So happy to hear that so many people are diversifying! I could go on forever with recommendations, but I'll narrow it down lol. Persepolis (graphic novel), Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe, Go Tell It On the Mountain, Agents of the Realm (web comic), I Thought My Soul Would Rise and Fly, Their Eyes Were Watching God, Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry. Sorry if you've read these before. These are just some of my faves!
Liss Herondale it portrays brown/dark skinned people as aggressors (which is a harmful stereotype) and VRoth in an interview said the characters' gifts were a sort of supernatural chronic pain (which is a very mistaken thing to say about people who suffer it). Zoe's links are helpful for a more detailed review as well as Emma's (emmmabooks) on Goodreads :)
I read straight through the bind up of The Bane Chronicles and as they went on I became more in love with them. Especially the Malec focused ones, they killed me with feels lol.
comicBookChick lol my favorites are the malec ones but I think my favorite story of the bind up is the voice mail one aka the extra one. thats a little sad 😂😂😂 but i thought the bane chronicles were entertaining but damn i loveeee the tales from the shadowhunter academy
comicBookChick haha i already knew they were back together when i read the bane chronicles so i wasn't that sad. but its my favorite because i was legit cracking up while reading that one
Thank You so much for being so respectable about CTM and it's problematic parts. As a book that was widely sponsored on booktube, I am glad that people like you can appreciate the feelings of others. :)
I listened to A Monster Calls on audiobook because I couldn't get my hands on a copy. I fully intend on getting a copy and rereading it, and while the audiobook was lacking in the visuals, the one I listened to from audible was very good! I loved the book!
I'm currently reading Pride and Prejudice and I couldn't help but remember you, Zoë! You have made me pick up this book and I have to say that I'm really liking it! Almost halfway through and I can't wait to know what happens next. I'm glad to know that the February book for the book club is Jane Eyre because I happened to get it at the same time I did P&P!
You shouldn't be disappointed in not noticing subtle racial elements of stories because they are (by definition) subtle. What's important is that you learned from it and are now planning to read more diverse books! Last year I started making an effort to start reading books by more diverse authors. Two books that I would definitely recommend are Kindred by Octavia Butler and Push by Sapphire. They're both written by black women and deal with racism (both subtle and obvious).
Wow Mr. Knightly beats Darcy?? I need to read Emma now haha! I've been wanting to read london belongs to me for a while now. Looking forward to your liveshow! I'm amazed how many people LOVED A Monster Calls. I need to get my hands on a copy NOW.
Don't worry the Bane Chronicles continues to get better each novella. I would recommend reading the bind up, because it'll feel more like a CC book that way :)
I'm halfway through the audiobook for Before I Fall and so far so good. I am not crazy about the narrator, some girl from Grey's Anatomy that I don't watch, but I am definitely enjoying it more than Lauren Oliver's other books. The movie trailer looks great.
Oh my lord. I read Before I Fall when I was 10. I absolutely loved it! I don't understand when people say they don't like the book because it's repetitive. She is re-living the same day 7 times, of course it is going to be repetitive! She does change each day, though. So it's not like your reading the same thing over and over 7 times.
The Bane Chronicles is kind of like the Shadowhunter Academy series; push through the beginning and by the end it's great! I will say that the Bane chronicles get better before the Shadowhunter Academy series does, but they're still great reads! Hope you like them!
Veronica Roth came up with the premise for Carve the Mark when she was 9 or 10 years old, so I'm sad that people took her idea to mean something racist because that wasnt her point at all. It's on First Draft podcast with her and Sarah Enni, so I recommend you listen to it!
akiramay She could have written the story without the problematic elements, though...even if she didn't intend for the book to be racist, that doesn't make the racial stereotypes okay.
akiramay yeah so she's had like 20 years to realize it was racist and change it. Just because it was the first concept, that doesn't mean it should be the final one.
After the first few Bane Chronicles novellas they get really good! You just have to keep reading! Will and Tessa are in the fourth novella. That should give you incentive.
that first novella in the Bane Chronicales is so disappointing - I loved all the rest. There were one or two that I felt were wrapped up really quickly and too neatly, but for the most part, I love it. You got way more Malec. :)
I wasn't a fan of The Bane Chronicles even though I'm a huge fan of the Shadowhunter books. I think the 4th novella is the only one worth reading, it's called The Midnight Heir. It's about James Herondale! The Tales From The Shadowhunter Academy novellas as so much better I gave all of them 4 or 5 stars! Highly recommend them over The Bane Chronicles
I feel like everyone's so concerned about diversity that they're writing off great books because of others opinions. I know books are supposed to have a positive impact, but can't we go back to just enjoying a book?
Yes! And I'm noticing that everyone who initially liked Carve the Mark has backpedaled and ended up apologizing for liking it. That is so crazy to me! Like you can't just like the book without having a to apologize for it. As soon as someone starts saying it's "problematic" or isn't "diverse enough" everyone jumps on the bandwagon and now you're not "allowed" to like the book. It's ridiculous. Whatever happened to just liking what you like regardless of what other people think or say? Apologizing for liking a book just boggles my mind.
niicolereads Books doesn't have to reflect real life, so it all comes down to your own personal preference. Since people have been complaining and I think they make a fair point I won't read the book. It doesn't reflect my personal view in real life, therefore I won't support it. But people's preferences in fiction often do not reflect their preferences in real life, so I don't think there's anything wrong with buying and enjoying it. I do think it's great that so many booktubers are setting a good example and informing us about it though. They're in a position where they're able to influence many readers, so I think it's only natural for them to be extra careful in what they promote on their channels.
niicolereads I agree like I want to keep reading some diverse books but it's not the only thing I'm going To do or read. I'm just going to read whatever I want to read and I think it became a little bit of an issue on booktube with the whole diversity thing. like diversity is great but you should also read what you want and even if carve the mark is problematic you can still like that book even if you know about these problems. like for instance i loveeeeeee an ember in the ashes but it has some problems but I still love it to death. so i think everybody should read what they want to read
niicolereads reading diversely is the new hipster thing to do... and if it isnt diverse you arent a good person because you didnt notice it while reading. People take shit to seriously especially since the book isnt even racist. Everyone is basing it off of one persons warped vision of the book which is even sadder... like read for yourself and see whats wrong with it then they can bitch.
This month, January, is the last month we are reading Austen books and we're finishing up with Sense and Sensibility 😊 February's book is Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë!
really want to know about your review about BEHIND CLOSED DOORS by B.A PARIS I think it's really good and so far there's no review video about the book on RUclips
I still dont understand the issue with carve the mark! The "savages" are not all dark skinned!!! Cyra the main girl states herself that the siblings of the shotet tend to look different because they are so mixed! Her brother is pale in comparison to her! Its a mixed nation. Just ugh...you werent ignorant. you didnt see it because it wasnt there is all.
Stephanie Bain but that in itself is also bad because a lot of main characters tend to be white washed, not saying being white is bad, but the representation of different cultures and races are limited. The fact the Veronica Roth made dark skinned people the 'aggressive bad guys' was bad enough but the fact that the main character was not fully dark skinned too states a problem. What is the problem with black people that they can't be the main character without being washed away? While that may not be what Roth was going for, it is what I and a lot of others got when we were reading the book.
Xena Smith okay... ITS BECAUSE THEY ARE ALL MIXED FAMILIES. The shotet is a diverse nation of all colors, hair types, personalities. So its an issue that they are all black. Its an issue if they have characters that are white washed. Last i checked that is the world and She incorporated it well. The main character CYRA is dark skinned her brother the ass hole is pale. Akos is pale. Akos brother is light brown. How is that a controversy or a problem? Its a fictional book meant for entertainment.... 😒 have you read the book?
Hey. I'd recommend books but I prefer recommending authors so here's a list of amazing authors who I feel don't get as much attention as they should: Ellen Hopkins, Tamora Pierce, Ursula K Le Guin, and Alison Croggon.
I enjoyed the bane chronicles but they're not great or anything. The Malec ones are definitely worth the read (at least for me I'm a sucker for anything Malec)
Have you read this article by Sanaa Tahir? Also, Veronica Roth explains in an interview with First Draft Pod that both sides are all different skin colors because she didn't WANT her book to exude racism of any kind. Of course, the authors intention doesn't erase the emotional response of the reader, and I'm not trying to defend her since I haven't read the book yet. I'm definitely interested in reading it and seeing firsthand what everyone is talking about! sabaatahir.tumblr.com/post/156055223595/how-can-you-support-veronica-roths-book-its
Jazzmin C. It's expensive no matter what, bit if you go to a private college it's double the amount of going to a regular college, same for if you go to a college out of state; it doubles the amount that it costs to go to one in state. If it's both a private college and out of state then it's suuuuuuuppppperr expensive, and for Zoe it's both of those things so that's most likely why she said it's too expensive.
I live in Australia and I'm starting uni this year. It only costs $7100 Aus dollars per year ($5366 US). It's still not as good as the Netherlands but 30000+ is ridiculous!
What Really Happened in Peru is not really good, but there are some amazing novellas in the Bane Chronicles book, just try and read the others cuz Magnus is THE.BEST haha
Jane Austen is also one of my favorite authors!!! I've been meaning to read Emma but haven't gotten around to it yet!! And I always love watching your videos!!! I also have a book recommendation for you! My best friend and I just published a book (Umaric) this month! It would be fantastic if you checked it out! You don't have to read it if the description sounds boring but it'd be super cool to hear your thoughts about it if you're interested!!! You can also purchase it in ebook format via amazon!bookstore.trafford.com/Products/SKU-001116940/Umaric.aspx

Awh Natalie is so cute :P
I'm so excited for the Before The Fall movie!!! I feel you on the repetitiveness though!!
YOU'RE NOT DEAD!!!!!
So happy to hear that so many people are diversifying! I could go on forever with recommendations, but I'll narrow it down lol. Thank you for addressing the problematic aspects and apologizing for carve the mark. Mucho respect for you! Also! Always sending good vibes your way!
Paola Mancera can you tell what happened with that book? I'm not a fan of Roth so I've not read her new book and I don't know much about it
Liss Herondale I'm not sure either...I'm going to check out the links in description though to get a better idea.
Thank you so much! :)
Paola Mancera how the heck could chronic pain be a gift???? or is is supposed to be a side effect?
A Monster Calls is such a punch to the gut. So many feels
"A Monster Calls" seems really, relly good. Amazing ! I want it now (and by "now", I mean "right now" ! XD). Thank for the discovery Zoe ☆

HAHAHA!! It's so funny that you took a picture after you read A monster calls, because I did the same thing. 😆
I'm definitely going to rewatch Emma Approved now... It's just so good😍
Thank you soooo much for switching positions and apologizing about Carve the Mark

im glad your back zoe ☺ love your videos
Missed your videos! So glad your back & that's so unfortunate about Carve the Mark :/
Wentworth will probably always be my favorite Austen guy So swoony.
Veronica Roth came up with the premise for Carve the Mark when she was 9 or 10 years old, so I'm sad that people took her idea to mean something racist because that wasnt her point at all. It's on First Draft podcast with her and Sarah Enni, so I recommend you listen to it!

I haven't read any Jane Austen books but I've seen a few movies/tv series, and I actually have pride and prejudice. Need to get onto that this year 😊
I recommend gone with the wind and it's sequel Scarlett.plus if you like pride and prejudice I recommend Mr darcy's diaries plus wickham's diary
After the first few Bane Chronicles novellas they get really good! You just have to keep reading! Will and Tessa are in the fourth novella. That should give you incentive.

Great video Zoe! You should read The Hating Game by Sally Thorne! I think you'd like it 😁

The Tales From The Shadowhunter Academy novellas as so much better I gave all of them 4 or 5 stars! Highly recommend them over The Bane Chronicles
Please pick up The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas!! It sounds like a promising read
I live in FL too! Does anyone else almost feel special when you live in the same state as someone you look up to? I'm probably weird but oh well
Can you do a book review on "three dark crowns" by Kendare Blake?

I agree that the first stories in the bane chronicles aren't that good, but I think the last stories, especially the ones about Alec, are much better!

I love the Carve the Mark cover. Gah!
'I would read her shopping list and would probably rate it five out of five stars' I UNDERSTAND 😂
Where does Sense and Sensibility fall in your favourite Austen books? Trying to figure out what one i should read next
I've seen the movie movie Emma but not read the book. What am I doing with my life? 😄
Hey. I'd recommend books but I prefer recommending authors so here's a list of amazing authors who I feel don't get as much attention as they should: Ellen Hopkins, Tamora Pierce, Ursula K Le Guin, and Alison Croggon.
You said you were at a college in Florida, what's the name of it? I live in Florida so I'm super curious :)
hi Natalie.
please read the song of achilles by madeline miller !!! it has such an intense and life changing lgbtq+ romance in it
Was the university you were talking about UF, FSU, UM, FAU???
Wait, what university in Florida?? I live in Florida! I'll be going to UCF!
I didn't like the Bane Chronicles that much, I didn't even finish it. But I heard that the novellas from the Shadowhunter Academy are a lot better
wao so many new interesting books. :)
I enjoyed the bane chronicles but they're not great or anything. The Malec ones are definitely worth the read (at least for me I'm a sucker for anything Malec)

How expensive is Uni in America? It seems as if everyone complains about the price!

So true. I go to a private Uni and it's 30,000+ per year. Not counting the price of books!
Tate The Reader that is insane! in the Netherlands, tuition is €2000 a year!
I live in Australia and I'm starting uni this year. It only costs $7100 Aus dollars per year ($5366 US). It's still not as good as the Netherlands but 30000+ is ridiculous!
I'm going to uni next year in the Netherlands and its not €2000 lol. They say the average is €10.000 a year
What Really Happened in Peru is not really good, but there are some amazing novellas in the Bane Chronicles book, just try and read the others cuz Magnus is THE.BEST haha
What college do you go to? If you don't mind saying.
how can we become sponsored by publishers to send us free books?
YOU'RE IN FLORIDA?!
I've been subscribed for what, like 4 months already AND I JUST FOUND OUT WE'RE BREATHING THE SAME AIR. Well then 😂🙈
Jane Austen is also one of my favorite authors!!! I've been meaning to read Emma but haven't gotten around to it yet!! And I always love watching your videos!!! And I loved Before I Fall!! haha
Was everyone white in carve the mark or something??
I developed the reading habit in jail
I want to read so many of these books! Glad you enjoyed so many of them. Love your channel, hope you can check mine out too x
Has anyone ever told you that you look like an older Bailey Madison?
I don't really like Before I Fall because I found the main protagonist was quite annoying :/
I love if how when you look at people defending Carve the Mark it's always white people. Did you ever stop and think that because of your/our white privilege you're not as sensitised to issues of race? You not noticing them doesn't mean they're not there! So please, listen to the people around you telling you there is a problem, and trust them. There is so much better stuff out there to be read and enjoyed by authors of all kinds of cultural backgrounds.
Read Akata Witch by Nnedi Okorafor, for example!
