    I was a professional carpenter about 35 years ago but am a bit rusty now and out of practice. You never really truly forget though (kind of like riding a bike) So I simply refreshed my memory and regained the jist of hanging double doors after watching a number of videos but …..
    This is by far the best video on hanging double doors that I’ve seen anywhere on the internet. Thanks 🙏 for the precision in which you explained this sometimes uncanny and tricky task. May good karma come your way. ☮️

    Why... Oh Why.... did I not find this video before I installed my exterior double doors? Would have saved me so much time understanding these simple methods for retaining usable leverage points. I want to rip mine out and start over... the tops of the doors are just barely touching. I'll first try your hinge-bending methods from your other video and see if I can't get this addressed. You, sir, are incredibly articulate and concise. This will definitely help me with replacing interior double doors...

    Solid method for installing doubles or singles; went real smoothly. The real deal would be showing how to trouble shoot those flexible poly jambs that have a tendency to s-curve meander, deflection and twist, causing tight hinge margins and binds. You'll need a lots of shims and slow careful placement, other wise you'll chase adjustments around in circles.

    I like the procedure. Saw this on the Katz road show. Worth while. Saw Mike slogatt too. I use lipstick on that bolt to locate the hole. I slap lipstick on it, the cheaper the better. Put it in place and raise the bolt. The lipstick shows right where to drill.

    Thank you for your video! Could you clarify one thing for me? How would I correct for cross-leg by hammering at a wall? Wouldn't the wall be unable to move because it's fastened down to the subfloor/foundation?

  • @ryanern18
    @ryanern18 6 лет назад +2

    I just replaced all my interior doors using this method. All of them ended up nearly perfect and I think its a.) packing out the rough jam, and b.) that shim above the bottom hinge, that are often missed in installs. I used to dread doors now I love doing them.

  • @michael.schuler
    @michael.schuler 5 лет назад +2

    Gary, thanks for these door videos. I use a different method to survey for crossleg, especially if I'm installing in an existing frame in an old building where the entire wall is leaning out of plumb. I use the How Far Out level gauge in a way not so often mentioned in its promotion: not just as a gauge, but also as a positioning device. First I place the jamb level against the wall on one side of the opening. Presuming it's out of plumb, I use the gauge as a positioning device and advance the leveling screw until the bubble reads perfectly plumb. The level with its one end spaced away from the wall now becomes a new relative "zero." Next, leaving the gauge in this extended position, I survey the other side of the opening. If the bubble no longer reads perfectly plumb, I know the opening has a crossleg problem --- and I can know this even if neither side of the opening is plumb. After advancing the level adjustment screw until the bubble reads perfectly plumb on the second side, I read the gauge again. By subtracting one gauge reading from the other, I know exactly how far one of the sides needs to be adjusted to get them both into the same plane. Clearly, diagonal strings can do the same thing; this is a new and efficient way to skin the same cat. www.howfarout.com

    Hey Mr. Katz, not sure if you check the comments on this video anymore, but first I'd like to say I love watching your videos. I've watched this particular video at least 6 times in preparation for installing a pair of interior doors in an office conversion in my house. As far as I can tell most of what you're saying is intuitive. One question I have is, are there any different steps for an interior pair of doors? The only potential difference I can see would be that I'm not dealing with a threshold. Any guidance or comments would be greatly appreciated! Thank you for putting these videos out! Kyle

      When the shims oppose each other i.e. thick ends on opposite sides then it doesn't matter which side they come in from.Then you tap on the shim which has its thick end facing you and they remain parallel.You may,of course,need to put e.g. 3 one way and 1 the other if the rough opening is out of whack,thus keeping the frame adequately supported and square,regardless of what the opening is doing.These are sometimes called 'folding wedges' in the UK,where traditionally they are used for height adjustment and levelling of oak cill/bottom plates at the same time.
