      Agreed on both counts. One of the best novels, and this scene really is the true heart of the entire thing. Pyotr and Stavrogin are negotiating the true nature of the human Devil. Stavrogin and Shatov are supposed to be our Devils, but I think the true Devils are Pyotr and Julia.

      @Balderbrok You know what? You're right. I really don't know why I included Shatov with Stavrogin as a 'Devil'.

    Fantastic scene from the heart of the novel. I only wish they took another minute or so to elaborate on "shigalyovism" and the elimination of education and higher thinking, because in the revolutionaries minds education creates only despotism and hierarchy.. something Jordan Peterson elaborates wonderfully on, and something Dostoevsky truly prophesied.

    I was really surprised to learn that Dostoevsky might have deliberately hinted at Pyotr being homosexual. There was a bit of a research on it even in the Soviet era - the word itself was never mentioned, but there were other descriptions like him being "sexless", "decadent", attracted to handsome young men (Stavrogin), very fashion-concious, not having any affairs with women, his facial hair not really growing much - hinting at some hormonal problem, eccentric mannerisms, etc. Apparently, for Dostoevsky it made the character as demonic as possible, added to the rest of his behavior. Which is awfully homophobic for our age, of course, but still rather interesting.

      ‘The Demons’ is a book that talks about the spirits of revolution and rebellion as literal demonic entities, a parasitic growth in a state guided by orthodoxy, that resulted from people turning away from God, from morals and tradition, to the barren European illuminism that promised nothing but death.
      And you talk about homophobia? Do you realize how naive you sound? What do you suppose Dostoyevsky’s attitude towards gays would be if he were alive today??
      No matter how hard the West tries to shame us for being allegedly backwards and close-minded for not tolerating homosexuality, we will always regard it as exactly what it is - a social virus and an abomination, and looking at America today, it’s more than enough proof that those words are true.
      In conclusion - don’t try to filter Dostoyevsky. His words will never fully make sense to a westerner, and that’s ok.

    A question. (I didn't find appropriate clip to put this comment): Did Stavrogin collect butterflies in the book? I dont remember he did.

    • @tomsterling7195
      @tomsterling7195  Год назад +2

      There's no mention of butterflies in the book, it's just the tv-series director's idea.

      @@tomsterling7195 Ecaxtly. I just saw a theatre adaption of "Demons". It's understandable they add things. In this TV-version Stavrogin is in the centre of everything, not Stepan Trofimovich. In both adaptations they left something very important out, namely that when Stepan Trofimovich leaves the town, he starts to earn his living by selling bibles: he is the only one who has remorse.

      Thats true did not in the book, the director was just inspired by a painting called vanity by jan van hemessen, it appears in the movie as well as he talked about too

    • @texwiller4029
      @texwiller4029 6 месяцев назад

      @@splendiddox6408 Yeah, I saw that painting now, thanks. He slightly changed the profile of Stavrogin, who was not a polymath but a womanizer. In theatrical adaption which I saw in Vienna, the director played a lot Rammstein style of music, very loud. This created a strange contrast since the crowd was old.

      Глупость написали. Достоевский глубже, чем чьи бы то ни было захватнические амбиции. Подумали бы лучше про "слезинку ребенка" - и то, сколько детей погибло в Украине под российскими ракетами.

      @@theodemirweltmann9673 бордели и гейклубы были во все времена с начала зарождения цивилизаций. И люди, пользующиеся данными заведениями, никуда не исчезнут. Не нужно запрещать все на свете. Вопрос лишь в количестве и доступности таких мест. Кому надо, пусть ходят. Главное, что бы остальному населению это в глаза не бросалось и не пропагандировалось, как сейчас это происходит в западном мире или в том же Тайланде. Ровно такое же отношение к легким наркотикам. Их не нужно продавать официально, но сажать людей в тюрьму за несколько грамм марихуаны это бред. Главное не распространять, а то что в поле растет или в лесу, так природа распорядилась. Кто хочет пусть собирает. Есть теория, что человек стал разумным как раз благодаря таким растениям и грибам. За производство и распространение синтетических наркотиков конечно нужно сажать.
