I am second generation with 24 years experience myself. I see these drains daily. Also, most of us contractors either just say rolled roof (looks like shingle material)or rubber roof (usually white or black). It’s very generalized compared to actual membrane material used.

I actually though the pressure was going to bust the pipe off and the water was going to come gushing out almost horizontally towards his face. He is lucky that it wasn't as an extreme of a release like the story you're sharing here.
I'm a plumber, and what was coming out of that pipe was super clean compared to some of the horror blockages I've experienced. You definitely need a strong stomach.

That's an overflow outlet and your roof is probably flooded. The outlet you're banging on is connected to an overflow drain on your roof that sits higher than your primary drain. You wont see water from that outlet unless there's an issue with your primary roof drains and the roof is flooding. Its set up that way because most commercial roofs don't get a lot of traffic, and that overflow outlet acts as a ground "alarm" to let you know there's something wrong on the roof. So if you're on the ground and see water coming out the overflow, you know you got a problem. Unclogging that overflow isn't going to solve your issue if the primary drain is blocked. You really need to get that roof inspected, PRONTO, by a commercial services roofer. If you have any kind of defect, the water's freeze/thaw cycle will cause expensive damage to your EPDM membrane, your draining system, your insulation and your decking. That water you unclogged is a warning, so listen to the warning.

@@dcle944 pvc is fairly heat resistant and with the ice acting to keep it cool you could likely heat the pipe surface. It may get to using the hammer honestly.
Mine sure did when we had an ice storm last November in the Puget Sound area. It cost a lot of money to fix and thousands of gallons in wasted water flooding my carport and garage.
I’ve done this. Only the buildings I worked at were constructed over the Boston waterfront. The roof drains emptied under the buildings and one winter they got plugged with ice. All the drain lines were backing up and we were seeing leaks everywhere. Once we figured out the issue my company bought us a small dingy and during low tide we paddled under the buildings to release the plugs. I had a blowtorch and ice pick and freed up all the pipes. The rush of water was so intense. Looking back now I can’t believe I did that for the shit company I worked for.

For those that really don’t know it’s a roof drain overflow meaning the drain is blocked and that’s just the overflow. Roof drains run straight down and under the floor of the building so they don’t freeze so this is an indication that someone needs to get up there and unblock the drain.

That is why I noticed draining pipes with heating cables in them. Seems reasonable to install cable in pipe and avoid pipe bashing which can break the pipe too.
I thought that's what we was waiting for, figured a couple good wacks and that plastic was going to snap off. I live where we see -20 sometimes and you don't beat on plastic in that cold lol😂
Had a similar situation with ice build up that went waaaaaay too long without maintenance. Lesson learned, dont go 5 years without defrosting the mini fridge freezer, otherwise you get a 4lb ice block that doesnt allow you to close the freezer door anymore

I’m 44, and got into Anime in the 90s, and then Japanese architecture/carpentry. I got married and had kids (which are all ASD). I started to make real financial progress before COVID, but inflation afterwards wiped it out. Both the wife and I now work full time and have gigs on the side so that we aren’t living paycheck to paycheck but can pay off debt and save. Water weighs about 8 pounds per Gallon. That is a lot of weight on any roof. That pipe should have one of those electric "tapes" running thru it to keep it open and warm.

That is why I noticed draining pipes with heating cables in them. Seems reasonable to install cable in pipe and avoid pipe bashing which can break the pipe too.

Had a similar situation with ice build up that went waaaaaay too long without maintenance. Lesson learned, dont go 5 years without defrosting the mini fridge freezer, otherwise you get a 4lb ice block that doesnt allow you to close the freezer door anymore

I’m 44, and got into Anime in the 90s, and then Japanese architecture/carpentry. I got married and had kids (which are all ASD). I started to make real financial progress before COVID, but inflation afterwards wiped it out. Both the wife and I now work full time and have gigs on the side so that we aren’t living paycheck to paycheck but can pay off debt and save. I’m not sure if I’ll ever make it to Japan 😅 but I sure enjoy your videos, so please keep at it!
