Hamilton (Scots: Hamiltoun; Scottish Gaelic: Baile Hamaltan) is a large town in South Lanarkshire, in the central Lowlands of Scotland. It serves as the main administrative centre of the South Lanarkshire council area. It sits 12 miles (19 km) south-east of Glasgow, 35 miles (56 km) south-west of Edinburgh and 74 miles (120 km) north of Carlisle. It is situated on the south bank of the River Clyde at its confluence with the Avon Water. Hamilton is the county town of the historic county of Lanarkshire.
The town of Hamilton was originally known as Cadzow or Cadyou (Middle Scots: Cadȝow), the "ȝ" being the letter yogh), pronounced /kadyu/. During the Wars of Scottish Independence the Hamilton family initially supported the English and Walter fitz Gilbert (the head of the Hamilton family) was governor of Bothwell Castle on behalf of the English. However, he later changed loyalty to Robert the Bruce, following the Battle of Bannockburn, and ceded Bothwell to him. For this act, he was rewarded with a portion of land which had been forfeited by the Comyns at Dalserf and later the Barony and lands of Cadzow, which in time would become the town of Hamilton.
Cadzow was renamed Hamilton in the time of James, Lord Hamilton, who was married to Princess Mary, the daughter of King James II. The Hamilton family themselves most likely took their name from the lands of Humbleton or Homildon in Northumberland, or perhaps from a place near Leicester.

Hello. I wasn’t aware of this piece of history, my mother was a Hamilton, we have a castle on the Isle of Arran, it The Brodick Castle, which is now in the hands of “Arran Civic Trust”. Marry Queen of Scots slept there on occasions. I’m quite proud of my Scottish Heritage. I enjoyed this video very much. Thank you. ❤❤❤😊😊😊 LK from Canada.
Naw ye don’t
I love This walking Video of Hamilton
I was born in Hamilton, I left to join the army nursing corps. I travelled back to Hamilton at least two or three times a year as my family were all there. We lived in Burnbank, I had a great childhood. I may live down south now but my heart has always been in Scotland. You know what they say, "You can take the girl out of Hamilton, but you can't take Hamilton out of the girl" although I Amar from being a girl now lol. Thanks for this as I am no longer able to get 'back home' I can at least see it here.
Aww thanks so much for watching. Hopefully, I would be uploading some more tours of Scottish cities and towns including landmarks. Hopefully some of them will bring back lovely memories. Thanks again for watching.
I hope to visit one day, I am related to Clan Hamilton all the way back to Robert the Bruce. Nice video.
Thanks for watching and hope you'll enjoy your stay when you visit.
There used to be a bar featuring Robert the Bruce. I think it was called Bruce’s Cave. It had a big sculpted Cave with Bruce and the spider, taking up the entire wall opposite the bar. I remember when it got changed and I thought it was criminal taking Bruce away.
Naw ye urnae

Great place I live there
I love it here. Thanks for watching
Me too :)
Would recommend for a relocating family?
Lived there for nearly 10 years from 2003, unfortunately it’ continues to go ‘downhill’ sad to see so many closed shops.
What could be responsible for this? Has this been the case before the COVID-19 lockdown?
@@olumidefadeyibi It has been like that for ages most of the shops probably weren't getting enough people in and purchasing stuff
@@purple.cat3064 aww but I feel the developers of new houses are attracting new home buyers as the prices in Glasgow is going up and Hamilton is now a choice for new buyers as they get more value for less money in Hamilton
I got my first flat in Hamilton and I’ll move by a couple of months, I’ve been renting with Flatmates because prices are crazy around Glasgow, my mortgage would be around £300 alone. Can’t wait to move, I ve been paying £280 with 3 flatmates and no living room
@@olumidefadeyibi It was relatively lively until the lockdown, then alot of the town center was dead as a result when things reopened
Just a big town at the moment.
Hamilton hasn't gained City status as yet. But has a surprisingly big population. I hadn't realised that it has so many more people than Motherwell.
You're probably right it doesn't really look big be a city, however it has all the infrastructure and amenities to be a city plus the population is growing so fast. I guess when people move out of Glasgow they head for hamilton. Thanks for watching.
No it a clear video thank you
Thanks for watching
Beautiful walking Tour. I would prefer softer music
Hamilton is now a ghost town..sad but true..
It's such a nice town and I hope it picks up soon
@@olumidefadeyibi the old hamilton is nearly gone..loads of beautifull buildings are either torn down or left abandoned...the cadzow street building next to the glen is totally done...i dont think a refit would even work....even the hamilton advertiser building is gone...old verses new and new is taking over...history is nearly gone😢
@@memphisrains1008 yeah thats sad. its better to keep the history and build new ones.
Are Fingals and the Wee Dram still open? I used to visit Fairhill years ago.
not sure, I guess I should do another tour of Hamilton now that things are fully back to normal aka new normal. Thanks for watching
I saw my mum’s shop lol lol
Hahahaha would be nice to feature her shop more in my next walk through Hamilton now that the lockdown has eased a bit. Thanks for watching.

Can one work in Hamilton and live in Glasgow ?And please are they a lot of blacks there .got a job there recently want to know more before I move .
Yes definitely Hamilton is fast becoming home for diverse people especialy Africans who want to raise their families in quiet environment. The travel time to Glasgow is under 30 mins and there are buses and trains that come to Glasgow regularly (check times with SPT). Lots of people live in Hamilton while they work in Glasgow or Edinburgh. Thanks for watching.
I live here too, came from London. Great place with nice people.
😄
Hamilton's a Town not a City.
