- In Groundhog Day, Bill Murray portrays a man stuck in a time loop reliving the same day; a day he lives so many times that, by the end of it, he is probably a time lord.

The Mask has the ability to make imagination real, according to the comics.

*Guicksaving*
I thought about this too. It probably says something very bad about out moral character. I wonder if most people think that if there were no consequences they would slaughter a bunch of people. I came to the conclusion that I wouldn't in the end because I wouldn't want to see that kind of pain no matter what. Imagine graphically murdering someone and then seeing them the next day too.

Except that we know that God can change the winning numbers, so he'd probably just re-randomise the numbers after Carrey gave the powers back.
Also, if God decides who wins it, then it's not the numbers, it's the person who picks the numbers.

Feel sorry for Bill Murrys character in Groundhogs day, I mean imagine living the same day for 10,000 years . . . .then the rest of your life would be over in a blink of an eye (comparatively)
I feel like by the end of it he was in a much more calm state, having it seem as if it really was day to day life again. Once the cycle broke, sure it would feel weird as hell, but he has Rita.
I think by now he's accepted the idea of death
He would have gone from knowing everything that was going to happen in any moment to unknown. It would be a very hard thing to get used to.
I think he was there for closer to 30 something years I think somebody calculated it and based on what were shown and the average amount of time it takes a person to learn a skill it ended around 30 something years.
Read a fun little (2.7 million words but same thing really) story that spins off groundhog day. The full time a repeat takes is closer to around a year instead of just a single day, and there is more then one person in the time loop. It starts at around 8 people but slowly expands as more people enter the time loops, some of which pretend they aren't, and others are simply in a different place so that they never meet the other time loopers for many repeats. It also lasts a lot longer then groundhog day, and as at the point I'm currently in (still havent finished it) the first person to enter the time loops is at the bare minimum several quadrillion years old.

You forgot to mention that time lords actually do get punished at times in a time bubble
In the context of the universe he's in, Ricky Gervais in The Invention of Lying might be the most powerful comedian. As the only man in the world who can lie, everyone assumes he's telling the truth and he can essentially have anything and convince people of anything.
Professional Meme Enthusiast 1 He could also communicate with the dead like in Ghost Town!
@V-Rex
Yeah I know
not many people have watched that movie
does he ever say "I am able to lie" ?
Mbark Biba I just found out it existed a couple weeks ago it was a great movie
Bill Murray Has 10,000 years to plan... sooo he's almost to batman levels of planning.
Imagine what bill Murray would have been able to do with the internet
On Bill Murray's abilities. His knowledge only extends out to the time he wakes up, to when it resets. He can only know the things that exist up until those hours, and only the things that he can get to in those hours. Like Link in Majora's Mask, but only having 1 day, instead of 3. Not to mention that any effect he would have on the world is only able to be done if he can get to them. If say, 24 planes crash at the same time that day, then he can only get to so many. There's also the fact that he needs to spend some of those hours to cure him of the curse by finding that true love. Which, in his world-saving, there's also the possibility that he may find a quick and sudden true love -as romantic movies sometimes do- on one of his adventures, on accident.
If he breaks away from those hours, like in the end of the movie, then everything after that is mortal experience and he loses his powers of prediction.
I think we're giving the characters the benefit of the doubt here. Jim Carrey as a malevolent god would be stopped by Morgan Freeman who is the actual, capital G, God. So if we already have to concede that point to make this fight necessary I would say that Bill Murrey should get the 10,000 years of looping the day of the fight. Since a year is basically 365.25 days he gets 3652500 days so on day 3,652,501 he needs to get this right BUT he does not get the benefit of knowing the time limit as he never knew in Groundhogs Day when it would end.
I like when he's taking piano lessons and his teacher is impressed with his ability so she asks if it's his first lesson
He replies "yes but my father was a piano mover"
in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Jim Carry was able to stop this on memories from being erased. Something presumably no one else has done in that universe.
you think Bill Murray's character ever tried to kill everyone in town before it reset
Duh, like he's never played a single player RPG lol.
Exactly, if it's gonna reset, everyone else is just an NPC

@GazB85 ok so even during the day though, he still has Bruce almighty's powers and his ability to communicate with animals from Ace Ventura. Also, given his God powers from BA I'm sure he can just make it so that nighttime restriction is gone and utilize it 24/7.

Are we going to count Adam Sandler in “Click”, I feel like he definitely possesses extreme power with that remote
Adam sandler in click, Little nicky, Super human strength in Waterboy, he's a vampire in Hotel Transylvania, and how can we forget You don't mess with the Zohan
Well actually not really... it only changes how he experiences time, not how it actually happens. While he can change his own view of the world, one of the main theme tie-ins is how the world goes on without him. So although it's very powerful from his perspective, I don't think it could compete with someone who has a god's intellect, or a god's powers.
@@adjoint_functor It is surprising that he never abused the Pause function to really think things through, or the rewind function to look at things from a different perspective (apart from looking at his mistakes because of his accidental rewind/skip). the amount of power just being able to watch a scene of your life as an outsider could be great for clarity. Need to study for a test? rewind to the day the teacher taught that lesson and rewatch it, need to solve something? pause it to think it through.
Jim Carrey would also have Dr. Robotnik's skills. Imagine him with a giant mecha on top of all his other powers.
The line in Liar, Liar specifically mentions that it's something the character heard was true. And since he can say it, that means that he HEARD it was true, as he said, not necessarily that it was definitively true. Aren't there also parts of the movie where he gets away with lies of omission?
You beat me to it. My question is, did the character know he was using this loophole and was showing off his lawyer skills or did he not realize the loophole?
We use the movie in rehab to show the signs of recovery. And that he only gets out when he learns to us defuse and be more positive
I believe it is heavily praised in certain Buddhist circles as well. The whole "life is suffering" thing, and the implication that Murray's character achieves enlightenment I would assume to be the reason why.
Definitely a great film, and I'm so glad they made it vague and unexplained. Could have easily been a cheesy 90's movie everyone forgot otherwise.
Speaking of rehab I start a suboxone program next week. 15 years of near constant opiod dependence coming to an end Monday afternoon as I have to be 48-72hr in withdrawal prior to buprenorphine induction. Never been more afraid of anything in my entire life, as I've never gone more than 24hr without at least tramadol, codeine or loperamide to ease the w/d's. Pretty sad that I'm ashamed of myself for quitting, lol. Always thought I'd ride this train the rest of my life, but I'm just too tired to hustle anymore.
@Cas Jun Thank you, I appreciate that! I just feel like such a baby that I'm so terrified of this when there are real issues of life/death people face on a daily basis. I guess its all perspective though. Have a nice day!

Sorry, but for Liar, Liar: Jim Carey's character said he HEARD about the bladder thing. Thus he told the truth, he did hear it. But he still can't verify whether or not it was factual.
@@dane1647 But he could tell non-factual statements, like when they stated the woman's weight was 105 and he said "Yeah, in your bra."
@@rekrn12345 yes, his character could only tell the truth in as far as he knew it was to be. So if he believed that something was the truth, such as the holding it in, he would be able to say it since he does not believe himself to be lying. Doesn't mean he could just make stuff up about a subject he doesn't understand though like quantum physics. If he honestly did not know then he would be forced to say that he doesn't know.
I was super sad when they took Doctor Who off of Netflix. I had gone through and seen lots of bits from throughout, but now that I’m older I wish I could go back and watch it seriously

The battle between Bill and Jim ends very quickly. Jim attempts to say "I can defeat you" if he can say it, he wins. If he can't, bill wins
Bill Murray's character is very powerful as long as he was in the loop, afterwards he would be knowledgeable about a lot of things, but also very vulnerable. Going from many years of knowing exactly what would happen every second of all day, before it happens, to the unpredictable nature of reality would be a major upheaval of his thought process. Would he be able to convince himself to leave the town where his knowledge allows him a small measure of predictability?
Bill Murray: you're star platinum and my the world are very similar stands

I wish there was a scene in Liar Liar where Jim Carry was sat at his desk saying "Next Weeks Powerball numbers will be, . . ."
Well if he gets all his movie powers he has get the problems too, specifically the curse of only saying Yes from "Yes Man" and the split personalities from "Me, Myself an Irene". So now he's either an wimp or a psycho that can only say yes, has the powers of god and a dog that bites your balls.... Okay yeah, he wins.

The clip shown where he says "a gust of wind..... a dog barks...." he is just sitting in one spot. We could presume that he has either sat or stood or laid in every spot in every part of that town and to the same level where he can say whats going to happen. Just how long would that take on its own?
If you’ve ever read Miss Peregrines home for peculiar children one of the characters did the same thing. It took around 73 years I believe and that was for a very small town.
Why is nobody saying anything about Jim Carrey’s The GRINCH, Dude LITERALLY STOLE CHRISTMAS, and then grew a heart many times its original size instantly!

Ok, get this- Adam sandler in click can literally pause and reverse time

At least the Mug is situational I think Bill Murray says I love Kids at least 3 times in the movie itself.
If Bill Murray didn't age at all while reliving the same day, it's probable that his body reset to where it was when he woke up meaning he could never have the muscle memory to become a master pianist or sculptor.
How about Adam Sandler? We have Click and Little Nicky. He doesn't die and can use magic.
Matt Anderson and Ben chose him over Ross
Also the cobbler, so he can disguise himself as anyone.
Too bad he's not funny

Happy Belated Birthday Karl
Someone should make this, Cinematic Universe battle. Jim Carrey being Bruce Almighty the mask and from Liar Liar against anyone!!! And the characters from all of their movies.
Could you imagine what that first day outside of the loop must have been like for him? Dude spent countless years living the same day over and over again, being able to predict everything that happens around him down to the subtlest of weather patterns. How is he going to handle going back to world where things are actually unpredictable and his actions actually have consequences again?
Not really a time lord, just a guy who’s lived a really long time.

This has nothing to do with Murray being a time lord. Did you even reference Doctor Who in it?
Aaron Edwards I guess it’s just cause he lived for thousands of years, has time powers, and can come back to life when he dies.
Also, Groundhog Day probably was probably an influence on the episode “Heaven Sent” Where the 12th Doctor is transported to a castle where he’s trapped and being chased by a monster, and when it catches and kills him he wakes back up in the room he started in

Meaning that if a person legitimately believes something and spreads that misinformation, they aren't lying.
@Rhys Hansen I've seen Liar Liar multiple times, and the movie never explicitly states that is the case. The premise of the movie is that he cannot LIE after the kid makes the wish. A lie is the deliberate telling of something false.

The Robin Williams amalgam would be overpowered. He's been a genie, a robot, an alien, master of disguise, and Peter freaking Pan.
Yay much love from the USA
Here is a thought that just occurred to me, Murray's character doesn't need to stay in Punxsatawnee. He could drive out of town immediately after waking up & go back to Pittsburgh or many other places. He could go to any place that he can reach in a single day.
Jim Carey's character couldn't say God is real because if he were, most any god who disseminated abrahamic teachings would prevent it because one of the tenets is to worship on faith not concrete knowledge, albeit would go against non intervention hence giving said God a principle paradox.
