- Haru, a schoolgirl bored by her ordinary routine, saves the life of an unusual cat, and suddenly her world is transformed beyond anything she's ever imagined. Her good deed is rewarded with a flurry of presents, including gift-wrapped mice, and one very shocking proposal of marriage - to the Cat's King's son! Haru embarks on an unexpected journey to the Kingdom of Cats where her eyes are opened to a whole other world and her destiny is uncertain. Miyazaki often draws inspiration from children books. Good example is Ponyo which is inspired by Little Mermaid but at end he makes something unique and wonderful of it.
I got more of a Labyrinth vibe when I first watched it, but yeah, they all tend to follow a fairly similar arc: A young girl dreams of running off to a fantasy world to escape her mundane troubles in the real world, eventually learning to find a healthy balance between imagination and reality.

I haven’t seen this but I think I will watch it. This trailer gives me Nutcracker vibe. With the dashing guy who looks suspiciously like a toy saving the heroine. It looks super cute.
BTW if anyone hasn’t seen the cartoon version of The Nutcracker Prince by Warner Brothers it’s worth watching. It’s not as good as Ghibli but still good. The voice actor for the Prince, Keifer Sutherland was really good.

He is definitely looking and behaving more like a human.
He has fingers instead of paws, propably normal feets as well, is ALWAYS fully clothed and does not really behave like a cat, more like a human.

I saw Kikis Delivery Service on Film 4 UK too haven't watched that film since I was 3
The only problem I have this movie... IT'S TOO SHORT! It should've gone for 75 minutes longer than it did. And I often felt that the scenes were too rushed. Like Haru having have at least 24 hours o come to grips with being a cat It's a great film that should've had it's moments explored more. And Haru is such funny, cute character, she needs more time to show that.

I believe that they didn’t have enough time to flesh out the characters. I didn’t really feel the change that Haru went through, it kinda just happened. And it seemed a bit too easy to get out of the Cat Kingdom as well. And there is one main reason. GIVE ME MORE BARONNNNNN. WE NEED MEN LIKE HIM. I loved the movie because of its characters not its plot. It didn’t get a chance for character and story development in that short timeframe. If it was longer, it would probably be my favourite anime (after whisper of the heart hehe)

You're right. Aoi Hiiragi made both manga, while Miyazaki and Reiko Yoshida made each script. Lune, Moon, Muta, Baron and more should be the "fault" of Hiiragi (anyone've read her manga?).

A fact a lot of people aren't aware of is that the movie is based on a manga that was very popular, however, between the movie and manga, a lot of things were changed, like... Yuki, instead of being an abandoned stray that Haru fed, she was Haru's pet cat that tragically passed and the Kingdom of Cats being an afterlife for cats, designs for half of the characters were different too like The Baron's and Prince Lune. Lune was also very different in the manga compared to the movie. However both versions are good and I hope people read the manga as well!

I just found a super cool movie theater that's playing all of studio ghibli's movies over the next couple of months. I haven't seen this yet but my daughter's into cats. So I'm gonna take her to see it when it plays. I just love that I have an option to see movies that I missed and/or didn't get a theatrical release in the first place...awesome. They even have both dubbed and subbed versions

When it comes to fantasy films it's a lovely, lovely film and I feel fortunate that I got to see it.
It seems like it's not often remarked upon but does anyone else think that Yuki is the namesake for "The Cat Returns" herself? After all, she returns to help Haru after all that time, it seems logical.

I've read a theory which stated that "the cat" in "The Cat Returns" can refer to several cats in the movie. It can refer to Muta and how he returns to the Cat Kingdom after being away for so long. It can refer to Prince Lune himself who returns after finding a gift for Yuki. It can refer to Yuki herself, of course, and it can also refer to The Baron since he was in Whisper of the Heart and now appears in this film. The original Japanese title actually translates to "The Cat's Repayment", not "The Cat Returns" so I suppose the English title caused a lot of speculation among English-speaking viewers.
That seems to make sense. Thanks for that clarification in some areas ^_^
