It's rare to hear a recording where EVERYONE in the ensemble is so spot on. You can tell they were having a ball doing this.
Yeah, I heard this not knowing who was playing (it was in a playlist), and thought,"Huh. Sure sounds like Chet Baker.".... then the sax started playing and I thought "That's GOT to be Desmond", and halfway through, was thinking "but who's that kick-ass drummer??" I usually find this to be a boring tune but there isn't a dull moment here.
Not that rare
totally not that rare
Just type "Kind of Blue" in the search box.
Not rare at all in the classic jazz days imo. Any of the legendary groups-Miles davis’ groups, coltrane’s quartet we’re spot on way more often than not
Everyone's like the trumpet/sax are great and I'm sitting here thinking the drumming is out of the world
Sanjak Pitakrat for real. the drummer has the soul of an entire planet.
I swear the snare is perfect. This guy was in his pocketttttttttt the whole song ahhhh.
Same. Just love how Steve Gadd is riding that Ride Cymbal
I immediately loved the drumming but didn't know who it was. When I found out it's Gadd it made perfect sense.
Everyone is complimenting the drumming, What the fuck are you talking about?
shoutout to all the young people listening to this kickass music
Ayyyeee here for Paul Desmond 🎷
Part of the Jazz Repetoire. We have to have it under our belt!!

I appreciate this as a 14 year old cringe boi. Although I do very much enjoy older 1920s, 1930s, and 1960s music.
22 years of age and loving this! cheers
My favorite recording of Autumn Leaves. Huge fan of all of these musicians. The drums give this recording such drive and authority.
Trey Davis this was one of my first transcription projects on sax. (I’m a clarinet player, and I double on jazz ensembles) it was so much fun and worthwhile. Great way to spend my quarantine.
Steve Gadd’s impact!🥁🥁🥁
Que musica!!!!!!!¡
Uno de mis favotritos
Mine too!
I often call Autumn Leaves in F minor because of this recording.
Wow, Autumn Leaves has me sitting here forgetting about the whole corona virus for 7 minutes and how effective music can be.
Well I was reading the comments while listening and although I forgot about corona this reminded me of it lol

Corona who?
I do not care what anybody says about this rendition of Autumn Leaves. My comment is this: This is what jazz is all about. Absolutely beautiful!
yes indeed, Jazzla9. For sure.
The crazy thing is jazz isn't about anyting... It's all about improvised years of studying how not to play it
Yeah... 100 others think so too ;)

Holy mackerel!!
What a lineup.
This is like a super-group of jazz players.
Paul Desmond had absolutely the coolest sound ever.

You can hear the strong influence of Elvin Jones in Gadd's playing. Man, he's killing it here. Everyone's killing it here.
murders row for sure
a massacre
Quote from Chet, "The best drumming is no drumming."
Good observation.
Jonesian triplets for sure.
THIS DRUMMING IS AMAZING! My god, Steve Gadd, how?!
I listen in awe.
bert Winkler ======awsome ,, one of the best drumming ive heard in a long time ,, tasty as hell ,, really juggles those tubs .. and im a sax player enjoying this guys fills etc...

+Robert Winkler Yes, the same Steve Gadd that regularly performs with Mr Eric Clapton
Son of Point G, father of Kenny G, brother the Bee G´s............................ a stupid joke sorry
+Robert Winkler , seconded, what amazes me is how he can insert a rock style in this jazz classic and make it fit perfectly with what the musicians are doing. How does he do it?
+cuerpoeperra Don't forget the boyz....G, Dog and G, Diddy. If you can't make a stupid joke in life...well G, Damn.
I was feeling like crap. Then I clicked on this, and it brought my mood and feeling back up high!
This song always gives me the feel of a rainy day and a cup of coffee
Originally available on Chet's 1974 album, "She Was Too Good To Me." An incredible album, start to finish.
The whole rhythm section is absolutely unreal oh my god
Love how the bass playing style changes when Desmond's solo begins and then falls back into the groove.
While I admire anyone who dares to play jazz, from the beginning to the avante-garde of today, I have always favored the sounds of Chet and Paul, and others like them.
The smooth, clean, and clear sounds appeal the most, and I'm a guitar player!
I’m a flute player... that drummer is killin it
Chet Baker's solo: 0:54

Your comment is spot on!
I'm sad to admit I didn't discover Chet Baker until recently. I love this period in jazz and this man is simply incredible.
❤
This swings hard, man! The Masters at work. Love it!
Respect for your variety in musical tastes Sir!!!

Really digging this new place of RUclips man.
With the Steve Gadd magic happening , it lifts this piece to a beautiful place. Even though this standard has been played many times over.
yes, indeed! I love it too!
Desmond had such a beautiful tone.
i have never heard the drums be played like this. it’s beautiful.
I heard this group in person in NYC. Chet and Paul have always been two of my all time jazz favorite musicians.
Chet and Paul: two of the most lyrical jazzmen I love,
Chet is among my favorite all time greatest male jazz Vocalists .... and HE IS A STELLAR TRUMPETEER
@1:43 is the most incredible break I've ever heard. Bass player and drums LOCKED IN, then straight back into a bebop feel
I was fortunate to meet Chet Baker in Las Vegas at the Four Queens just before he passed. On his breaks he came to talk to our little table of four. We asked for an autograph but he adamantly refused. There was a total of about fifteen people in the audience. He swung the Four Queen’s hand down to the table that night. What a gentle soul, and a class musician. Great band too.
Interesting life story of Chet!
You lucky bastard!
Hay, we would get off of our little gigs and rush down to the Four Queens every Monday night. '85, '86, '87, '88, '89. We saw Mongo Santamaria (Nobody in the audience, just us chickens). Bill Watrous, Jack Sheldon... Many others. Then off to Benny Binion's Horseshoe for the steak, Baked Potato, Salad, Bread and Drink for 99 cents. Them's was the days.
His death was of a misterious nature so it be said so it be written so it be true..Maybe?
that harmony was played in God level
i am here because of „jazz for two“ it’s sad and beautiful...
same lol
same lmao
oh so i got the right song thank god, same

The bass at 2:39 gets me every time
Holy shit. Incredible
"oo wee oo wee, oo wee oo wee"

Chet was often a very under-rated trumpeter. He could play beautiful solos, and extemporize imaginatively.
I low key steal all his licks and people be like where is this coming from I'm just like Chet Baker look him up
he was overrated, and miles got the short end
You miss ther point. He wass a 'lyrical' trumpeter, and smooth. Miles got in a rut because of his drug-addled brain. Neither were of the technical skill and inventive flar of say Sandoval or Saunders, both of whom were among the greatest in the history of jazz.
You miss the point. Chet Baker was literally overrated in Downbeat magazine over Miles even though he mimicked Miles' style.
"Miss the point"? It;s dummies like you who don't even have a point. Chet was appreciated by his fellow musicians. Better than average, The top guys today leave Chet and Miles w
ay behind. You are a mediocre music fan of little to offer where intelligence is concerned.
Steve Gadd absolutely kills it on this track!
I love Chet Baker.I can’t get enough of them.I think so greatest jazz musicians.❤🎉
Paul Desmond’s tone=the definition of smooth!
Steve Gadd was on this?! I can't even...
He's like the Vodka of percussion - mixes well with just about anything.
Hungarians are drinking wine. Red Bulls wine. And win soccer very first against the Britons. Kosma's evergreen is always at hand.. :)
Nice one
spot on, brother, you got Steve Gadd perfectly defined! :D

Incredible sound ... Chet Baker and Paul Desmond together. Amazing combination.
So many amazing musicians on one song. Classic jazz all around.
I have heard hundreds of different "Autumn Leaves" by different musicians and this is for sure and for me one of the best of its recordings. People tend to talk only about the collaboration by Chet and Paul Desmond but I like also Hubert Laws' flute and Bob James' electric piano. Very beautiful and still "modern interpretation" of "Autumn Leaves".
Calling this song a master piece is an understatement
This is truly a phenomenal group of musicians.
Is it crazy that I'm always brought to tears just from listening to this song? It just makes me so happy for some reason.
Really interesting version. The feel is very dominated by Gadd, took me a while to relax into it. No one else would have played it like that. Swings in an unusual way. Carter drives it beautifully.
You could put lyrics to about anything Paul Desmond ever played.... improvs, no matter the tempo...runs, riffs arpeggios. There is a softness, subtlety, an ethereal understatement about it all.
Absolute class 🙂🙃
I think this just may be my most favorite recording of all time. The way the comp section grooves and how they just go in on Chet's second chorus solo. Maaaan.
Such beauty.
Baker's trumpet playing. The logic of his melodic concepts.
Agree with others: Masters at work.
I have this album in my collection. It’s one of the greatest pieces of jazz music I’ve ever heard. The musicians are out of this world. When I get on the boat late at night, on the quiet waters of the Gulf, the music takes me to another dimension. It’s transformative.
In Steve Gadd's hands, the drums aren't just a rhythm instrument. They're a MUSICAL instrument!
He's one of the best of all time.
Rythm is the backbone of music, Without it you have only a suite of notes that means nothing.
@@MrMOGHammer well no
@@diegoparra8178 literally if you lack rhythm you'll just have incoherent lines. You can't have a melody a without rhythm.
Jazz and death metal drumming are just the best
I love Steve Gadd, but for this tune he is WAY too busy
great drumming that enhanced swinging choruses . Fabulous 'inter-action" !
+Jean-Luc Bersou I agree.
Steve Gadd is amazing. I love how he throws those triplets in like a machine gun. I could listen to Baker, Desmond, and Gadd forever!
No es música de otro tiempo, es de todos los tiempos.
Muchas gracias

Interprétation exceptionnelle par des virtuoses de la trompette et saxophone. Vraiment sublime comme interprétation instrumentale.
DC Young's comments ring true. Really appreciated. Paul Desmond was one of a kind. If Debussy was born 100 years later and could blow, it might have been Paul. How lyrical and yet, such dry wit and humor. Much thanks.
How man!!! Amazing! This swings! Drummer! Flute! Desmond! Bob! Carter! Chet is superb!!!!!
Honestly props to Steve Gadd, think it's been just a minute of the whole piece and I'm already amazed by his drumming
Brilliant all around, but that drumming.....words almost can't describe, it's infectious.
2:33 The way Paul Desmond takes over can only be called ever so smoooooooooooooooothththththly.
Steve Gadd is just a legend. Doesnt get better than him... Props to everyone who is a part of this, though!
Magic. Just magic.
Hehe 😼👀
What a Bob James improvisation. Really deep and beauty. This song makes me cry...
I used to love listening this music on a $100,000 stereo audio setup in Pasadena, CA on a famous audio store called Sound Factor in the 90s. Beautiful music. Of course nothing compares to listening to a live performance where you get every nuance, every bit of music produced by these wonderful players.
fits Baker and Desmond's styles perfectly
Shout out to the piano player, Bob James. I'm not normally a big fan of jazz, but this is amazing!
La primera vez a la escuche fue en un restauran, y con buen oído que la vida me dio la conseguí al fin hace unos años y aún la sigo escuchando es una gran oportunidad que nos da la vida al escuchar esto.

I admire a lot of sax players, but for me, enjoyable listening - Paul Desmond, man! It is just a very relaxing style - sit back and have an adult beverage. I like a lot of aggressive players too but I find with Paul - even people that aren't big jazz fans can get into it. And that's not to say that he's playing Jazz for Beginners. It's his personality and humor that come through his instrument. Gone too soon. Reading stories about him and what he wrote himself - too bad he never finished that book. I really love his odd sense of humor. Cover of his Summertime album - all icicles! One of the original "characters" of jazz.
His solo on "A Train" with Brubeck, which is on one of the Columbia collections, is an example of his beautiful melodic phrasing. Technically flawless, playful but also musically sophisticated--the guy was a master.

Desmond was also quite the ladies man, too. Chicks dug him and he, them! You can never judge a book by it's cover huh
In HS my band teacher said I had amazing tone and asked what I did to sound so nice. "I imagine how Paul Desmond would sound playing this and try to sound like him."
Two of the best, swinging yet humble genius improvisers
So much of what most modern Tunes lack, a history of history, hitting all the gears, grinding not so much, flowing like a river, just more great stuff!
I ❤️ this song so much...And this rendition is pure fucking P-E-R-F-E-C-T-I-O-N...Chet is on fire and Bob James on keys...W-O-W!!!
That smooth, easy, west coast jazz sound! I don't think it was called west coast jazz yet though. But it wasn't bebop.
+David Jones it's called Hard bop
kausmo tumynski it’s hard bop, it’s not your typical hard bop though
Bebop was too random. This was more focused on cool jazz.
This is a great piece of music by some of the greatest jazz musicians. A fast, smooth, and pulsating rhythm. Thanks Chet, Paul, Ron, Steve, Bob. Hubert...You are forever, jazz immortals.
😮wat is dit toch ongelooflijk mooi😊dit is ❤
A classic
This is really my cup of tea - an uptempo , interestingly arranged and beautifully performed rendition of a song you've heard a gazillion times ( maybe because it's a classic ?)
Only now I m begining to appreciate this kind of music..thank you audrey. .
I pray you are young, nevertheless, you will be ever grateful of the alignment of the moments
No I m not young..grew up in the surroundings of rock reggae new wave modern pop jazz n rythm n blues soul discos ..those sort of stuff...but thanks to youtube I discovered west coast jazz. ..even lookin into the likes of duke ellington. ....I luvvvvv his take the A train ...great American music I must say so myself
It's so loose, so 'matter of factual' and yet so lyrical. Awsome band achievement. One of the freshest renditions of one of the most performed jazz standards ever. Superb!
Everyone is so pinpoint on point in this recording it blows my mind. I think that is why it is so fun to listen to.
Taehyung tiene buenísimos gustos musicales
I loved this album, literally wore it out. It was Desmond's last recording before he died. Thanks for the upload!
damn 6 years
Chet and Paul together are a beautiful mix. And the rest of the group are masterful. What a wonderful uplifting performance. Music of the gods!
S. Gadd is just on another planet but so tight with the rest of the band. AMAZING!
Best drummer I ever heard, goodness gracious 🥁💛
Oh man, this trumpet solo is pure gold!
And the sax, too!
Hat off to all the musicians playing on this recording. Bob James' keyboard in particular is mesmerising. This must be the best version I've ever heard of this song.
got my introduction to "modern, progressive jazz" listening to Symphony Sid, a well known DJ in Boston in the late 40's and early 50's.the man knew everyone who was in the jazz scene. this set bring back great memories. I was about 10 years old listening to this music. Sid also had a gospel music program on just before he came on with the jazz program. learned to appreciate all kinds of music at a young age.

Such a beautiful one. Every one of them is amazing. Love from a small Himalayan country, Nepal
Steve gadd. One of the best and most versatile drummers out there. He plays rock. He plays blues. He play funk. He plays it all
The way he builds up those sections is stupendous.
Ron Carter still with us. Thank God
Got to play with Ron Carter in concert on a few tunes. Dang what a player
Sergio Larios was my band and music teacher. He was an amazing person and we got to play in many places. He's really well acquainted with Ron Carter. So much so, that he calls him his dad and such, since he was his former student. I've met Ron Carter in person and I've even gotten to perform a happy birthday song for him.
It's really great, meeting amazing musicians and performing with them.
es un genio...
Better than ever !
Fantastic! The musicianship is out of this world 😎
I remember vividly my Tatay who plays as cool as Paul Desmond on the alto sax and even tenor sax. This piece was played by the Romy Posadas Band when they had an 8-year stint at Hyatt Hongkong. They were a sensation then in the 70's. Musicians emulated that group.
Damn how much more monstrous can you get, these players will live forever!
wooo!!!! those guys sounded so free in the song. Beautiful
Ron funks it up man
All cooked in their own way. The rhythm section I could listen to often.
Superb! That chet of Baker & Desmond to gether with the other players in the Orchestra sounds wonderful & I like it very much. Malka Smith 15/06/2019
What a great line up and performance.
They're all so good at what they do. But Steve Gadd just absolutely kills it! I could listen to this on repeat for hours! ...wait i already do. And the flute is so tasteful!
That drum bit at 1:24 keeps me up at night. It’s so good.
Bob James just really playing those chords that give you that autumn vibe.
I have gone back and forth with this album for decades. In some ways the combination of musicians is just weird and sometimes it is pure genius. Old school cool meets modern polished CTI. And then Paul Desmond!!! Then Gadd!!!
This is tops. Love it when two legends can come together and create.
Those dudes Rock. Back in the day, I can picture my parents on the ballroom floor swinging and bopping to this one. Very influential to present day pop music. Drummer was on a Roll-- excellent. ❤
