Composition Inspired by Nature… Spiritual
Welcome Back to Another BobBlast!
This BobBlast explores another composition close to my heart. On my Sixteen Design Composition handout, it is called “Spiritual” and is probably the most personal composition because it has to speak to me. I get ideas for my spiritual compositions directly from nature:
• Shapes of Rocks
• Eggs
• Feathers from my chickens
• Feathers from crows
• Owl pellets
• Oak pods
While on a beach walk, or in the woods… or sometimes on my way to my studio, I will stop for a second and pick up something organic that speaks to me. I have a collection of interesting shaped leaves, pieces of rusted metal and other cool things-this is my Wabi-Sabi collection of things that inspire me.
The Hindustan Times describes Wabi-Sabi: This concept is all about finding beauty in imperfection. It teaches us to appreciate the natural cycles of growth and decay. By embracing Wabi-Sabi, we learn to let go of our need for perfection and to find contentment in the present moment.
So here I am in my studio, writing in my journal and contemplating organic shapes. My warm up exercise uses chalk and pastels on paper, starting me off in the right frame of mind… quiet, peaceful and appreciative for the designs in nature.

•Meditative, positive space
•Write about your goals
•Choose your materials
•Start drawing/painting your shapes
•Stop thinking and breathe
This process is what I do before committing to a larger size. Practice sketching and painting natural shapes and single design forms. Fill up several sketchbook pages and smile. Now, that’s the spirit!

Thank you yet again! I save all sorts of God's 'junque' to sketch, as always you have lots of inspiration, many surprises. How about, at 1:21 a cat walked past the window outside...cats are very spiritual, I think. Do you ever, or have you ever, done a series with cats? I don't recall seeing any. Just asking. I'm off to have a foray into my yard to collect some 'new' old stuff. With my cat. Thank you so much!!!

Hi Ann - lots of questions! I do not use a palette knife. I use a brush, paper towels and fingers. I do not own a printing press right now. Hope this helps! Bob

your spirituality comes from dead things? how depressing
Broaden your thinking a little bit!
Things that once encompassed a life we can only imagine.
It could be argued that true spirituality only really begins at the point of death.
It's literally impossible for all forms of spiritually to be equally valid. Each belief system makes a series of self exclusive claims. To say that there are different truths would violate the law of non contradiction. There are 2 options and only 2 options: Either 1. All religions are wrong or 2. One religion is right and all others are wrong. There's no 3rd option. Every single world religion and belief system contradicts the claims of all other religions/belief systems. It's a self evident truth. Better choose wisely while you can 👍
