I was cheering even now, while watching it as if it was live stream. The memory of this quakecon is now inprinted in my soul, so incredible to witness.
Games like this are not just another game you play. It is a game that you define yourself with and to get this good, it must become a part of your life, but it's ok because Quake is one of the most beautiful games in terms of of its purity and just plain fun. Just play a lot and you will notice you hit shots you never thought you could.
Great video, really shows what Quake is all about! and you've done well with adding a gameplay summary under the video, it helps people who haven't tried the game to appreciate its complexity. Sometimes I explain those little details to people when showing them a match and they seem to understand a lot better what makes Quake the game it is. Maybe you could add that "Players have no item respawn timers while playing, this is only for spectators to see. Players must time items on their head" :D.
People are still playing Quake 1, which was released in 1997 originally :) Of course the engines have become better through open sourcing them, but this tells something about the excellence of the game mechanics in the Quake 1 and 3 (which Live is based on).
That might be the case of LoL, but in DotA you more than often have more than 4 spells, the most advanced hero in the game at this time usually have 14 spells (with the standard active items) along with 5 passive spells (that you have to click). Did you watch the finals of The International 3? Look at the last ten minutes of the last game in the finals between Na'Vi and Alliance! That's some sick fighting and mindblowing decision making!
Two hours huh? I have a challenge for you then. Join Quakelive (free) find the best duelers in your area, play them, and then tell me if its still easy to learn. Play for a week, then reply back here with you profile / stats. Quake is easy to pickup I guess, extremely hard to master. I guarantee you if you play top tier duelers. You will lose 50-0 or worse at least a few times. This is the pinnacle of competitive gaming, and if it weren't for Quake, online gaming as we know it wouldn't exist.
The thing with "picking it up" is about the player base. When people try something new they need to experience success to carry them forward. In CoD, or inf LoL, you will easily and quickly get to play versus people around your own level, which balances your experiences of succes and failure. Trying to "pick up" quakelive dueling is just different on this point. You will get demolished and you wont get to "average" nearly as fast as in the two other games. What's best? Personal preference.
I like games like LoL and SC2. But this Quake Live, takes all that strategy from those games and puts it in a fps. The combination it's incredibly good. Adding the fact that it's free and takes just 10minutes to download. Is really worth a try... because it's unique. And once again try to not judge it from outside, thats what I've been doing for months before trying it, then I realized I was totaly wrong.
i think he refers to the mechanical skill ceiling in DOTA which is relatively low coupled with the knowledge based skill differentiation. quake has extremely simple mechanics - yet there is a just as big, if not bigger skill slope. thats not to say that dota requires alot of skill and knowledge, its just that they derive from slightly different things.
Vodkagarbage You can't waltz into ANY of the esports titles and suddenly become good, FPS or not. It doesn't matter because there's no skill cap to any of the games, so these people are constantly getting better. You pick up on very unapparent aspects as you put in time with the game, as with any esports title. As long as there's no skill cap, any game will be just as hard competitively. My two cents six months later ;)
It's very easy to learn the theory, the basics. To play minimally well is impossible. I've been playing for more than 10 years, and get regularly destroyed online.
I agree with that, FPS's in general are easy to learn. However, that doesn't mean they are easy to master. As with games like LoL or Dota, it takes hours of practice to learn all the little mechanics that go into being a pro at a game. Players like rapha and evil have been playing for years, playing at the highest level of play, fine tuning their mechanics. They still make mistakes like other gamers, so they keep working hard to perfect their abilities.
I won't comment on Quake's e-sports potential, but DotA 2 is on the lower end of the skill-intensive spectrum. DotA/LoL are too formulaic, and the equation is very easy. If you kill a player, you either push for the other tower or take a neutral boss. That about sums up 80% of the game, the rest is buying items and team fights. Fights are over in a matter of seconds while most action is farming. Four abilities doesn't leave much room for skill either, you have a 25% chance of using the right one
how about you try getting those accuracies on rapha :P doubt you could even have time to fire. Accuracy is most affected by the person you are playing, not by your play.
Compare it to a common sport like tennis. A ball and a racket, how hard can that be? Its easy in its basics, but to play like Federer you will need some years of training and a huge dose of talent and skill.
You could make the same blanket statement for every game ever. "It's a generic [x] game, just pick it up and get into the action! You don't necessarily *have* to learn [y] to play!" I think you vastly underestimate the learning curve of this "simple fps". It's the one of the mothers of competitive gaming in general and as such the amount of knowledge and training required to be able to compete even on the most basic of levels nowadays is extremely high. Modern MoBAs are laughable in comparison.
Newb spotted. As a duel player, he's right. Jump around for two hours, time power ups, you're set. All it takes to learn a map. Now, maintaining map control ability? Life time of progres.
Yeah indeed. The game in itself is freakin awesome! But a new one with better graphics and some new maps. Simply do it like Valve did with Dota2, keep the simple Dota feel and heroes but upgrade graphics ALOT!
See, it's still an FPS and anybody can pick it up, even though these professional players have been playing for years, the game is still simple to learn. You don't need to do all of that in order to play well, sure it's hard to play this well, but it still doesn't take a while to get decent and learn alot about the game.
It's still an FPS, sure you can run around fast and jump around, yes there are skillshot weapons, but it doesn't change the fact that it's not hard to learn and that anybody can pick it up, you don't have to play for 9 years to be good. It doesn't take that long, where as with some games it does, you can't pick up Dota easily with only 50 hours of play, you still don't know most of the mechanics. I have over 800 hours now and there's still alot I don't know. Quake is easy to learn, though.
Yes, but what I'm saying is that it doesn't take years to learn, it doesn't take years to master, either. Because there's not as much to learn as there is in Dota or any other moba game. It's like people who claim to be professional at Call of Duty, I understand Quake is hard to master and be 'pro' at, but it's not hard to learn all of the guns and the maps.
Yep, they only want popular bullshit, not older awesome, fun to watch games... Personally i think this is way more exciting than watching click-spam and small units walking around the map :| Well at least Quake 3 (Live) is still active and has people playing it all the time.
It looks boring because the truest of e-sports (well, sports in general) are not about flashing colors or crazy environments. Quake, Counter-Strike, StarCraft.. all some of the biggest names in e-sports and they are games without all the extra doo-dads that new ones try to push on us.
You know, respecting what other people like to play could be a benefit to both you and others; I play both, and I find them both enjoyable to play. So...stop being a butthurt fanboy.
nothing will bring it back. Media destroys the youth with processes that require less and less brain activity. quake is waaay out of the league of todays society. Brin any good quaker to COD and 99% of CODers will be annihilated. Bring the BEST COD PLAYER IN THE WORLD to quake, he won't stand a chance against someone who plays for few months this game.
The best FPS of all time. The only game that I know that can display a gamers TRUE skill. Nothing like it.
i think ratz instagib is pretty similar, but has a very low playerbase
cod4 promod and cs...
+ViixEdits lul
Well i can tell you more games where its about true skills :)
quake champions is free for a few days on steam
a quake remake hurry
I was cheering even now, while watching it as if it was live stream.

Quake 3 embodies an era when PC gaming was simply astounding. *wipes single tear away*
really wish for new arena style fps games
ruclips.net/video/XQaN3h-S4Wo/видео.html
Check this out, they are working on something you might like :)
Well Unreal is one of the best and I prefer it over Quake. Unreal Tournament 4 is being made and it's free and you can download it now.
same here bro.
Reflex is an insane game too
i had some good times with quake 3 arena on dreamcast. also quake 2/3 on pc. great game till this day.always heart pounding action when playing.
is one of the casters ddk? he is now casting for csgo pro matches
This is a great top 5 series
Such a classic game, probably the most skill demanding fps. I really hope to see it comes back to esports mainstream.
that reaction time, respect to all pro quake players
Very cool highlights :)
People are still playing Quake 1, which was released in 1997 originally :) Of course the engines have become better through open sourcing them, but this tells something about the excellence of the game mechanics in the Quake 1 and 3 (which Live is based on).
Quake Forever!
I kept screaming every few seconds...that's way too intense I need to take a breather!!!
6:27 so pure rapha standing there like a G looking at everybody like:
"Wassup noobs, who wants to bring me my coffee?"
That might be the case of LoL, but in DotA you more than often have more than 4 spells, the most advanced hero in the game at this time usually have 14 spells (with the standard active items) along with 5 passive spells (that you have to click).

Quake is simply the best! The hardest game o master! I really hope we get a new one that will become the number 1 esport! It surely deserves it!
when's the last time 2gd mentioned it? haven't heard anything about it in ages :/
Is there a way to dl this movie without the Yt Compression?thanks
Best Quakecon EVER
chance vs evil was INTENSE
Its not just the maps and guns. Its timing, precision, speed, and simply, skill. Not just any yooha can pick up Quake and become pro in 2 hours.
That was fun to watch.
Man I can't play these games. Its so hard! How many hours do you play to be able to railgun like that wow!
What happened to the big stages? I remember quakecon being more epic
Two hours huh? I have a challenge for you then. Join Quakelive (free) find the best duelers in your area, play them, and then tell me if its still easy to learn. Play for a week, then reply back here with you profile / stats.

quake champions is free for 2 or so days to take

Would've been nice if u could have fixed the sound on the finals, but i suppose using demos meant no casters :/
Evil is beast! For me he's the winner of Quakecon.
quake, the best fast action ever!
I like games like LoL and SC2. But this Quake Live, takes all that strategy from those games and puts it in a fps. The combination it's incredibly good. oh the memories ...
He didn't compare it to those games, he said that it should be played more and should get more recognition, wouldn't you agree?
still waiting boyo
wow at 12:23 id be like calling a timeout cause my heart would be smashin
hahaha that lil john reaction of rapha

i dont have an idea of what's this game is, but dude.... THAT AIM.! WOW
Vodkagarbage

i would love a new one.but as long as it keeps the original
feel.new graphics same feel.
No, you can't. This game is a legend. It requires pure skill, perfect timing and godlike reflexes.
You're new to quake aren't you?
I won't comment on Quake's e-sports potential, but DotA 2 is on the lower end of the skill-intensive spectrum. DotA/LoL are too formulaic, and the equation is very easy. Anyone play Quake 2 Lithium?? 2-3 times as fast, more angles and crazy rails
try ut 2004 if you think quake is the hardest game to master lol.
ironical comment there.. settings are on ultra low for performance reasons, as pro's do.. that u call it noob says more about you than about this game
how about you try getting those accuracies on rapha :P doubt you could even have time to fire. Accuracy is most affected by the person you are playing, not by your play.
the skill of people playing quake these days is ridiculous
Simply Quake! This game should be right next to SC2,DOTA2,LOL; too bad IEM/ESL doesn't support it anymore on its tour.
Sure.
If you think that's all you need to know to be good at Quake, you are hugely mistaken..
Compare it to a common sport like tennis. A ball and a racket, how hard can that be? Its easy in its basics, but to play like Federer you will need some years of training and a huge dose of talent and skill.
I've played Quake, I'm just saying it doesn't look too hard to learn, that's all.
my mind was blown... O__o
You could make the same blanket statement for every game ever.
"It's a generic [x] game, just pick it up and get into the action! You don't necessarily *have* to learn [y] to play!"

there absolutely no chance that you've played multiplayer Quake and say that it doesnt look hard. This isnt CoD boy.
But you got me curious :p add semtido on quakelive and let's duel :P
only thing they spam A LOT and hit 2 or even 3x more in actual fights
Newb spotted. As a duel player, he's right. Jump around for two hours, time power ups, you're set. All it takes to learn a map. Now, maintaining map control ability? Life time of progres.

1996 actually ;)
Not trolling, being genuine.
he obviously was talking about hours per day...
quality is terrible, even in 1080p it's still blurry
nice game yes, too bad no cooller on quakecon, no cypher, no strenx, etc etc
See, it's still an FPS and anybody can pick it up, even though these professional players have been playing for years, the game is still simple to learn. actually he plays LoL it seems, from looking at his feed. which doesn't surprise me. the game itself is great, but the community on it is horrendous.

Hours? try years...:P
Lol, weapon stats on duel don't mean a lot, since the best players spam a loooot ;).
Shooting rockets at your feet & walls makes you fly across half the map... ofc their accuracy is crapy overall.
Why dont people play a real FPS like Quake World?
warsow is good dont get me wrong, but quake came first bro
go play some duel matches and then return
This is not modern fps this is quake. I'm sure you never played it and have no idea what you are talking about.
It looks boring because the truest of e-sports (well, sports in general) are not about flashing colors or crazy environments. Quake, Counter-Strike, StarCraft.. all some of the biggest names in e-sports and they are games without all the extra doo-dads that new ones try to push on us.
'Duel Masters'... In Quakelive?.... NOOOOOOOO... not quite.
all these pro players have a 6th sense...
How is it the hardest game to master? it's an fps, lol.
he's a css player
now you know why he's hating ;p
Not hard, learn the maps and guns, won't take you more than 2 hours.
Fucking tibia... kids died over that game.
kidding me?
damn this shit is too action packed adn i dont understand shit from what they are talking about
Русские есть?
You know, respecting what other people like to play could be a benefit to both you and others; I play both, and I find them both enjoyable to play. So...stop being a butthurt fanboy.
