't wait for the 2nd part! Good Job! 😀😀😀
I think metal-head like Liszt print shirts was suit to you and this video well thanks to VCC, I found 2 precious ones. firstly Lim Yunchan , secondly this channel Tone Base. what a quality again. Ben, your sense of humor and music is so precious and adorable.
I remember his previous interview about his Transcendental etuide recital. Yunchan said that he studies for Liszt music, setting up "logic" first, and thinking about having an "orchestration" behind the piano. He also said that the more he tried do something technically, the less complete he experienced, so he threw it all away on the stage and only thought about music. He wants to leave only music on the stage without himself or the audience. He defined the value of the existence of music as 'sympathy' and 'thorth', and emphasized the importance of the player's 'design'. What a clever pianist!
Wow, such a compliment from Mr.Bernstein, he would be honored. He definitely has a bright future ahead and the potential to become the best of the next generation.
.... and I thought it was just us Koreans who were swooning in the most exaggerated terms over the magnificent Yunchan Lim! So glad to find out we're not the only ones combing the Internet for the smallest dose of Yunchan on a daily basis. Feeling quite relieved! 😌
I watched other pianists perform. The Mazeppa score editor said: "It is absolutely inadmissable to facilate fingering, as a contrary to Liszt's ideas." Yunchan's chosen fingering is also adopted by other pianists(Berezovsky, Trifonov) which is considered to be aimed at considering the melody. Haochen's performance is very special, but Yunchan made a different choice to improve the musical perfection of Mazeppa. Honestly, it's true that Yunchan's performance is much better if we listen to the overall performance. Anyway, thank you for uploading this video!
Yunchan's play is always 3 dimensional. I think he can out all the colors and different sound piano can produce making it plays several different instruments. I love the analysis and your ability to invite professionals in this and Rach 3 video. It brings me more clarity on what really makes the difference of Yunchan's play. Thank you so much for your hard work. Your video is as much enjoyable as I enjoy the music itself.
I enjoyed every minute of it! Just like the Rach 3 review, it helps a humble listener like me to understand better and appreciate his performance EVEN MORE!!! Can't wait for the part 2! But please take your time. I can't imagine how hard and time consuming it is to make a video like this. Thank you, Ben!!! 👏👏👏
You're leaving us on such a cliffhanger! We need part two! 😅 THANK YOU for this amazing content man. I've never enjoyed classical music content as much as yours.
I really like this video❤ my husband recommended me to watch it, they were talking about Yunchan as exactly same as you. I agreed about his tone as colour and transparency etc.. I was not a Liszt mania, but now I’m a absolutely Liszt… Yunchan mania 😊 I also liked the story of the Romantic era, so imaginable!! I want to listen that he plays with a Bechstein 🎹
Oh boy oh boy oh boy!! I haven't watched this one yet but I know I will be watching it at least 20 times (conservative estimate) like I did the Rach 3 review video... ! ☺️
Your review of yoon chan Lim's performance is so high quality that I am surprised to see it. I'm especially surprised to find his interview in the corner. Maybe you're a perfectionist. I look forward to more reviews of yoon chan Lim's performance.
두번째 파트 기다리겠습니다!!!❤️ +) I watched other pianists perform. I must be watching this a second time because there were some scenes of naked reminders of someone spinning around in a chair. Anyway, so much good information to take in about notes and the different ways to phrase them. I had no idea everyone played them so differently. I can't really discern all that without the help of tonebase breaking it all down. He does it in such a fun way it makes you want to listen & watch. Thanks tonebase, I like all the Yunchan Lim worshipping videos. He deserves it. Oh....and thanks for all the history lessons about the composers and what they were thinking at the time. I love the history surrounding the music.
As for the hair part, I am not sure if Ben understood the Korean interview correctly... Yunchan wanted to get his hair done similar to the Liszt, but it wasn’t easy as his hair is naturally wavy and his friends and parents advised against it.. At the end Yunchan had to settle with only straightening his hair. 🤣💜🎹
@@kcho777 Reading the translation, I'm pretty sure Ben understood alrighty. Yet I find the Beatles/BTS hair comparison more hilarious. Funny and spot on. 😅
2:14 Glad he didn’t play Bach…. 23:35 NOT tired at all. Just keep doing it please. 27:45 My eyes…!!! My eyes….!!!!! 29:45 In one intetview, 윤찬 himself told this was one of the most diffifult moments.

At 5:30 -- Thanks for mentioning Asiya Korepanova will perform all 24 Liszt Etudes in New York's Merkin Hall on 21 Feb 2023 -- I just bought a balcony ticket.
This video is so good~ from the humour to seiousness. 😊) 👍🏻👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Excelent! "Oh, she's a singer..." When do we get part 2? Jorge Bolet's Mazeppa is the one i clearly ear the fingering 4/2 by Liszt. He plays it a lot slower but with a very clear galop pace. My favourite Transcendental set is still Arrau's, but this one played live is mindblowing. Vadim Kholodenko also played 11 of the 12 etudes in the Van Cliburn competition. Could also be a good comparison point of interpretation in terms of a live perfomance. Keep up with this videos!
I've been a tone base premium user in guitar for years, and have gotten a lot from the videos I've seen in the guitar library. But these are really really fascinating and enlightening stories. Thank you for all of these! Great videos and especially also though interviews at juilliard in practice rooms and with Hamlin
Kind of reminds me of the (well-deserved) hype around Cateen/Hayato Sumino during the Chopin Comp. Drawing more viewers to classical piano and emulating the hair of great composers! I'm all for it - and the playing of course! 😁
Thank you for giving us/me so much insight into great masterworks as well as paying tribute to Yunchan Lim, perhaps a 1 in a 100 Million pianistic talent. This guy is gigantic - and this at the age of 17… I am looking forward to part 2 of your analysis. Perhaps you find time (in one of your future features) to compare Yunchan Lim to another „rising star“ (imho) of the same caliber - namely Bruce Xiaou Liu (Winner of the Warsaw Chopin Competition 2021). Both of these pianists share some similarities (extreme virtuosity paired with deep musicality) - and both will be part of the pianistic olymp of the coming decades. (Liu only being 8 years older than Lim) Perhaps they find ways to cross each others lines…. and then we will not only have the 3 Tenors - But the 2 Pianists (Lim + Liu) - what a nice 😂 name-game 😊. But apart from this - I am hoping for any new insight and analysis from your side- chapeau!
at 3:25 in this excellent piece, we have a clip of "Impromptu" showing actor Julian Sands who, as of 21JAN23, is missing somewhere in the mountains of California ... let us hope for the safe return of this talented actor
What a GREEAAAT VIDEO!!! Many things i love in one place - Cliburn, Yunchan, Liszt, Tonebase analysis, great interviews and references, great editing and clips!! It all works!!!
Thank you Ben, finally delivering this wonderful video. It's much more worth waiting. I can't imagine how much time and efforts you pour into making this video. I really appreciated. (esp your selfless decision to take role as naked Mazeppa to recreate the historic event ,only for the viewer's deeper understanding of the piece.) Dyeing to watch Part 2 but you deserve a break, I will patiently wait till you drop the part 2. Thank you again and I like your sense of humor & dry wit which was hilarious.
A brilliant, informative, and hilarious video - wonderful. Thanks so much. Y-L has really made these pieces an epic, but with everything else in there too. I hope he puts them on disc - or the Cliburn CD is of this. But they'll need a little box set - his rounds were all so good. What a talent to behold.
@@jennyjeong9333 I think he's referring to the one in San Jose. It technically sold out in 1 minute and 20 seconds...at least that's what the guy in charge of the box office told me when I emailed him after I was unable to get a single ticket though I was online for 30 minutes before they went on sale. Others grabbed the seats much quicker than my fingers could click on them. It felt like I was competing against concert pianists on their computer keyboards. 😂
Being a BTS fan and a classical music fan / listener, I do feel like he is right now the "BTS" per say of the classical world!! I read that his San Jose concert was sold out in 10 seconds. Which is what happens with many BTS concerts as well. Gone in seconds. So when you did that note at the beginning it really made me laugh! Great video!!!

For a split second I thought the one naked in front of the piano was you LOL. Thank you, Ben! I love your videos. I can't wait for Part 2!
Your review of yoon chan Lim's performance is so high quality that I am surprised to see it. I'm especially surprised to find his interview in the corner. Maybe you're a perfectionist. I look forward to more reviews of yoon chan Lim's performance.
BTW Yunchan Lim is the way he wants, rather than yoon chan Lim. Have a good day! ❤️🎹
+) I watched other pianists perform. Anyway, thank you for uploading this video!
great job! love your video!

Love the sense of humor. Especially the hair part.. 😅 Never enjoyed more classical-music-related clips other than this. Thanks, Ben!
Tonebase is the best. You worked hard to make it (especially your acting is good). I look forward to the second part. Where can I get that t-shirt?
2:14 Glad he didn’t play Bach….
23:35 NOT tired at all. Just keep doing it please.
27:45 My eyes…!!! My eyes….!!!!!
29:45 In one intetview, 윤찬 himself told this was one of the most diffifult moments.

Yes , you Yoon-chanLim, deserves without delay a blue-ray (or even 4k) special edition produced with professionalism and care.. Great profits quickly turn it from worldwide. I hope he soon record the remarkable Sonate in B minor from Liszt, the stupend and unique Hamerklavier Sonate from Beethoven , the piu bello 2nd Piano Concert from Rachmaninoff, and my " Awakening to Life" special piano solo composition that only lasts a minute but means a full lifetime. - Yan Ayrton , ein junge klassicher Komponist

This video made me understand why I was so moved by this performance.
I appreciate it!!!
At 5:30 -- Thanks for mentioning Asiya Korepanova will perform all 24 Liszt Etudes in New York's Merkin Hall on 21 Feb 2023 -- I just bought a balcony ticket.
give us part 2 please...
thank uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu❤
loved the beginning lol
plz ~~~~hurry up~~part 2 give us~~~ i m no waiting ㅠㅠ ~~🥰😍🤩😘
Wow!Wow! WOW!
PART2 PLZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ
Nice

Sorry but BTS dancing to Mazeppa just made me dead 💀
“Oh ok, she’s a singer.” OMG
Loving the Thin Liszt-y shirt lol
Auténtico genio!!! 😮❤❤🎉
Where is Part 2 I wait 3 month now
Hello, would you please let us know clearly whether there will be a second part? When will it be released?
When are you going to post part 2? Still waiting.
This is part 2, getting a whole lot more views than this one. ruclips.net/video/ZFQlVVJTO_U/видео.html
I'm waiting for part 3!!!
at 3:25 in this excellent piece, we have a clip of "Impromptu" showing actor Julian Sands who, as of 21JAN23, is missing somewhere in the mountains of California ... let us hope for the safe return of this talented actor
27:39 I had to check that twice if that was actually you. smh lol.
@@tonebasePiano wow😮 you speaks korean!
l’m out here wondering where I can get that Liszt t-shirt 🤔
"Same haircut"
"She goes to Juilliard?...Why isn't she practicing...oh, she's a singer!"
Keep up the amazing funny, Ben!
I saw a video of him on RUclips in July and was strangely drawn to him. Next video..Next video..I can't get out of the swamp.what's the reason?🤣
I know what you mean and I am 66 😮
I really do like your videos. Thks !Perhaps could you continue with subtitles ? Me, poor french singer…(find me in RUclips 😉)
We love you!!
Insightful analysis as usual. Keep it up! 👏👏 loved the funny bits 🤣
His concert yesterday sold out in 10 seconds.
😭😭😭😭😭
When and where is the concert?
@@jennyjeong9333 I think he's referring to the one in San Jose. It technically sold out in 1 minute and 20 seconds...at least that's what the guy in charge of the box office told me when I emailed him after I was unable to get a single ticket though I was online for 30 minutes before they went on sale. Others grabbed the seats much quicker than my fingers could click on them. It felt like I was competing against concert pianists on their computer keyboards. 😂
@@jennyjeong9333 San Jose, CA 9/18/2022.
@@yyoo No doubt lol
Being a BTS fan and a classical music fan / listener, I do feel like he is right now the "BTS" per say of the classical world!!
I read that his San Jose concert was sold out in 10 seconds. Which is what happens with many BTS concerts as well. Gone in seconds. So when you did that note at the beginning it really made me laugh! Great video!!!
💜🎹💟
I watched San Jose recital in paid live streaming and it was amazing!
BORAHEA ARMY ~💜
I have been a fan of BTS since 2016, and take my words; the talent level of individual BTS members is nowhere near Yunchan's.

Thanks to Yunchan, I happen to know the 'Tonebase" channel, and I really appreciate your content! Your content is fun, educational, and even spiritual! 😀
Wow you searched a lot for Yunchan lim's interveiw even given in Korean only. Surprised
