thx for the review Jim. Just cracked a bottle - like you say it's good stuff. I hate to admit it, but there is something about the worm tub whiskies of Diageo that I really enjoy eg. Glen Elgin, Oban and now Mortlach. Yes its chill filtered 43% etc etc but they are master's at blending these single malts to get the best out of the spirit.

I have watched dozens and dozens of scotch, bourbon and other whisk(e)y You Tubes. Jim has an amazing nose, palate and analysis. I would like to know more about his background and training. When I go to Scotland next time I want him on my tour.

Great walk through. My wife gave me the Distiller's Dram (16yr) for Christmas, so I look forward to watching this again when I have that open. Cheers!

I had a bottle of this a couple of years back. I really liked it. Expensive here in Canada ($100 or so). I even got a wee taste of tobacco on the finish. First time I ever got that. Stylish presentation. When you did your comparison, I guessed the Craigellachie 13! Close. :). Happy new year, mucker! :)

Cheers Rich. Funny you weren't alone in guessing my choice of Craigellachie 😄. Either I'm that predictable or you lot are in agreement over this one. Or both 🤔😄.
It is a little more expensive although, your prices seem very high.

Hi Jim. Opened this myself the other night with a couple of Speyside fans. Good gear , but perhaps on the pricier side for what it is. A good change from the usual Speyside suspects though. Slainte from the Highlands

Have a Signatory bottling of Mortlach and it is SO good. Keep an eye out for it.

I have an unopened bottle of this in my stash Jim and looking forward to opening it particularly after his review. Think the Mortlach bottle and the Glenturret bottles are superb. Diageo do come in for a lot of stick but in fairness they do manage to pull it off most of the time. Cheers.

Cheers Howard. Couldn't disagree with you there buddy. Yes, they chill-filter and add colour but, I couldn't say I've had one of their expressions yet that has been really bad.

This btl. has me interested to try-- does this one come close to say, any of the Tamdhu bottlings? I've had the Batch strengths-- very sherry forward, those-- Cheers 🥂

Solid one Jim. Had a few indie mortlachs that were very, very good, not to say brilliant. May well be tempted to pick this one up now. Cheers

Decent review Jim. Thanks very much.
I do like the Mortlach 12yo, however there are some great independent bottlings out there.
And regarding the 'if you like this, then try this...' section, I quessed the distillery you came up with, though the somewhat younger expression to stay in the same price range (#NoSpoilers 😏)
    Slàinte mhath

Hi Jim. To be honest I’ve only had an IB Mortlach and what a whisky it was💪👍. CS , 10 yrs old , hogshead matured. This 12 year old sounds good though. As always a throughly enjoyable video, cheers Jim have a great new years eve.

The only Mortlach I have had (that wasn't in a blend) was an Alexander Murray and it had a strong band aide or iodine component that put me off. Sounds like the chill filtering done here may have stripped that out? I do certainly like all Craigellachies I have had. Cheers!

Cheers Drew. Nope, definately never got any iodiney notes here so there's something very different there. I really gotta try an indy or 2 of Mortlach. Seems to be great spirit.

Had a couple of bottles of this not long after this new range came out. Really enjoyed it but of course would be better at 46% ncf nc. Would make a nice gift with the nice box and the bottle that looks like a perfume bottle. Enjoyed the new 16 as well but this 12 is a better value. Cheers Jim

This is a distillery I have yet to try but really want to. Sounds to me, Jim, that you love scotches made using worm tub condensers. Maybe do a comparison with like minded brands like Springbank, Talisker, Benrinnes, et al. I tend to agree that the price for what it is may be detrimental. I might go the indie route with Mortlach.

Cheers Bill. Yeah I'd definately like to try some IBs from this distillery. And yep...I do love the dirtier feel that worm tub condensing brings.

Nice stuff Antonio. Not sure if it's worth the extra price but...still nice.

Well, since you compared it to the 17 it must be good but.....I just noticed that it's on offer from my local dispensary for the same price as Bunnahabham 12 and Highland Park. Tempting quandary. One commenter noted a funky iodine Indie bottle. I would tend to lean indie with Mortlach but this seems to be a trend defying official bottle.
Big fan of Craigellachie. I am not drinking single malt because they are smooth. Funny story': a friend of mine came over last week with a Glenkinchie Amantillado Distiller's edition. Said it was very expensive for his normal purchases. I don't care what he paid, it was to much, JW Green would have been better and cheaper. For a single malt, it was pretty but void of any interest.

Cheers Matt. Insightful as always my friend. In future...I'd aim for an indy bottling of this.
