  • Sherri's first IFR flight! Departing IFR in our Beechcraft S35 Bonanza. Arriving at the airport the ceilings were 100' overcast with 3/8 of a mile visibility. We waited for conditions to improve enough that we could shoot the GPS approach to return if we needed to. When the ceilings reached about 300' we boarded the plane to depart, and by the time we received our clearance and such the overcast was just about gone.
    Regardless this was a huge breakthrough for us! She has resisted flying with me IMC, but she dug deep and got into the airplane when there was a solid layer overhead. We'll build on this giant first step. Cheers...

    Love watching these video's with your wife. Mine is too scared to fly with me and so I show her these videos to poke at her a bit.
    It's also a bit fun to watch your wife give you hard time. You two enjoy life.

    Seeing the dog reminded me of when I first got my license. People wouldn't fly with me because, I was so crazy on the ground. So, I would take my dogs with me. It was a riot!!

    I deleted a couple of responses because they seem to imply spousal abuse or something. As posted earlier this was about her getting startled and becoming a distraction during a critical phase of the flight. While the sound of the engine truly gave her a fright because she was obviously tense, please know she has been flying 35 years. She flew with her parents from childhood, and with me since 1989. This is our third plane. C'mon guys.

    Just an observation. Mrs Sherri is a great copilot. She backs you up with the gear confirmation.
    Somewhere in my training I remember my instructor wanting me to announce my actions and he would acknowledge my actions. Just a suggestion
    Mrs Sherri did a fantastic job at recovering from her being startled by the engine and also by saying she would take up the issue with you after landing. I also commend you Bryan for not freaking out after she was startled.
    Kudos you two.

    San Jose.
    Regarding the S35/V35, S35's were built in 1964/1965. This was the first model upgraded to an IO520 and is rated at 285 hp and with a 3,300 lb. gross it remains the fastest of the Bonanza line. In 1966 gross weight was increased to 3,400 lbs., but the plane was heavier also thus offsetting and being 2 knots slower at gross. Basically the same plane though. If you were to shop for one it would come down to the better example, not the just the model designation between the two.

    Total pro - nice flying.
    Also, your dog popping up in the back seat, I thought, "There's someone else in the plane!!!" Thinking this was going to turn into a mid-air slasher film.

    She wanted to know why the sound of the engine changed when I stuffed in the mixture. She didn't like it and I usually don't go full rich unless a go around is needed. It made her flinch. It's a big bore Continental thing. When she flinched I got a shot of adrenaline and was distracted during my landing checklist. Bad, bad, bad thing to have happen in a retract. Had to regroup and do it again. She knows better, as do I. Hey, marriage 101 and a flying video all for free. Who'd have thunk?

    Great Video. I've been flying a Tiger AA5B for the last few years, which is a joy to fly. great performance for a 180 hp. Just about to move to Malta, and planning a Bonanza purchase. very hard to find any S35's for sale. Looking for mid 60's early 70's model. Love the fact you take your dog flying. I have a Labrador, which makes flying a very cosy experience. think he'll be happy with the change in aircraft too. Great video, keep em coming....

    How does one enter a midfield crosswind?

    • @brywd
      @brywd  10 лет назад

      It's pretty simple and very useful. Basically when approaching the airport from the opposite side of the airports traffic pattern you announce your intentions and cross the runway at midfield at pattern altitude. From there you make a turn to downwind and then fly the pattern. It is a standard entry and is covered in the AIM, although you will find people who are not a fan of it. Admittedly it can cause problems for newer pilots who are not familiar with it who happen to be in the pattern when somebody enters this way. I'd say the same for entering on an upwind, but both provide a good view of the pattern and whoever might be in it at any given time.

    in your aircraft. How many hours do you have in the Bonanza?

    • @brywd
      @brywd  10 лет назад

      The Bonanza has great manners really and is a real joy to fly. In type I'm somewhere around 500 hours give or take a few.
