Hi there, thanks for the video! I am trying to fit this entire assembly into a smaller project, powered with a LiPo battery. Do you have any tips on how to achieve the same (or similar) power? Thank you
@@kaptanmike1957 It's complicated. If you don't mind a massive temperature spike after each "shot" then yeah, quite achievable. Making it work for your use case is the hard part.
Nice project, man! Congratulations! One question: I used to power solenoids directly with a DC charger. I triggered it from the microcontroller using a transistor. My intetion is building something like an inpact piston, but I want to be able to finely tune the speed/impact force, perhaps incorporate a control system to automatically do this. But I never really quite understood how to control the strength/speed of the solenoid in this setup with a DC charger. I thought I was restrained to use the voltage specified on the solenoid (usually either 12V or 24V on those I bought from AliExpress), so I tried changing the charger amperage, but with very little effect on the speed/impact force. By watching your video, perhaps there is something I am missing in this problem. What is the importance of the capacitor in this circuit? Is it because we can activate the solenoid with a higher voltage burst? Do you have any ideas what component I could use to control the speed/impact force of the solenoid?
Hey mate, your videos have been very helpful so thank you very much. I have a question though: would the kicker kick harder when I use a supercapacitor of 2.7V and 500F?
Hello, thank you buddy. For the question, the answer is most probably no. Because using that supercapacitor, the maximum voltage that it can contain is only 2.7V even we charge it using 390V capacitor charger. Large capacity alone will not help to push the kicker. For example I once have tried to drive the kicker using low voltage like 20V but with 2 units of 3300uF (giving it 6600uF), the result is the kicker kicked softly. I also have tried the other way, using 390V but with a small capacity like 100uF, the result is the same, the kicker kicked very softly. So for the conclusion, you need a high value of voltage together with a large value of capacity to make the kicker kick hard.
@@nudgeme4844 Thanks man for your fast and clear explanation! In some other comment you left on a similar question, you suggested using 2 parallel capacitors to boost the kicker, is it then still possible to charge it with the same capacitor-charger?
Yes, that's what I did in the video above. I used a single ZVS capacitor charger to charge the capacitors that were connected parallel to each other, and triggered them using just one limit switch.
Love it I love it. Just what I was looking for. You must be pushing the boundaries by going as high as 400 Volts on a 12 Volt Solenoid. That is more than thirty times more than designed for! BUT I love how powerful it is👿. Yea.
Working principle of a coil gun. But I thing the relais is burned out quite fast. The solenoid is also not build for this kind of hammering force and will eventually destroy itself. The coil is not powered for a long time so should be able to handle The higher current. So yes its possible. But not a good idea.
Is it possible that our solenoid didn't work well caused by the bad coil? If it's possible,Will you suggest me the best coil or the best way to make the best coil for solenoid?

Hi... What type of relay can be used? Please provide me the part name.. I used SRD-05DC type relay but it was blown off... The solenoid coil resistance is 2ohms and the voltage is 300V.. the relay is not supported 150A inrush current for 5msec...
It depends on 2 main things, first the level of voltage (here I used 390V), and second the value of capacitance (I normally use a pair of 3000uF capacitors parallely connected to each other if I use larger solenoid kicker).
As long as you guard the solenoid chassis with proper bracket, it will survive the impact damage for a long time. I have used the bigger solenoid coil and plunger, with higher capacitor capacity, it was able to kick normal soccer ball pretty forceful, and the solenoid chassis fell apart several times. After I reinforced the chassis by welding additional brackets, it turned out to be stronger in construction. The coil itself didn't experience any burn out however. It is because the current supplied is kind of low despite the large voltage used in the circuit.
@nudgeme4844 I see very interesting, so even though the coil is rated at 12v the current is not increasing by much and because its such a short burst it doesn't appear to adversely affect the coil. I might give it a go! Thankyou!
No, that's not right. I have triggered the relay (you need to use car relay as shown in the video for this one) using Arduino and it worked like charm. But to be safe for the microcontoller, the use of RC snubber module is recommended.
