Really love this video! There are far too few coaches talking about this. Myself I've got short arms and look like a fridge so I would love to see an in depth video on my body type! I bet several other people would like that for their body types!
1:40 That's totally me. I'm 6'4" 300lbs and started playing golf 3-4 years ago. Figured out this problem a few months ago. Wish I had seen this sooner.
This was good therapy, Dan. I'm 5'7" and am always trying to get my hands higher in the backswing, well, because that's what I see a lot. I've flattened my swing at times and strike the ball pretty well but I keep telling myself that's not good enough. I think I'll go from now on with the swing that supports the body that God gave me. Cheers from Canada. Thanks.
Great insite into what works for the individual player. Not the "one size fits all swing " a lot of coaches work on. Good to get the message out there Dan.
Great starting point for long-armed golfers. At 6'3" with a wingspan of 6'8" I struggle with this a lot. The best swing thought I have for a wide turn is this: (1) start the backswing with your lead hand gently pressing the grip/handle down and away (from your body) while maintaining a fixed head position (this thought ends when your hands are belt high and your club is parallel to the ground). CHECKPOINT: your hands should be inline with or slightly over the toe of your back shoe (not inside) and the butt of the grip should be pointed towards your target line (2) From the hands at belt position, think about pushing the club away from your body, keeping your hands as far away from you back ear as possible. (3) Once your front shoulder touches your chin, lock your lead eye to a dimple on the back of the ball, fire your hips and enjoy the fairway.
Dan, I just want to say thank you. You speak my language. What you say makes sense to how I process things. Last year at this time I was shooting ~100 to110 per round (hard to say w/ all the mulligan and reshots I'd take then but my worst round recorded was 117), Sunday I shot for the first time ever 9 holes at better than bogey golf (7 over!!!) and ended up finishing the round at 89 (my first sub 90 round). No freebies at all. I'm looking forward to getting even better, but I just wanted to say a big thank you. I follow a few other golf channels, and while they provide great instruction, I almost always come back to this channel to hear it "in my language." I've gone from having an uncontrollable slice to a natural draw with the ability to fade the ball if needed. My contact went from miles before the ball to taking a smart little divot behind it, and holy cow do I look like a different player. I hit my driver a bit on a trackman last year, and again a couple of weeks ago and, with the same driver, my swing speed is up. My club face to path is much better, and my swing path went from 5* out to in, to 2* in to out. I still have consistency issues and make TONS of mental mistakes but as far as mechanics I'm so much better than I ever would have dreamed I would be a year ago. For comparison (average over 10 balls): Swing speed then: 98. now: 106. Club to plane then: 8* open. Now: 1* closed. Swing path to target then: 5* out to in. Now: 2* in to out. Angle of attack then: -2. Now: +1.5. Thank you.
Appreciate Video clip! Forgive me for chiming in, I am interested in your initial thoughts. Have you heard the talk about - Paneevelyn Swinging Clubsman (probably on Google)? It is a great one of a kind guide for revealing an effortless golf swing technique minus the hard work. Ive heard some incredible things about it and my mate got great success with it.
Appreciate video content! Apologies for chiming in, I would appreciate your opinion. Have you researched - Yanaylee Yanrooklyn Magic (erm, check it on google should be there)? It is a smashing one off guide for unlocking an effective golf swing technique without the headache. Ive heard some unbelievable things about it and my buddy after many years got great success with it.
Im 6ft but have long arms and am lean and lanky. I started golf with a super flat swing just because I didn't know any better but my ball striking was terrible. now I have worked on getting my hands higher just above my shoulder plane or equal to it right around that area, with a bit more width. I'm now able to get more speed and consistency. I still have a tendency to get trapped and deliver a slightly higher handle not massively high just a tiny bit. I'm working on keeping my right elbow tucked in and up on back swing and delivery handle low and left around my body with rotation. love your breakdown of the "modern" swing. mixed with Mark Crossfields nuggets, I feel I get better coaching than a real coach. I think it's really important to analyze your swing and see what's working and not working for your body and implement changes that make sense for your body.
Awesome, I'm pretty much the same build as you and also have a flatish short swing, it took my years to figure out this was my swing and I should play with this rather than chasing something else.
Excellent vid. I'm short myself and was frustrating with looking a bit flat. Couldnt get consistent contact manipulating arm above shoulder Now I'm sticking with me!
Outstanding! I now know what I should be focusing on, maximizing what works for me while still achieving an effective and consistent swing. Thank you. Just subscribed. Excited to check out your content and share it with others.
I haven’t seen any other video on RUclips that talks about the height:wing span ratio and how it affects your ideal golf swing. My wing span is about 3 or 4 inches longer than my height, but I’ve been trying to keep my arms closer to my body. Whenever I get my arms up more it feels better. Going to have to play around with this idea!
Thank you Dan, I am a barrel chested guy and have been struggling lately with pushes because i have been trying to get more flatter swing . I am going to try my hands in front of my chest to see if my swing improves. Thank you for the tips.
I'm one of those shorter barrel chested players and the swing shown and suggestions seem a bit off since they are only for the "modern release". I've found using a one-plane swing with an old-school release works great for me. A more upright swing produces less power as does the modern release because I do not have physical makeup to make those work. I've tried them at the range and I've found the flatter more handsy swing does right by me.
Great message, Dan, of working with, and not fighting, your body type. A video that would help me is the pros and cons of being a digger or a picker with irons. Thx.
This was a good video! Though I may need to hybridize my swing since I have naturally a thick chest and back, and I realized that I rotate too much and it closes the face in my case. So I only take the club back to the top of my right pect and rotate slightly and just let my arms fall. It works best with irons but wedges especially
What you said at the end really clicked for me. Learning to find happiness in "my swing". Certainly want to improve, but I think it's necessary for a player to build upon what their natural swing looks like. Love your videos and approach to the game.
Thank you! I have been telling my current golf coach that my body will not let me get into certain positions due to my barrel chest + years of bodybuilding
Well Dan, you just used my favourite saying, I have T-Rex arms too. On top of that I’m barrel chested and rather round so so much info out I just simply cannot do!
Great video. I find it hard to get the club under my right shoulder as my shoulders are so wide, which means my right shoulder is much lower than my neck, so all the club shallowing moves have to be exaggerated.
So glad I watched this, like you I’m more comfortable with a shorter flatter swing but was never happy with it. I’m not going to worry about trying to get my short arms above the shoulder plane now👍
I really appreciate the video. I’ve always felt that body type in dimensions should be taken into account but I always felt pressured to get into the positions that I saw others get into. From now on I’m just going to swing my flat, “unattractive” swing
Good info. But one question. My upper torso from my shoulders to my hips are longer than my and legs. What I mean is from my hips to my feet are 5 inches shorter. How does that effect my swing plan.
This is a superb message that also really emphasizes the need for working with an open minded, experienced coach like yourself to find what works best for our body type, flexibility, ability level, etc.
I had my first lesson this Saturday and part of his advice was to get my hands higher(less flat) in my back swing and man I was hitting terrible shots and when I got his ideal position up top I had so much pressure in my right shoulder just. I was thinking wow I’m going to have to really fix my shoulder flexibility and get up like he says but maybe after watching this video I think I’ll stick with what feels natural to me and work on some of the other tips he gave me like quieting my legs
About time some one did a video about letting your natural swing lead the way! Nothing worse than some one trying to make every swing the same. If you understand your swing and where your miss hits come from you can be a great player! Keep it up Dan 🙂
This is a really good video!! And its typical from a coach like you who know so much about the golf swing. Love watching your videos. I learn a lot!! and what videos would I like to see? I would like you to talk more about the rotational swing and what youve learned from Hogan, Snead, Pennick, Mac O'Grady and how to use that in our daily golf game?
Thanks Dan, good stuff. I am tall but not as flexible as I used to be, so I’ve been struggling to find my swing, particularly with irons and full wedge shots. Any pointers?
Just stumbled on this concept today. Wow! Im a Ryan Fox type shape, very barrel chested and I've never been able to successfully imitate the swings my golf pros have tried to teach me. They are both younger, thinner and in one case 4-5 inches taller that me. This makes sense. Should i trg and find a pro with a simular body shape?
Very interesting, as watched through the eyes of one of those shorter, stockier types. I remember seeing a magazine article years ago that dealt with what type of swing you should have, based on your body type. It may have been Golf Tips, Golf Magazine or Golf Digest. The only thing I remember from it was that it stated that for the stockier types, during the backswing, as the club is taken away, the golfer should be consciously pulling his trail elbow back, as if in a "sawing" motion. This seems like it would cause that "too-flat-and-elbow-too-far-behind" look that you warn against, but I don't think the article was written with a Modern Rotational Swing in mind.
Thanks Dan - this is such useful info. Especially as a female, tall and very flexible golfer, I guess I’m a bit like a junior golfer. Any info on how to generate power and clubhead speed if you are junior/female golfer would be awesome.
This is really interesting, I have recently lost nearly 3 stones in weight and have had to tweak my swing to fit my new body shape, it feels more compact and I’m hitting it really nicely with my irons but my driver feels a little out of control and I feel I’m struggling with my balance, what would you suggest? Maybe a refit on the driver or just dial the speed back a bit?? Great video Dan I’ve never seen anyone else talk about this before good work👍🏻👍🏻
I’ve always been told I have wide shoulders and chest since I was a kid and my arms aren’t like super long I physically can’t get my arms in the golf swing much more then 1/2 an inch above my shoulders this video really made me feel like I don’t need that super far shoulder rotation like Rory mclroy or high hands like Dustin Johnson
Great review Dan. I never considered body type correlating to swing plane. I always tried to copy others who had a "pretty" swing. Your review helps me realize I need to understand what is the best swing for my body type not try to copy a DJ.
Great recognition of instructors' need to adapt their swing instructions to the physical attributes of the student....one swing does not fit all. This is when you become a master instructor. Thx. For your videos..Tom
So, would you suggest a player thats changing his swing to utilise and adopt the swing based on his body type or are you saying just to be aware of the reasons why someone swings in a certain way. Im currently trying to change a lot of my swing to be more technically correct. Im short and stocky. I haven’t dont any Vetruvian Measurements before but will look into this. 5ft 6” with 28” ish inside leg. Im carrying a few stone more than i should but can still get in ok positions. High handle delivery is my failing combined with early extension. The feeling of letting the club head fall behind me at the transition between backswing and start of downswing certainly helps,
Dan I had a golf pro tell me today that with the driver I am holding the angle too long. He said I should try to get the club head closer to the ground earlier in the downswing. Seemed almost like trying to cast it a bit. Could you do a vid about this. My miss has been low on clubface and a climbing slice pattern. The ball is starting on line however.
I'm 5 ' 7" 1/2 and measure out to a standard length shaft. I usually end up choking down on the grip and having my lie bent 4* flat. I'm wonder should I be ordering my shafts shorter
Extremely helpful Dan! Thanks for sharing As a definitely more “rotund” player, I have still tended to take the club inside far too quickly causing all sorts of issues. Your video was very useful in helping me see the better route in the B/S. Regards Ian
Man I really liked your video ! I'm 6'3" 320lbs. I hit the ball alright, but I feel very uncomfortable trying to have the proper swing. I'm headed to the range now just to try your tips !!!👍😁
Welcome back Dan, how was working on Sky? Having watched this Vid, I`m thinking of Matt Kuchar`s swing. It`s interesting to note that he has long legs, but relatively short arms. Do you think this is why a really flat swing works so well for him?
Dan, can I send you a video of my swing for your corrective comments? I am a body swinger as I have done weight training all my life and have large pec muscles for 68 and consequently not flexible. I want to be able to swing it left as you show in your videos but when I do, I either pull hook it left or if I try and compensate for the pull left and swing slightly to the right, I shank it. Depressed.
Hi. I’m tall but my backswing is flat as over the past few years I have shortened my swing. Now my right arm is stuck into my side and struggling to get wider☹️
Dan, what is the effect of having longer arms than my height. I am around the same height as you 166.5cm (5ft 6) my arms are approx 10cm longer. Can you let me know the rough implications of this please
I’m kind of an anomaly. I’m 5’10 235 lbs but I have a 6’2 wingspan. I find if I hit a fade to a slice then my arms are high across the chest. If I want to hit a draw then my arm feels lower like more into my nipple than above
Great video on a topic that is not talked about enough. Based on this video, you verified the challenge that i have for my body type and clarified what I need in my swing to get better results. Big thanks. Would love to get a response to my email about working with you remotely.
I just finished reading through these golf swing strategies , Jοmtοnο Naha (Go ogle it) last week before heading out and putting the routines to the assessment. I never thought that after playing for 30 years, my swinging skill could still be improved. Aside from that, the practice exercises also helped modify some small but critical positions that I once thought didn’t matter.
Really love this video! There are far too few coaches talking about this. Myself I've got short arms and look like a fridge so I would love to see an in depth video on my body type! I bet several other people would like that for their body types!

wahahaha, save this nice lengthy comment for your notes. sounds like you shoot a nice 120

I agree with the previous comment, this is not been studied enough and too many instructors do not adapt to the body type. Thank you
T rex arms 😆 classic 🦖 👍🏻

Must be said Dan, the content you've been pushing out lately has been top notch. Kudos to you
Great points, Needs to be talked about more
As a barrell chested , fat bloke with a restricted back swing, your description is inspired. Thanks Dan, this is not dealt with enough. 👍
Thank you 🙏🏼 You are a great golf teacher. Not everybody has the same golf swing. It depends on each body.
Omg why was I not told this before by any coach or golf fitter!!!!... Thanks Dan
Fantastic video! Better to work with your body type than to pigeonhole the wrong swing.
Awesome, I'm pretty much the same build as you and also have a flatish short swing, it took my years to figure out this was my swing and I should play with this rather than chasing something else.
This video is still great. Make so much sense Dan
Excellent vid. I'm short myself and was frustrating with looking a bit flat. Couldnt get consistent contact manipulating arm above shoulder Now I'm sticking with me!
Great content, help for the older golfer 50+ just starting, or loosing fitness, some exercises or tips .🏌🏽

Brilliant video that helps me accept My body and swing instead of chasing that text book tour swing that I’ve obsessed about for far too long .
Thank you Dan, I am a barrel chested guy and have been struggling lately with pushes because i have been trying to get more flatter swing . I am going to try my hands in front of my chest to see if my swing improves. Thank you for the tips.

I agree...please make a video on the picking or digging!

I’m a rotund player, I always blamed myself for pushes! Hooks or fades. Thank you for this video.
Great video!!

Like your lines about the poster boy swing which I admit I've tried to emulate. . .without much success.
Finding what works for you is half the battle Peter.
Great video. I have long torso and shorter arms. I going through the process of trying to figure out the right path. Please recommend!
Great video, Dan! 😎
So glad I watched this, like you I’m more comfortable with a shorter flatter swing but was never happy with it. I’m not going to worry about trying to get my short arms above the shoulder plane now👍
Very relevant points!
Great video thanks!
Never heard this before Dan. I have been chasing a flatter swing that maybe I shouldn't. Great info as usual. 👍
Had a quick question.. with the different types of swings does the take away/back swing stay the same?
I really appreciate the video. I’ve always felt that body type in dimensions should be taken into account but I always felt pressured to get into the positions that I saw others get into. From now on I’m just going to swing my flat, “unattractive” swing
Good info.
But one question.
My upper torso from my shoulders to my hips are longer than my and legs. What I mean is from my hips to my feet are 5 inches shorter. How does that effect my swing plan.
This is amazing love your in depth analysis of the swing. Thanks!
I’m 5’6 with a 6 foot wingspan. Wasn’t easy for me to find my swing lol.
How did you do it? I have the exact same measurements and I’ve struggled with my driver for as long as I can remember
About time some one did a video about letting your natural swing lead the way! Nothing worse than some one trying to make every swing the same. If you understand your swing and where your miss hits come from you can be a great player! Keep it up Dan 🙂

I know for us barrel chested guys like Craig Stadler and Jack Nicklaus; an upright swing in the beginning helps free me up.
Very interesting, as watched through the eyes of one of those shorter, stockier types.
I remember seeing a magazine article years ago that dealt with what type of swing you should have, based on your body type. It may have been Golf Tips, Golf Magazine or Golf Digest. Great video Dan I’ve never seen anyone else talk about this before good work👍🏻👍🏻
Damn it Dan, this was awesome!! Talk about this more please. Thank you.
Can you please do a video on how to chip with top spin, draw spin, and cut spin?
as an American I'm dying laughing when he called me "Rotund" 🤣🤣🤣
Great recognition of instructors' need to adapt their swing instructions to the physical attributes of the student....one swing does not fit all. This is when you become a master instructor. Thx. For your videos..Tom
@danwhittaker this needs a another video ! Im 6'2 and he described my swing to a T.
The feeling of letting the club head fall behind me at the transition between backswing and start of downswing certainly helps,
Lol T Rex arms ! Me as well mate. Very interesting Dan. I’m 5ft 7 and my irons are 2 degrees upright ! Maybe I should try swinging a bit flatter !
That lie angle sounds extremely flat, did someone fit you for that? According to Ping 5’7” to 6 is a standard length shaft with a static fitting.
Loved this video Dan, we don’t get reminded enough that we are all different and cannot possibly swing like the big boys
did you ever teach with an explanar dan?
Extremely helpful Dan! Thanks for sharing As a definitely more “rotund” player, I have still tended to take the club inside far too quickly causing all sorts of issues. Your video was very useful in helping me see the better route in the B/S. Regards Ian
Man I really liked your video ! I'm 6'3" 320lbs. I hit the ball alright, but I feel very uncomfortable trying to have the proper swing. I'm headed to the range now just to try your tips !!!👍😁
Well done, that is golf instruction for the majority. You almost have a single plane approach.
Welcome back Dan, how was working on Sky?
Having watched this Vid, I`m thinking of Matt Kuchar`s swing. It`s interesting to note that he has long legs, but relatively short arms. Do you think this is why a really flat swing works so well for him?
Hey Dan. First off I love your content and it has helped me improve my game a lot. I just want to ask you, what is your handicap?
My arm span and height are the same, within a cm. What swing should i do?
Dan, can I send you a video of my swing for your corrective comments? I am a body swinger as I have done weight training all my life and have large pec muscles for 68 and consequently not flexible. I want to be able to swing it left as you show in your videos but when I do, I either pull hook it left or if I try and compensate for the pull left and swing slightly to the right, I shank it. Depressed.
Hi. I’m tall but my backswing is flat as over the past few years I have shortened my swing. Now my right arm is stuck into my side and struggling to get wider☹️
That first swing with the low swing plane is like Matt Kutcher’s swing
Kusher has long arms
What about the downswing?
This guy is good
umpa lumpa golf
I’m 6 foot and mostly slim with compromised flexibility. How do I generate speed?
The one flexible part of me is how high I can raise my arms. But that doesn’t lead to a big shoulder turn.
Though it’s still difficult to find one’s own swing type, I fully agree with ya, Dan.
Great vid, "little T Rex arms" 😂😂😂 quality
Dan, what is the effect of having longer arms than my height. I am around the same height as you 166.5cm (5ft 6) my arms are approx 10cm longer. Can you let me know the rough implications of this please
Dan Whittaker thanks Dan. I’ll have a look at that. I’d still like to chat about dates to come up to see you for a full day session.
Great video. I’m definitely the first guy lol
Swing your swing ie.. Mr.Palmer. Well done Dan at least you are honest.
i like mike adams for this stuff
John Daly always says swing with the belly not the hips hjaha
aka BIOMECHANICS!
Sounds like I have all the body types
I just finished reading through these golf swing strategies , Jοmtοnο Naha (Go ogle it) last week before heading out and putting the routines to the assessment. I never thought that after playing for 30 years, my swinging skill could still be improved. Aside from that, the practice exercises also helped modify some small but critical positions that I once thought didn’t matter.
Doesnt look like you have short arms Dan???
I have short arms and I'm tall 🤣
ok now do the skinny weak uncoordinated guy
