I've been playing this guitar all day - putting it through it's paces. I tried it with Boston. I tried it with Journey. I tried it with Peter Frampton. ALL PERFECT! I opened up the cavity to see what electronics I am working with. IT HAS DIME-SIZED POTS!! This HUGE sound, this awesome response, with DIME-SIZED pots?!? Wow! Mind officially blown! I even did the lowering the volume to clean it up (for Boston's 'More Than A Feeling') and it worked like it had a treble bleed circuit!! It sounded PERFECT! So, here's the problem: I have new pickups coming for this guitar in the next few days..... AND I CAN'T UPGRADE IT! I just can't bring myself to change anything! This guitar performs like the best Les Pauls I've ever played - usually fully upgraded! So, ya know what? I'm LEAVING IT STOCK! The guy I bought it from never changed out the pickups because he said they were muddy. These are NOT MUDDY! They're awesome! So, I guess I'm going to have some extra pickups laying around for another project! GO FIGURE!!
I just picked up a used Schecter C-1 Hellraiser for a ridiculous price.. about 12 years old with the active EMG 81TW/89R which split.. well.. the 89 is alnico V with a reversed coil where the active one sits closer to the neck.. and the bridge is 2 pups in one.. EMG 81 plus a single coil.. very cool.. however, when I noticed the neck was TOO straight i put some small relief in it and lowered the action to 1.5mm / 1.2 mm. the pups sounded like MUD.. I forgot to lower them as well.. and after doing that pure heaven.. the single coil on both the bridge and neck work well.. really is all about setup sometimes.. thanks bro !!
Hey, man, it's my pleasure! It IS all about the setup quite often. A lot of guitar players, sadly, are lazy. They don't know how to set up their guitars properly - and don't want to bother trying. They want everything done FOR THEM right out of the box. And if it isn't perfect out of the box, then they declare it junk. I blame idiot RUclipsrs for this growing mentality. People like 'Fluff' (Riffs Beards And Gear) with his crappy, misleading, 'I bought the cheapest guitar on xxxxx' videos where he takes the guitar out of the box, does barely a tune up, doesn't set anything up, and declares it junk when it goes out of tune, the action is too high, and the intonation is off. Lots of RUclips clowns make those videos because, as my friend Ed said, it attracts the 'low-hanging fruit'. My big problem with that, above the stupidity it fosters, is that new guitarists will watch those misleading videos and be basically lied to as the RUclipsr cleverly guides the attention to which guitars/gear they're getting PAID to promote. It's my belief that EVERY guitarist should know how to do a decent setup - at the very least. When I learned how to work on my guitars back in 1990, it was very liberating! I spent 12 years playing guitars just as they were because I never knew how to set them up (and I was a scatterbrained teenager - haha). After that, I could customize all my guitars and my playing skill started to increase rapidly as it got easier to play the instrument!
I got the Gold, and the Black one.. Very powerful humbuckers,. I did swap out the nuts for some Brass ones... My sound is like a Santanaish.. Look up on this channel, Grupo "Yare", Amanecer. with a band in Venezuela.
congratulations brother, this gold top les paul SX will be my next purchase, in fact this gold top les paul SX was my wish to buy, but at that time I did not find, now it is in Europe and in the coming days a I buy it👏👏🤘🤘
Thank you, Alex! Awesome! I hope you love it as much as I love mine! I am VERY impressed with this guitar! I have to do the Boston test video on it today. 😎👍
Skip that's a beautiful smooth sustaining distortion. Lovely looking guitar too! Nice you're quite shocked in a good way wow! I have been through a few BOSS guitar processors lately and can't realy find a distortion that's not scratchy...yet, I've gotta take my Boss-GT1 back I'm disappointed....
'It's the sustayyn! You can go have a bite and come back - you'll still be hearin' that one!' 😆 Yeah, I never had that much good luck with Boss stuff. I tried the Katana in a store and it didn't seem like it was as wonderful as the bought-off RUclipsrs were saying it was. haha! Some people can make the Boss stuff work, though. It's just not for me. I do all my stuff on the PC now. My amps and processors are collecting dust. I have, basically, access to every amp and effect ever created. So, I can shape tones that way. I'm not playing out anymore. So, I don't really need amps or processors that much. I'm a bedroom rock star! haha!
I like that guitar. And for the price, can't beat it. I would not change the pickups either, they sound great to me. And it looks great to boot, looks near new from what I can see. I think you got a great deal on it. I checked out some SX guitars, they are out there, and I'll keep that in mind when I check Craigslist, I check it every few days or so.
Thank you, Dale! The SX guitars are excellent and I can see this Les Paul rapidly becoming one of my top favorites I own. It's a breeze to play and works so very well with my interface/amplification. 😎👍
I like how your tone is fat like John's but still has the articulation. To me his tone from 1987 and thr blue murder album was unbeatable. Alot of guys went buzzsaw and had these nasty trebly tones. Great job as always brother!
Thank you, Dave! Can you believe this new guitar of mine has DIME POTS?! And those are the SX stock pickups! The lowering the volume to clean-up works perfectly as well - as if it has a treble bleed circuit! I was going to upgrade this guitar. After the day of playing Boston, Journey, Def Leppard, and now Whitesnake, I'm convinced. It stays just as it is! Stock! 😎👍
@@FreeMeLife Hey, Brandi! Awesome to see ya! Well, I was going to upgrade this guitar originally (I just got it today). But, now, I'm not because of how it works so well! It's perfect! I wouldn't change a thing! 😎👍💜💜💜
It's looks nice and solid... sounds fantastic!! Looks new from here Awesome find you got Axess definitely want one now lol"!! There website has some nice les Paul's thats forsure....
Thank you, brother! Yeah, this is my 2nd SX Callisto Les Paul. The other one I have is the one I recently did "Don't Stop Believin' " by Journey with. Plus, I have that P90 Tele. They're all awesome and solidly built. So, now, I actually WON'T upgrade it. The pickups will just be sitting around waiting on a project sometime. Good thing they were around $40 for the both of them. I've spent more than that on dinner! That Les Paul Custom on the Rondo Music website that has the quilt top is pretty cool looking. Plus, they'll be coming from New Hampshire - my home state. So, none of those California shenanigans! I live a little over an hour from where they ship them out. I had a few sharp fret ends on this one. But, it's the season. A sanding sponge for a few minutes smoothed them all down. I love that it's only 8 1/2 pounds!
@@Axess-sv8nq I was just showing Cindy the les Paul's they have.. lol" the quilt one you linked me to is nice! But I like the Gold top better!! Lol"" We don't have to drop $2700 either on it... so this is were the p90 telecaster came from Awesome!!
I also can't believe it has DIME POTS and basic caps! It sounds so powerful! And the clean-up when I lower the volume (for Boston songs) is perfect. Plus, the tone pots are very smooth and accurate. Go figure!
Yeah, the guitar is pretty incredible! It's SO comfortable to play - much lighter in weight than my other customs - which is great on the old muscles! Well, time will tell on what I do with the pickups. I just have no idea at this point.
@@ccjmusic Haha! Not a chance! I have a 3-pickup Les Paul - and that's more than enough for me. The only way I'd get another one is if someone GAVE me one of the Ace Frehley models. It's an OK guitar. It's just a pain in the butt remembering the weird pots configuration and bumping on the middle pickup surround when playing. With the pots thing, I can see why Ace disconnected the other 2 pickups. 1 was a smoke bomb. The other was because it was too much to think about while playing live! haha!
I would like to ask you, what are the differences between callisto sx les paul and this one, how do you like the neck from gold top compared to the one from callisto?
Hey Alex! Sorry for the late reply. RUclips sometimes hides comments in the Studio. The necks on both are very similar. So, they're both great. It's a C that's tapered toward the body. VERY comfortable to play! This guitar is pretty awesome!
Hey there! RUclips hid this in the Studio section. So, Sorry for the late reply! It's going OK. I am OK for heating oil and driveway plowing - should we need it again (fingers crossed we don't)! Sold some odds and ends that Dad and Mom had lying around (antiques and stuff). So, money is stable for the time being.
I put it in the pinned comment at the top of the comments. But, basically, I bought 2 pickups to upgrade the ones in this guitar - BUT, these sound awesome! So, the problem is that I don't have to upgrade it now. My plans for this guitar changed completely within half a day of owning it! Now, I'll have 2 pickups for some possible future project. Good thing they weren't very expensive.
