Some Master Systems (including mine) had Alex Kidd in Miracle World built into it so you didn't need the cartridge. This blew my little child mind at the time and probably contributes to why I love that game far more than it deserves
As a Brazillian who was growing up in the 90's, i can confirm: Nintendo was alright, Sega was king and then came the Playstation, which was god-like. But before that, the Mega Drive was the console to have.
To this day, I am still kicking myself for not buying a Sega Master System. Played a bunch of games on it when I was a kid because other friends had one. Loved most of those games. In fact, I will put it out there that there are a bunch of Master System games that are better than anything that the NES had. Choplifter, Shinobi, Wonder Boy, Wonder Boy in Monster Land, Out Run. Space Harrier and many others. Such a good system.
I'm not going to lie, any video which includes even the vaguest of Skies of Arcadia reference is an automatic like from me. I still think it's the greatest game ever made, and I'm willing to die on that stupid, obscure hill.
I was literally about to click on the link for the Genesis mini review when he says "But not right now. Finish this video first." I was like "oh, okay" lol
Thanks for the info on Segata Sanshiro! He popped up in one of the Project X Zone games. Thought he was funny but had no idea what the background was for the character.
They didn't predict anything, seeing developers were already being hurled insults at by their own employers. And today that doesn't happen; instead developers are coerced to working 100h+ weeks to meet ridiculous deadlines and rush out incomplete products. They merely showcased their personal experiences and probably accounts from their peers at other companies. Nowadays, developers still don't get insults hurled at them by fans; fans insult the companies themselves, which most, if not all, of the time, targets PR Managers and CEOs. The few times that such might happen directly at the developers themselves is when they break promises, more notably when one of those promises involves going exclusive to one platform after promising release on a different one when they were promoting their crowdfunding companies.
The ZiLOG Z80 CPU in the Mega Drive was previously used in the Master System and Game Gear and was therefore also responsible for the Mega Drive's backwards compatibility with Master System games. The Game Boy doesn't have a Z80 in it, it has an LR35902 which is closer to the Intel 8080 (it's missing most of the Z80's enhancements that made it special when compared to the 8080 that it was based on) but has a few of its own enhancements too.
Sega was king here in New Zealand, at least until the Playstation took its crown. I remember buying the 32X while I waited for the Saturn. Mortal Kombat II was amazing. But then I played Mortal Kombat 3 on the Playstation... Never did get a Saturn, but I do still hook up my Dreamcast from time to time.
I've never heard of Alex Kidd as a kid, but I've realized that he was one of the video game characters that was treated much worse than Princess Daisy.
That was a misleading lifetime sales comparison; SG1000 (Japan only, replaced early on by the Master System) Vs NES (worldwide, and released after the SG1000). A fairer comparison would be SG1000 Vs Famicom and SMS Vs NES.
The weird thing for me is that I never heard of the other Mega Drive, the one that made Sega change the name to Genesis here in the U.S. Still don't know what it is.
@@kingtron1 I think Mega Drive were a Canadian digital storage company. It makes very little sense to me why you can't have two companies with the same name in the same country or why some small storage company can stop Sega choosing a name for a product.
@@kingtron1 Actually, Atari gave the Genesis it's name. Sega wasn't happy with the job Tonka had done distributing and promoting the Master System in the States. And when it came time to bring the Mega Drive to America, they wanted a more console experienced company to handle it. Sega approached Atari about the job and they agreed to a deal that would give the rights to the Mega Drive to them. Atari didn't like the way Mega Drive sounded so they came up with the name Genesis. Atari even set up a office outside of Chicago dedicated exclusively to the development of games for the system. To my knowledge it's never been made public who dropped out of the deal and why, but Sega of America decided to handle all of the marketing/distribution themselves. But they did love the name Genesis, so they officially made the change. Laird's Lair did a nice video on it.
In LatAm, aside of Brasil, we didnt give a dang about the existance of both Nintendo and Sega, except for arcades or games for other platforms. Until Playstation, no console made it in these parts except maybe the Atari which were the first. Also they are still making Spectrum 48k games, and nobody is producing that computer anymore that i know of.

The 32X wasn’t meant to bridge the gap. It was meant to make Sega of America (ironic, considering it started as an American company) look stupid. Sega of Japan is wholly responsible for the demise of the Sega empire.
Sur. Smokesalot not sure if you’re aware or you’re joking, but Bens already with him at triple jump. It’s their own channel, and it’s also linked with Cultaholic, owned by several guys from what culture wrestling
I've figured out the 32X. It should have been regarded as a *budget* 32bit console by Sega and not a temporary one. The gaming press thought that's what it was and so did developers and it had around a million pre-orders. But Sega did not reassure developers it would be supported alongside the Saturn, so development moved to Saturn and Playstation instead. Leaving a terrible library and no reason to buy one. Also Hitachi could not make enough SH-2's for all the Saturn's and 32X's being ordered so there were supply problems too. I would have bought a 32X but never bought a Playstation and never heard of the Saturn. Sega successfully supported the Master System and Mega Drive as a two tier gaming hardware product range so why not again with the 16/32bit generations? This is being done now with base consoles and beefed up pro versions. The 32X had super powerful and very well designed hardware architecture. 2x24Mhz SH2's (48Mhz) , two extra Q-Sound pcm channels, and a new vdp at around 8Mhz for 3d geometry and literally no limit to colour. So sprites no longer had a colour limits for example. The problem was, they saw it as completing with themselves to support the 32x and Saturn so discontinued the 32X. But the Saturn was never properly marketed in Europe or Australia and the US release was marred by mistakes and no proper software and no Sonic game! So the Saturn never had a showpeice game like Mario 64. Virtua Fighter was the killer app but that was more of a Japanese favourite. I always thought the Genesis didn't have enough colours, even when I had one and when my friend said he had a Mega Drive 2 I was thinking. Oh surely, they've improved the colours finally. Nope. They'd just made it smaller to lower the cost. Big let down. Then they expect you to pay double again for the Mega CD at £300 and let Digital Pictures bulk the library with dreadful fmv games. Only Core design took the Mega CD seriously but I never heard of any of their games at the time. I think if the 32X was not sidelined for the Saturn it could have been the home of many great 16/32 bit titles and would have eventually lead to the Neptune being released as a stand alone backwards compatible Mega Drive and 32x. Then maybe combine the mega cd, mega drive and 32x into one console unit. The tower of power stacks up to the PSX and Saturn in terms of power.

Otherwise, it's nice to see you and Ben have moved on from Whatculture, just miss Adam's "posh" voice.
Terrible video. Most of this is common knowledge. There are more things that most people don't about Sega (or live negating that). 1. Sega hardly makes any games in house today. Most games are made by outsourced developers. Sega is so needy for money and attention that they've allowed the use of their characters by others as long as they pay handsomely and even allow the use of them on fan projects. The Atgames consoles, Sonic Boom, Sonic Mania and the IDW comic books are perfect examples of this "business model". 2. The Mega Drive was a failure in Japan. In Japan, the PC-Engine took most of the 16-bit market and by the time the MD was starting to get more of the share, the SFC came to end the party for Sega. The support for the machine in Japan up to 1996 was mostly fueled by the American and European markets, the 32X was actually made by American demand, though it was developed in Japan, it was mostly pushed by Sega of America. Because of this failure, Japanese MD games are quite scarce when compared to the high availability of most PC Engine and SFC software. 3. Sonic Team, pretty much like Sega today, is nothing but a brand. Once upon a time, Sega was so big they had several developing teams in-house, one of them was Sonic Team, lead by Yuji Naka. Today, is only a brand they like to put in almost every Sonic or Puyo Puyo game even though there's not a real steady developing team behind the brand. 4. Sega is mostly a holdings company owned by another holdings company whose main interest is gambling machines. The management of Sega's brands is the main thing Sega does today. Sega in turn is owned by Sega-Sammy, yet another holdings company that does exactly the same and focuses on the production and distribution of pachinko and pachi-slot machines. 5. Sega, even though is a daughter company of a holdings company, has two subisdiaries that ironically are more active than the parent company itself. Sega owns game company Atlus, creators of the Persona series, and animation studio TMS, studio that once upon a time was the animation services Dic used in the early 80s and Disney used in the late 80s and 90s.
