Any choir that can stay in key for an entire song let alone a a song where the Basses, Tenors, Altos and Saprano's come with in a note and sometimes even cross is truly a well trained choir.
actually, i was in this choir and in the live performances such as this one, there are no engineers, just good quality mics. Dr Allred is the one who gets the credit for creating the blend. he is among the top conductors in the world today. listen to other pieces by this group.
Thank you for sharing this haunting music with us. You all sounded beautiful.
I love it. I sang at CSUN.
Brings tears to my eyes
@Kingston Jensen yea, I've been using Flixzone} for since december myself :D
@Kingston Jensen Definitely, I have been watching on Flixzone} for years myself :)
What a lovely performance the choir did there!
Absolutely stunning. They sound like angels. Brought tears to my eyes. Dr. Brady Allred is a master. I sent this to a friend in Africa on Christmas day. She said it was her "most treasured Christmas gift."
Without doubt, one of the best balanced choirs on the planet. I keep returning to this rendition trying to find fault with it, and I cannot. Judging by this performance, the UU singers would give any choir here in the UK a run for their money. Quite incredible.
Love always from Oxford , UK.
2:34 is my favorite part. They nail that section so well that it gives me chills.
There’s a reason for that. music.usc.edu/mortenlauridsen/celebrating-morten-lauridsen-o-magnum-mysterium/
My sister is in the final phase of her cancer battle. Our family is full of love for her. My brother sent this link for us with his
thoughtful words. Thank you, choir for your touching rendition. It has left me hopeful and filled with peace.
I cried the first time I heard this. I just don't have the words to tell you all how wonderful this sounds. We're singing this in the UNCC chorale this semester.
This song helped prepare me for the worst trial I ever had in my life. It seemed like an exposure to the most beautiful music occurred right before I was exposed to the worst dissonance that was humanely possible. Wow, and with heaven's help I survived.
Amen and thanks be to God 🙏🏼
I sang this years ago in high school. Literally cried on stage.
I think recordings often fail to capture the live acoustics and subtleties that make a performance like this exceptional in person. Wish I could have been there to hear it it live.
I cry every time I hear this piece...ugh here come the water works! The dissonance, the KILLER bass last chord...the amazing voiceleading...just frigging incredible. I want this played at my funeral.
i had sang this song with my choir during the Christmas of year 2009 in a shopping mall...is not easy to sing this song...but just hope our song can bring more people to understand how great is our God~!!
siete meravigliosi, dizione perfetta, soprani delicatissimi anche negli acuti, fusione invidiabile........bravissimi!!!!!!
Wow. Absolutely stunning! This piece always reduces me to tears. Thanks be to God for the gift of music, for those who write it, those who sing it, and the rest of us--to whom He has given ears to hear. Alleluia!
Our pronunciation of the vowel in question is eɪ (in IPA) in words like bait, play and same. Coloring eɪ slightly with "ee" helps prevent the horrible tendency to color the vowel with "R" like it would with "air". That kind of vowel color also helps keep pitch up because it keeps the sound forward instead of letting it fall back in throat the way it does when you say "air". It is supposed to be subtle, but perhaps some of the choir members mixed a little too much ee in at times. :)
I would listen to ANYTHING this group sings: they must be among the best in the world for intonation, blending, perfect a cappella unity and great conducting, not to mention SOUL. They really mean what they sing. This is almost enough to send me back to church.
One of my all time favorite songs sang in choir... we even did it two years in a row because of how much my school loved it. I MISS BEING IN CHORUS UGH FML
This is one of those pieces that you don't have to perform to get lost in its beauty... so incredibly complex but simple at the same time. Love this piece!!!!!
Stunning beauty of the human voice!
I'm a sophomore in high school and my top choir is singing this song as a challenge. It is absolutely beautiful when we get it perfect, or close to perfect at least. While it is an extremely difficult, almost impossible piece, it will always be my favorite work i have ever sung. With a Christmas concert coming up, my choir is working so hard to make it perfect. We are a group of about 20 people and at one point it splits into 9 parts~its a challenge, and i love it :)
I've tried and heard this song in many version, it's complicated.
Until I found this video, where they perfectly nailed it. it looks like, they are connected or something. Well done.
It's the best performance I've ever heard.
It never fails to make me cry ... 😪😪😪
yes always. but i am not sure i will ever hear the sound that i am looking for when i was back in high school we were sung it...
I love this piece. I commend them for a wonderful performance, this truly is a terrific group.I just feel that this was rushed through for most of the piece excluding the "Virgo" section. well done none the less.
Beautiful, stunningly awesome, thank you, truly a masterpiece.
Stunning piece done stunningly well. Bravi!
This group has a You Tube of Lauridsen's "Shining Night" Fantastische! Polyphony, professional singers, do Eric Whitacre's and Lauridsen's works. I am calling this new music a Lux Aeternae. thank you all who made this possible for us.
Beautiful! Brought me to tears, when I was in college my choir sang Lauridsens Lux Aerterna in full... it was the most magnificent thing I have ever sung in my whole entire life. Brings me to tears when I listen to it over again!
When i'm asked what my favorite song is, I refer my friends to this. By this group. The purity of the fifths and the beautiful dissonance just outshines every group I've heard sing this. I sang this in high school, so I can fully understand the success of this group. Thank you University of Utah Singers.
Pitch - sopranos - amazing - best I've heard
I have listened again and again to this and let me say, this time without spelling errors I hope, LOL, this is the most awesome vocal performance of this piece ever!! Thank you so much to the University of Utah Singers and their talented Professors of Music. I am confident all of the members of the Department of Music at Reinhardt University would agree that you "mastered" this piece in all of it's beauty. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!
This group has become one of my favorite choral groups! I love their singing.
"For heights and depths no words can reach, music is the soul's own speech"
The best LIVE recording, I've found on youtube (so far). That they perform this work from memory is just amazing. (Stated by a former semi-pro choral singer).
Of all the choral literature, religious and secular that I have ever performed or heard, or of any piece of music for that matter from the last 300+ years, this one moves,
the MOST my soul ...
and the tears just roll ...
Just wonderful! Thanks so much!
The person/team that did the audio mixing really did a great job to bring out the beautiful voice of the choir!
This a beautifil performance!! It rivals any! Thank you!!!
2:55 is SOOO GOOOODDDD
Probably within my top 3 all-time favorite arrangements!!! This hits me & gives me ALL the feels 💓
Simply amazing
A very good live performance in a rather dry acoustics; an excellent university choir!
In such moments . Nothing like voices of a choir can connect the soul to the realms of the supernatural beauty and appreciation .
If I ever want to take a nap, I open this, and it only takes one listen. I love it.
as a brass player(tuba) i have major respect for this song!!! i played it in a brass choir at stetson university the best thing i have ever played in my life
One of my favorite pieces to perform!
I love the work of this choir and esp. this director. I think it is interesting to hear the criticisms. There may be some vowels and intonation that didn't come out perfectly but this was a live performance. I watched them in rehearsal the day before and it was absolutely inspiring to hear this live. Your standards have to be pretty darn high to not call this beautiful.
This is a beautiful peace of music and is done very well!!! Gives me chills everytime and you cant help but sing along!!
I absolutely love this peice, it's so complex and beautiful. This group did a wonderful job with it!
sublime interpretation!! congrutulations from San Juan Argentina
Fantastic! Y'all are an incredibly talented choir.
This song just takes by breath away every time I hear it- beautiful!
Wow... really takes me back to my concert choir days at college. How I miss this sort of ensemble singing. So glad this piece and others like it have been posted. Well done, kids.
Wow! I so love this piece and you nailed it! Gave me goosebumps. Thanks for sharing.
I really love this version. It's the perfect tempo!
I sang this piece in my sophomore year at Longwood University. It was great! I was visiting my cousin who went to Westminster CC and they had the composer doing a masterclass. It was great to actually meet him, and sing this piece with WCC. Amazing job!!
Each time I hear this I am amazed and brought to tears. Perfectly done!
Just Breathtaking!
i sang this with my high school choir a decade ago...it still moves me every time i hear it.
This is such a beautifully crafted sound. Job well done indeed.
tears to my eyes, all who have a soul must surely be touched!!!
So beautiful!
Amazing! Perfect!
this song has a special place in my heart, always brings me close to tears. :)
For those that criticize the director's tempo: it is his choice. Everyone has their own interpretation and are subject to it. Personally, just about every other recording of this piece takes it a lot slower, yes. This is a different interpretation where you get to hear the overarching melodic lines and not so focused on the harmonic. Yes, the chords Lauridsen wrote are gorgeous, but his lines are equally beautiful. Value the director's decision that showcases that concept in this one recording. Bravo tutti, Utah Singers!
Absolutely beautiful...
One of the best Choral works ever.. loved doing it three different choirs.
My gosh. So amazing.
Superb. How magnificent to FEEL the gestures with you all. You breathed together - in the same mood and same tempo.
BRAVO to your conductor!
Very nicely done for an amateur group! I LOVE this Composition - one of my personal favorites! I have sung that before...but now my voice is gone and I so regret that fact...and I REALLY miss singing harmony! In my own mind I sing along...oh yes, I much prefer the Kings College Version...they know how its done!
thank you for yoru agreement Suzanne
Absolutely mesmerizing.
Well I just got chills listening to this piece. I sang this with my high school chorus years ago, and I hope we did out justice like this group did..
we sang this in highschool, 2002, 03, and 04 when i graduated... I loved this song.
absolutely excellent recording. bravo.
este coro es great!!!!!!!!!! me encanta su interpretacion y soy su fan number one!!!
I've performed this piece several times with choirs, in transcription for band, and enjoyed listening to it arranged for trombone choir. It is so durable! What I love about this video is the sound engineering that captures the voices in a remarkable balance in EVERY phrase. Great example of choral blend and bringing parts out at the right moment. It's a pity the sound engineers don't get credited for making this choir video so outstanding.
Stunning!
We sang this n My High School choir... Such a moving song... Love the phrasing u chose.. GREAT!! WORK SOPRANO's.. U had me almost to tears
wow... I am performing this with the University of Nebraska -Omaha choir, and this is a great example to listen to. Thanks.
I agree with barberjazz. The piece and the performance are awesome and inspiring.
its awesome my school hinkley high school is doing this we are joining the orchestra and female choir group together
wow what an amazing performance, my dad did this song last year and it was the first time I heard it and i was very moved by it when i first heard it, thanks for posting it!
Very beautifully performed.
My friends, there is no need to bicker over opinion. One man argues his point, another his. Let us not forget we are here because of the music! This is a beautiful work and extremely difficult to balance. While not precisely perfect, UUS does a fantastic job of bringing this composition to life. Don't find an uncommon ground; listen and feel the warmth spread over you like a wave and learn to appreciate one another :)
This is such a beautiful rendition of a difficult piece.
i love it.. its so in tune
Such a winning song - and given a fitting performance !
great coach, Mr. Brady.
