Instead of flipping the legs around, flip the center pole by unscrewing the bottom hook. Now the leg locking works as normal.

So I just went to try again and just kept spinning the hook that I thought wouldn’t unscrew and it started coming loose. You saved the day. I tried before and thought it was just spinning needlessly. Yay. You rock.

they don't do a great job differentiating models ...90 inch vs 94 inch. is 28mm ball head stable enough for full size camera

Yes. You can manage just over 20lbs with a standard 28mm ball head.
