Thanks for taking the time to give us the history behind the Dred Scott decision. What a black mark on the history of this country, and something so important should be taught for us all to learn and understand the complex and imperfect events that have shaped our country today.
It was
Indeed, it was the supreme Court that paved the way to the civil war!!! They have blood on their hands! BIG TIME!!!☹️
It's not surprising that camping nights have not gone up in national parks - campgrounds in my experience are always full, and the parks are not building any new campsites, so how could camper numbers increase?
Exactly
I worked in Yellowstone for 12 years and the total number of campsites went down during that time. Practically every available campsite in the Park is full every night camping is offered. Historically there used to be much more camping but the slant is for resource (land) protection now.
Thanks to all Rangers and NPS leadership for protecting our national treasures, and thank you Jason for keeping us informed about them.
I liked the touch of history to attach to the place. Very cool 🆒
Many national parks have extremely small sites that preclude many that have a trailer over 20 feet long.
Those happen to be my favorite
I really appreciate your channel providing National Park updates 👍
With Aramark charging $650 a night for a hotel in Yosemite who can afford to go? And they pay their employees $16.00 an hour.
I drove past the Arch a half a dozen times before I realized their was a whole museum complex underground. It's a cool place. Go there
It's too hard to get reservations at some parks. Too many people. Not worth it.
Too many people make reservations and don't show up and don't cancel their reservations. The tag still goes out on the clip and sits there for the entirety of the original reservation period and never gets occupied. The six month system is a joke! The lack of same day or day before reservations is a joke. The number of empty, but reserved, sites that I've seen at Glacier, Yellowstone, Redwoods, and Zion is absolutely ridiculous.
there are plenty of great places to go, and best times to avoid crowds.
@@standingbear998 unfortunately we experienced the very issues I listed above in early October at Many Glaciers CG in Glacier. It was ridiculous. Half the CG was reserved but empty in what is very much the offseason up there, what with snow falling while we were there. Just experienced the same thing in Zion this February. The two spots next to us were reserved for days upon days but the people never showed. Yes, I agree there are plenty of other great places to go besides the NP's especially during the high season.
@RocksOff72 Lucky you. A camping experience with less intrusion from people. Imagine bitching about a flight where the person next to you doesn't show up.
@@LittleRayOfSnshine69 you missed the point. How can one enjoy a "camping experience with less intrusion" when they can't get a camping spot in the first place!
1/2 Billion dollar NPS budget increase (15%) is NOT a modest increase. Don't forget, they have also added, increased, user fees as well.
It's about a $300M increase, less than 10%. I do think that's modest, especially considering this is a budget request, not the final budget.
Your short history of Dred Scott, and the dreadful Supreme Court decision, was immensely informative and inspiring. Thank you for that piece of little known history for most of us!
Very welcome. -J
Nice video. I especially like your talk on the Gateway Arch National Park and Dred Scott case. When I was there, I enjoyed the museum underneath the arch and going up in the cars to the top of the arch. The cars were not what I expected.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great explanation on the Gateway Arch! It truly is a landmark for the Westward Expansion and the Western National Parks as we know them now. Loved the museum under it!
It probably has more to do with how difficult it is to actually plan a trip to a NP. It's still a nightmare and crap shoot to make reservations even in Off peak seasons.
Thank you for all of these updates. We appreciated learning the historical importance of the St. Louis Arch, including the Supreme Court case, associated with it. Very special!!
We were at the Arch this past spring. I can totally understand why it is a National Park. It is an amazing structure. Lynn and Danny
What an awesome video. Thanks for the history behind St. Louis.
You’re very welcome.
I’ve lived in the St. Louis area all my life and now 67. Your pc on the river front was very good and very up to date in every way.
Thanks for the reminder on the Dred Scott decision. Sincerely.
Lewis and Clark actually left from St. Charles Missouri which is on the Missouri River. Lewis finalized the plans in St. Louis, but then joined the rest of the expedition in St. Charles.
The town was established in 1769 during French rule.
The street along the river still has cobblestones and the buildings look preserved from that era. I think the legislature met in the dry goods store until their new building in Jefferson was built.
It’s now pretty much a suburb of St. Louis, but it’s near the eastern end of the Katy Trail (bike trail)
If we’re getting technical, Clark kicked off the expedition at Camp Dubois in IL, Just up the Mississippi from the mouth of the Missouri. They picked up Lewis in St. Charles.
This was fantastic - great NP news updates AND a critical history lesson, that will now stick in my head in a way that a textbook doesn't seem to. Awesome job!
We stopped at Gateway Arch NP on the way to the rally last fall. It's a beautiful park! It was the 1st time we'd been there. We stayed at Cracker Barrel because we thought the campground looked sketchy. But I've heard since the campground isn't bad.
Thank you for the history lesson! I learned about the Dred Scott decision years ago, but this was a welcome refresher with great details.
Glad it was helpful!
Great video. Thank you for the attention on the Dredd Scott history. Well done!
That was so interesting!! Thanks!
Remember, you don’t have to outrun the bear. You only have to outrun the others you are with. 🤪🤪😂😂. Sorry, that joke doesn’t get old.
Thank you for the video, Jason. Just think how well our national parks and highways would be maintained if we weren’t spending all this money overseas and wars. I just wish everyone could get along.
Good job, keep up the great work.
Love the history. Thanks
Our pleasure!
A lot of the NPS campgrounds can’t support the McMansions on wheels that people seem to feel are necessary for a “camping” trip. 🙄
The problem with a lot of housing in the parks is that there needs to be a realization that all the people who work there aren’t 18. Adults don’t want to have to room with strangers in dormitories. Actual single occupancy housing like a motel room/efficiency would draw a lot more workers.
I can’t understand why there hasn’t been a designated express lane for annual/lifetime card holders at every park. It’s so aggravating to spend the money on a pass and have to wait people purchasing daily passes, asking a million questions, etc.
I am headed to St. Louis for a month in May and I am now more excited than ever. Thanks for throwing in the quick dive into one of the National Parks.
Enjoy!
One of your best updates ever! Love how you covered so much, Excellent reporting!
Thank you kindly!
Excellent video! Awesome information. Thank you. 👍🏼😎
My pleasure!
Good info. Thanks for sharing.
Glad it was helpful!
On my way to The Arch next week. Thanks for the information.
Hope you enjoy it!
So true!
Good informational video. I’ve been to the Arch many years ago.
Thanks for watching!
Jason is a national treasure. Thanks!
🎉 nice news cast.
Thanks!
Nice job love the show
Thanks for watching!
Awesome 🥰
No surprise NP camping numbers have remained the same. They won't add camp sites!
My local supermarket has a bear management area. The bears are delivered skinned in a refrigerated truck, and come out in styrofoam trays.
The administration just reallocated funding from the national park service to immigration services...😢
Driving costs will keep people close to home and if home is in?? New Jersey?
all travel and things that refresh and revitalise people are under attack. remember 2020 one of the first things shut down was gyms. Your food, water health'care' anything that keeps you heathy strong and happy is a target.
Have you seen the story of NPS visitors suing NPS over their cashless policy?
Yeah, I'll cover that on our next national park news round-up.
Gateway Arch a National Historic Park maybe, but boats or no, this location does not meet the standards of a National Park.
NP camping isn’t increasing because all the sites are taken during the times most people can use them. Can’t increase something that’s at max capacity.
More funding, more taxation, more park expenditures ....... and higher rates for the "public" to go see their own parks? How does that work as a "good thing"..... ? The inflation doesn't make the money worth more "folks"!
. . . and 70 units for $40MM??? That works out to $571,429 each!
Not to get political here but our parks deserve better financial support! We are more than willing to subsidize millions of illegals pouring across the border but can’t increase the parks critical budget by anything more than 3 million! We could EASILY double their budget for all the money we throw away to foreign countries, illegals, and financing of foreign wars! Sorry you for the rant but our parks system is something tangible and precious that benefits those that live here in the US AND out children inhaling those kiddos in our future.
Nothing could be better for our Parks, frankly, than for us to stop loving them to death. In other words, for visitation to drop! Yes, I know the economics of it, but there is more to it than economics. There is the simple fact that popular parks have basically become huge parking lots, where thousands of backed up cars spew tons of polution into what was once pristine, fresh air; and every attraction is shoulder to shoulder, Disneylandesk insanity! I am perfectly fine with them raising the admission and camping fees to make up the difference! Let our parks breathe again!!!
Dont be stupid and try to take a 'selfie' with any wildlife. LEAVE WILDLIFE ALONE AND DONT FEED THEM!!!
Not only should there not be a national park at the gateway arch…
National parks, National forests, and BLM lands are all in violation of article 1 section 8 of the Constitution.
So you'd prefer that Fairfield Inn builds a hotel with Old Faithful as the center of its lobby?
I believe our current USSC would have made the same determination in the Dred Scott case. Funny how things never change.
Imagine if the park service got the wasted funds sent to Ukraine
Imagine if we didn't try to keep the wars from coming to our homeland? There wouldn't be any national parks to maintain possibly.
@alexdrozd1 Russia taking over a country that used to be Russia is not coming over here, and cash will not win a war its just paying somebody off
Democrats stupidly Killed the month-long Camping Road Trip
We could do a better job improving our national parks by not giving away billions of US dollars to finance projects in foreign countries.
Now if attendance would start declining, the park system might be worth visiting again.
Awesome review and history lesson...it's on my list now 😊🏕✌🏿
Awesome!
