I used to teach wardrobing and this is just the way people shopped for clothes: a red blouse here, a pink paisley scarf there, a pair of black and white houndstooth checked pants that were on sale. But they didn't have an outfit. Exactly the same idea. Think outfits. Think meals! You can always mix and match later.
Ooooh , when I started stockpiling back in late 2019, I bought things my family doesn’t usually eat. I was thinking well, I’ll stock up on certain things because if they had too they would eat it. Now, I have things going past their Best Buy date and I we wont eat so I gave a lot to a food bank which is good ,but I learned to only stockpile what we eat and to eat what we stockpile. Finally I am more discerning about what I stockpile. Thank you for your videos, I’ve learned so much!
What you say is best except I'm on a keto diet. Nearly all stockpiling is carbs. The good news in an emergency I wont be worried about a diet. And although I don't eat rice and noodles I like it just fine. Just have no way to rotate it so it better be set or 25 years. Got a funny feeling it'll all be used within 5 the way we are choosing to run civ.
@@badnomad357 I have a friend who is Keto also. She stocks up on canned meats and veggies and fats. As well as some protein powders. Of course if food was scarce the Keto would go out the window to survive. Everyone can just go the best they can.
I feel like you are specifically speaking to me when you said "oh this looks good, oh thats on sale" i cant stand myself with all this food i have from panic buying that i am struggling to use.
You are not alone! Myself and many others are in the same situation. But looking back now I’ve learned some lessons so I’m making some changes and adjustments as I move forward🤗👍🏻
I have 2 teens that are still extremely picky eaters. One more than the other. So we rotate though the same meals on a weekly to bi- weekly basis. They don't get that " food fatigue". I've learned from experience, to make sure to stock meals they will readily eat and enjoy. When I'm shopping (to stock), I buy the entire meal. Ex: if I buy pasta, I will grab a can of chicken and jar of Alfredo sauce to go with it. If I get chicken nuggets ( my daughter's request today), I make sure I have bbq sauce and her specific brand of Mac & cheese to go with them. I learned to only stock what I know they will eat for certain. I recently discovered that my daughter doesn't like grilled cheese unless she has tomato soup to dip it in, but she won't eat the soup that's left when the sandwich is gone. Apparently, tomato soup is literally only a condiment for grilled cheese sandwiches in this household. So, That's fun..lol. I froze the leftover soup for next time. I've decided, this isn't the best time for me to be trying to get them to be more adventurous with their food. My son found a new recipe he wanted to try making this past week. I went and bought a bunch of ingredients we would never otherwise use, nobody liked it. Wasted a lot of money on that experiment. The struggle is real. Until I'm comfortable with the amount of meals I have back stocked, I'm sticking to the tried and true winners.
You’ve made some excellent points here… Especially when you have people that are picky eaters and fussy. I totally understand with having a son who is extremely picky mostly I would say due to his autism and afraid of trying new things. But I get it. I’m also myself rather picky and fussy so I can completely understand. It’s great to try new things and it’s always a good thing but until you have people ready to jump in and try the things it can be expensive and a waste also. We love to make grilled cheese and dip it in the tomato soup so I guess that would be considered a condiment here too… Lol
I get what you're saying. This is a lesson learned over decades of prepping and the main reason I only stockpile basic ingredients, while ensuring basic items are prepped in advance of the munchies. But, forgive me, I actually saw two interesting meals in the first five items. I'm channeling my Depression era frugal grandmothers now. Pancake mix is not just for pancakes. A corn casserole made with some of the pancake mix, plus the can of corn, using the can water and a bit of mustard to add flavor--not a lot. Then bake gently in a frying pan until done, served with the can of tomato soup. If you have scallions regrowing in the windowsill, add that, too. As an experiment, I'd make "pasta" from the other half of the pancake mix, or some thin crepes. There is a jar of pasta sauce crying out for something. Pancake mix has protein. The pasta may be pillowy due to the baking powder, but it would be more than edible. Or, extend the soup with the pasta sauce, the can of corn, and add diced carrots that may be languishing in the produce drawer. Eat with biscuits made from the pancake mix. My family will eat and enjoy anything made with love. Everyone is involved in budgeting, meal planning, cooking, and cleanup. So they have an understanding of how to use the stockpile if something happens to me.
People could get together for a "food exchange" party. Bring what you can't use or need if it doesn't go with what else you have and trade it for what will.
Years ago we actually did something similar to that for a food drive…it was hilarious we threw a can goods party dinner…everyone one brought two or more cans…after dinner were drew # We had all the cans on a table. # 1 picked the can they want to take home…#2 went next. They could take a can or steal what # 1 has and 1 would choose again….and so on. The host would provide a couple real nice (lol) can goods….at the end of the round you could keep what you had or donate it.. it was rallying fun and we got a lot for donations
How exactly do you fix it. My son is sooo wanting me to fix some but really have know idea how to use. Any receipt or ideas would be most appreciated 😊 thanks
I only saute some onion in the frying pan and then add the hash. It's salty enough, so I only add a little pepper. I add a little butter to the cream style corn when I heat it up.
We’ve always done corn beef hash fried up in a frying pan and tilt crisps up on one side and then we flip it over. We just added it with a side of toast and some fried eggs and my husband absolutely loves it.
Something I started this last summer was investing in a few dehydrators-I found two of them on Facebook marketplace, and let me tell you, we are more than stocked and prepared on all our 'greens' and every other veggie you can begin to imagine, and you'd be amazed at how much you can start with, just from what's in your freezer right now. Fresh produce here in Southern Colorado has become inedible due to how fast it now spoils, so dehydrating them all and making powders out of them has added greatly to our nutrient intake, especially in the winter months when fresh produce is out of the equation. I also highly suggest investing in some good quality spices, as that will make the difference between a canned meal being edible or not with very little initial investment and add as you are able. I am an old school cook and make everything from scratch and basics, and there are many channels on depression era cooking that every cook should know-especially in these times of scarcity and more on the horizon...🙏
I’m in love with my dehydrator! Somethings I’ve tried and failed to such as broccoli… But I think that’s about the only thing that hasn’t really turned out well. I love having the actual vegetable or fruit itself and or than making powders out of it as well.
You are right. Cooking from scratch let's us use up everything we have by knowing how to create meals out of simple ingredients. I also like to "cook from scraps". That is, using up food before it is wasted. I even save pasta water to make mystery soup. The starch in the pasta water acts as a slight thickener and nothing is wasted. Today we'll have chicken-vegetable-chickpea-collard green soup served over roasted sweet potatoes, with homemade biscuits and a fresh spinach salad. The fresh spinach is growing indoors in some planters by the sliding glass doors. Sweet potatoes are a hardy winter storage vegetable.

👍💕😍
Uhhhh ....I eat sauce over egg noodles ijs
Creamed corn, some diced cooked, potatoes, onion powder, just a touch of garlic powder, little milk as needed - heat together, garnish with crumbed bacon (or browned, diced ham, spam, etc) -- great cold, rainy/snowy day comfort food. Only takes a few minutes and almost no effort. 😊
Sounds like an absolutely delicious recipe!
Corn chowder!
@@karenkoerner6015 yeah! The quick version. It's pretty good for prefab.
