This wonderful mentality has been lost. My in-laws are 87 and still live like this. Thankfully, my hubby is the oldest and gleaned this from his parents and grandparents. Hubby can fix just about anything and has kept our cars, appliances, etc going until we absolutely have to replace an item.
Wow, that is a great topic, I needed to hear that. I used to be the spender in the family, I just spent without thinking, we didn't have a budget, my husband doesn't have money managing skills, and I always wondered why we were in so much debt. About a year ago I "woke up" and took charge of our finances. It was a shock to see how much we spent! For example, we are a family of 3 and we spent more than $2000 on food a month! I have managed to reduce our food shopping to $800-900 a month and working on reducing it further. My first step was tracking everything, then budgeting. I still feel like a child who wants things NOW sometimes but I know I want to live debt free and have financial security MORE. It took my husband time to be on board, he was happy I am in charge of the finances, one less thing for him to do, but he would still say "it only costs xy, it's not that much" about many things that are not necessities. It's a journey for both of us and we are not perfect, but we are making progress.
2k per month? That's over 650 dollars per person! I guess I'm more frugal than i thought. It is remarkable that you got it down to 900 per month! Good for you. I'll have to try to reign my husband in from buying things "just in case we need them one day".

I’m the only one being frugal as far as I can tell. I’m always recycling bottles and cans that I find, as well as other things that I think others can use to keep them out of the landfills…So many people at my job go on multiple expensive holidays as well as having their food shipped into them each day via apps…I once told a coworker that the most upgraded item I had in my home at the time was my iPhone, even though it’s a refurbished iPhone 8. That coworker laughed herself silly because she has all the latest, most expensive gadgets in her house! None of that matters to me; if that’s the kind of life others want to have, that’s up to them. I like living frugally!

I had someone come to my house. Aparfnuly they thought it would be bigger and "grander". Nope, it suits us. Mortgage free. We had the extension built to our specification, to hold us and three bassets and my kitchen. That's where we live. It includes underfloor gas heating and a utility with a shower and floor drain, that is refered to as the girl bassets boudoir. We don't have fancy holidays, drive a dependable older car, etc etc. I save up for big items,and take a lot of time making sure it is good value and good lasting quality. It's more than enough, and we live well within our means.
My husband Bryn and I met and married later in life when each of our kids were grown up. He quite readily admitted he wasn’t good at handling money, while I’d always had a tendency to be frugal. So I devised a budget that consisted of a joint account to which we both contributed equally and which was used to run the house, food, home maintenance and car. Then any remaining money we had (also equally divided) was for us to spend however we wanted. I kept track of our/my money in an accounts book which we nicknamed “The Great Book of Numbers” 😂 It was a fun way to manage our finances, catering for my need to be mindful about money while still allowing my husband to be in control of his own and we were both very happy with this arrangement. Sadly, Bryn passed away a couple of years ago but I still use the same principle to run my finances to this day. Thanks Jane for a great video. Your insights and suggestions always resonate with me.

This is a wonderful topic...especially when so many are struggling these days. It is hard to be "the frugal ones" sometimes....but I think it's harder, in the long run, to be the ones in over their heads who suffer so much stress and anxiety when times get tough. We try to strike a balance between planning for tomorrow and living happily today. Your channel does a great job of showing it can be done....and helps others to also achieve better results!
Dear Jane and michael couldnt do without you following you has changed my spending completely.The quality of my life is so much better now that i dont worry so much about money there is power in a budget!
Always thought-provoking. My friend is a great ambassador for frugality. He very publicly quotes Chanel's opinion that 'elegance is refusal' and says overspending is 'a little bit vulgar'. Everything he has is simple but elegant. We're part of a 'lunch club' and he keeps the spending within reason, though my more profligate friend sometimes gets annoyed. On the other side of the coin, I knew a woman whose husband was extremely controlling and very frugal. He wouldn't let her buy anything new, not even shoes for the children, and he controlled what she spent on food and every aspect of her life. It's called 'coercive control' now. So I suppose even good financial management can go too far!
Nice to know that you can live a beautiful life frugally. I'm moving to France soon and have been watching many videos. Most people who I watch on RUclips for advice and guidance are way more financially able than I. I am retired and have a modest pension which allows me to live comfortably in the US. I have a decent savings for emergencies but it is not in the 6 figures! I have only a few minor bills. Moving to France has been a dream of mine but I am often led to believe that it may not be possible due to not-enough- finances. I'm glad I discovered you and now see how it is possible for me to obtain my dream. Thanks. I'll subscribe and follow.

i was single and in debt and my workmates thought i was "stuck up and funny" because i didn''tgo on the payday P"""" "" - ididn't go because i didn't have the monet but also i didn't have the money for the dress wear- not talking fancy dresses but it was suchandsuch ashop for this and e-bay for that -it hurts but you have got to stick it out
I rejoice when I hear of someone who does not go out on payday partying, to a wedding or event they cannot afford. Who knows the so called "friends" might be up to their eyes in debt. Suit yourself, be your own Captain, get out of debt as soon as one can and enjoy the victory which will come.

Exactly. I get comments from others, but I'm the one retired at 56 with sinking funds for different things and a healthy emergency fund. I still splurge when I want to and thoroughly enjoy my life. My frugal simple life lol.
Very interesting Jane! It is important to offer friendliness to people we meet but we need to be discerning when it comes to those we offer friendship to!
I have a pretty good sixth sense in regard to people. I know almost instantly who I can let into my life and who to avoid like the plague. I have a friend who is the same way. She’s very frustrated that her daughter cannot see that some of the people in her life just use her. I told my friend that sadly she might not ever realize that someone is not good for her because she just can’t see the red flags!
Ive distanced myself from these types of people. They will drain you financially and spiritually. Theyre leading empty lives and self medicating on instant gratification and buried in debt.
Jane, one thing you said really hit home with me. Being careful about who you share your wins with. Be careful, indeed! Let's say you've got all those friends who Sing the Broke Song All Day Long.....you must pick and choose who you tell your goals & wins to. They always need something. I really like your channel and I have watched almost every Video. Thank you for sharing. Sometimes it is hard to stand your grounds when you are out with collegues. Last time I was in a big city with a small group of people and they wanted to have a coffe or softdrink in a cafe. I simply said, I wouldn‘t want to pay 4,50€ for a glass of Coke - After already spending 9€ for an ice-cream an hour ago. They all know I make enough money and that I‘m debt free. So they don‘t understand the concept of me being frugal.
I’ve found when you’re close to a family member and they’ve been financially challenged and I help them with a budget, most have stuck to and are happy they did.

I really understand what you mean about others not living frugally around you. I find it fascinating to observe the shopping trolleys of those around me in the supermarket, sometimes it makes me a little sad or a little angry but as you say it’s their problem not mine and I’ve learnt to let it go. I have the satisfaction of never having to worry over money.
I did have a problem with a non-frugal OH, but as he's getting older and thinking about retirement, this has provided the additional prompt needed to get on board with saving money. I am surrounded by very wealthy people - although a lot of that wealth may be based on loans and credit cards for all I know - and neighbours were surprised, possibly even a bit horrified, that we holidayed in the UK, the country we live in, especially as top choices around here are Portugal, Dubai, USA and Canada. We had planned France, but a combination of health and finances meant we had a much more relaxed and affordable holiday here instead. We had a lovely time, visited places we'd never been to before, enjoyed the beauty of the Yorkshire Dales and Exmoor, enjoyed walking, time on the beach, picnics and getting wet (car picnics still a favourite, luckily!). We choose what suits us and I have no intention of justifying my choices to those who don't understand or don't want to know.
Such great advice and a logical assessment of just what being frugal is all about...great video again Jane and Mike :) I know only too well from some friends who are always trying to convince me to stray from my careful path of budgeting and watching the 'pennies'...whilst they seem to live from paycheck to paycheck...yet still don't understand the situation they are in! I don't waste food and use up leftovers as you suggest incorporating them into 'new' meals...they never eat leftovers and waste so much food it makes me wince! You can't convince them otherwise though....I can only sort for my family and let them keep making bad decisions (in my opinion) despite me initially trying to show them there is a different way of living. Consequently, we have money to treat ourselves when we have a birthday/anniversary, whereas they can't understand why they can't afford a night out. I love seeing you have new videos up and save them up for a binge viewing with a cuppa :)

Great topic & so true. I believe if people would be at least more mindful of the way they spend money, they wouldn’t always feel the need to be tied to a job constantly. Because being more mindful and respectful of your resources gives a person personal freedom that can’t be purchased with anything.
Dave Gow has a fantastic new book titled 'Strong Money' on exactly that topic of gaining financial freedom , as he did at a young age. Through saving , minimising spending plus appreciating the wonderful lives we have with all its benefits. It's an Australian book written for Australian conditions, however it's wise and philosophical words apply to us all. Really recommended Mary
Oh how this resonates! I can apply this to several people who don't understand the way we choose to live. They can make some throw away passive aggressive comments too. However, just quietly ask yourself, who has the savings pot, who isn't up to their eyes in debt any longer? Superb video and very encouraging for those of us who can be met with a certain push back for being frugal. I find being frugal teaches us to be thankful for the smaller things that can often be overlooked, finding pleasure in simpler things by not needing to spend,spend,spend to entertain ourselves. It teaches us creativity, problem solving, collaboration and teamwork, and a sense of being far more fulfilled. Living a frugal lifestyle removes the feverish pressure of consumerism and gently slows everything down, to where we appreciate what we already have rather than constantly searching for the next big thing. Still saving for my front door and nearly there. I meet my friend every other week and we go for a coffee, and when i spoke to her she said the scones had gone up to £3. 25p. I said to her ill buy two from M&S cost of £1 each you bring the butter and jam and we will sit in the the corner of the cafe with the coffee thats paid for and eat the scones aswell, saving £4 50.
I'd love to do the same thing, but our favorite coffee shop doesn't allow any outside feed to be brought in. I would love to buy just their coffee and eat food I've brought, but it isn't allowed. I do understand why the coffee shop made that rule because a lot of people weren't buying anything at all and were just using their shop as a place to meet. What a shame that happened. Diane
I would say the majority of places would say that you can’t bring in your own food. Don’t be surprised if they ask you not to do that and possibly leave. Why not get the m and s scones and meet up at each other’s houses- even better make your own. I’ve made scone in the air fryer, saves on heating up the oven and takes about 10 mins.
For a treat we share a large cappuccino in Costa. I take a travel mug so we get two beans as it’s now 10 coffee beans needed for the free one. We also take a snack or biscuit in with us as their food is mass produced, tasteless and very expensive. We have never been challenged.
Living in a household with wildly differing views on frugality, saving and debt reduction is my single greatest challenge to a thrifty frugal life. Many thoughts and worries have to be kept to myself to keep household peace but I'm going to keep carrying on as you said.
One of my core sayings is "Will you be sorry you did, or sorry you didn't?" For example, will you be sorry that you put your seatbelt on and slowed down, or will you be sorry that you didn't. I often apply the same thinking to spending. Another trick my mother taught me was to assess how many hours you had to work to buy something - and that's after tax. Realizing I'd have to work many hours for something that I WANTED, rather than NEEDED, made it easier to say NO. Stay strong - you're doing the right thing!!
This is a very important topic! Being frugal doesn't come naturally to me-- I struggle with it with the help of my very frugal husband. But it's ever so much harder when friends who make much more money than we do invite us to do things that are outside our budget. How to decline without giving offense gets tricky. I have to say your budgeting topics are extremely helpful and relevant if not the best I have come across RUclips. I totally understand the idea of putting a positive spin on the saving and budget plan where maybe too much focus on the already spent vs goal achieved or left to spend can be seen as nagging and that maybe sharing wins and the process of saving and budgeting can be handled judgemental if you tell the wrong person. Really appreciate the advice.
I have a friend that overspends and takes a lot of time deciding what to buy at a general store,,it seems like it is more like she needs to justify her purchase , I do not judge Her at all, she is a Great friend to me ,,I on the other hand can very quickly decide what I need , my friend try’s to convince me to buy the item, but I have learned not to ask her opinion ,😊😊 I take a bit longer on choosing food to get the best deal,, like today I found a weasel rake brand new for $10 on FB marketplace , in store $40. And a free IKEA wine rake I turned into a shoe holder ,,, 😊😊 it can be fun being frugal,,😊 None of my friends ever tease me they ask me ,where did you find these items ,,they respect me for being me ❤❤
My husband and I are retired, debt and mortgage free and a good retirement. Years ago, we had a friend move in with us to help her as she got back on track after a divorce. She bought a car she could not afford and would go out shopping a lot. I tried to talk to her about saving and investing and she was not interested. Her response was something like she would do it when she had more money. Fast forward about thirty years and we are no longer friends, but I have heard she is still struggling and her life has had a lot of drama. Well, at least she is no longer looking to us to help her. There is nothing better than having financial peace and a deep pantry.

Equally I get tired of hearing people complain about being “skint” when they’re actually so wasteful and think absolutely nothing of spending £100+ on a night out, high-end brands etc. It’s actually insulting to those who are genuinely struggling with actual poverty. I enjoy watching your videos. At present, I don’t have much choice to go to places other than medical appointments by community transport after new hip surgery as I’m not allowed to drive - doctors orders - for at least six weeks. Really looking forward to being able to walk further. Today I walked upstairs five steps up with the right foot, five steps down with the left foot. Internal stitches & letting muscles get slowly stronger. Really looking forward to sleeping on my side - doctors orders to sleep on my back for at least six weeks. Things I wanted to do before, I don’t now - going out on the town. Really looking forward to walking to the park or river or beach. Excitement of the day was calling out to my chooks upstairs & one calling out to me in reply. It came over to the top fence to say hello. I agree, real friends will visit if they can. Today the secondhand kettle wouldn’t turn off, so I got the coffee machine out & made coffee and will try using it for making tea & just hot water. It could be a bit tricky filling a hot water bottle but will try. Where there is a will, there is a way.
Hi Jane, great video as always. It's the old choice, you can either spend money to look like you are wealthy or not spend money to actually be wealthy. Paying off debt, saving money gives you peace of mind and life choices that having shiny things and crippling debt doesn't. You have peace of mind through living a better way, than a life of rampant consumerism. I have found that the further on the frugal journey you are, the more you and your family can actually see the benefits of living in this way. My husband was wary at the beginning and now has totally come around. I am actually stunned how he now looks forward to going over our monthly budget, which I thought was absolutely impossible. What changed was when I laid out where we need to be to retire and each monthly budget shows we are working towards our joint goal. Jane, you are so inspiring without being judgmental of the non-frugals out there. Both my husband and I are frugal in different ways. One thing about sharing your frugal successes. You are quite right--be careful who you share that with for another reason. Some folks (a small but annoying percentage) get the idea they've won the lottery because they suspect you have a lot of cash or can get it and they think you can/should give or lend it to them.
A well thought out and inspiring chat, Jane. We don't all think or live the same, but we can take the principles of frugal living and apply them to our lives, and strive towards greater acceptance of where we are and what we really need, should we choose to do so. Enjoy you very much. We're been out of debt for a long time. I have a full pantry and savings. My sister in law thinks I'm crazy because we save and we don't use credit cards. She said she just wants to save money for cruises. They just got back from one and put it on a credit card. Everyone here in the states are losing their jobs. I would be worried sick if I was her.
In the words of the indomitable Taylor Swift, "Haters gonna hate!" LOL, I have learnt to keep my business my own and let people assume whatever they would like. The number of friends I have have dropped to single digits and I am not bothered at all! Going to brunch for $100 in NYC, no thanks come over and I will make frittatas, french toast and roasted potatoes for $20! Frugal people unite!
My work colleagues have often asked me on work nights out .the answer is always "it's appreciated you asked ,thanks so much but I can't" Who wants to wake up the next day with a hangover and an empty wallet?
Going out for drinks is what sank me so many times. It's an expensive unhealthy habit. And that's precisely what happens the next day. You feel horrible, are non productive and it's drained your finances. It's a horrible cycle yet so many do this and refuse to change as it's so normalized
What'sthe diffrence of being frugal to being stingy. Because that's always somthing i don't like when people are stingy. 😅 For me it's horror when i think i'm stingy but i like to be frugal becuse i have to be frugal. I hope you understund what i mean. I am accused of nagging on pretty much a daily basis by my husband but I don’t care. I am bound and determined to get myself out of the enormous debt I am in after starting over at age 52. My accomplishment for today was getting a saucepan that I needed and I paid for it with an Amazon gift card I had gotten from surveys I do. Hello I'm Robin, an American, a widow, low income, early retiree, both debt and mortgage free living a frugal and happy life in Kentucky USA.😅 Was told just last night by my sister that i am obviously depressed because I NEVER leave my house and do things or accept invitations. I'm happy at home doing projects, go out when i want and need to.
Misery loves company.ost people are lemmings and can not think for themselves. They have a herd mentality and do not understand those of us that do not. Also it threatens them. Many are drowning in debt but won't do a thing about it.
I’m a frugal, no debt person but my 55 year old daughter does not grasp the frugal concept no matter what I try to advise her about how to be frugal. She refuses to “deprive herself” of things she wants but doesn’t really need. It’s very disheartening.
It’s the opposite at my house. I’m the 56 year old daughter that is frugal. My 80 year old mom just doesn’t grasp the concept that she doesn’t have the money. Lol
My husband and I live in the same town as all my in-laws. The two of us and my mother-in-law are frugal but his four brothers and their families are not, but after 20 years they have accepted that we are and that’s not going to change. So they invite us over for dinner or no expense things but not for things they know we wouldn’t like.
I am helping my youngest adult son set up a new budget with a savings plan this very afternoon, since he will have new hospital bill co pays to cover $$$. Zucchini tonight stuffed with yellow squash, peppers, tomatoes, spring onion, with a topping of breadcrumbs and a bit of grated cheese.
What do you do when you have a friend who has a private income who seems to think she is better because of it - She actually talks down to me. I am fast realising she is not a friend but I am finding it hard to even be with her in passing. Maybe I should say something - that I feel patronised or just ignore her.
I’m over 60 now so my filter has widened somewhat, I’d still try saying something like “look, I’m not here for an argument nor a discussion, but do you realize you continuously talk down to me” and give a couple of examples, then advise you are finding her company a little too much so you’re going to pass for the future…you won’t be loosing anything or you may feel better about yourself by sticking up for yourself.😊
That's not a friend. Break off any ties with them immediately. Once in a while , I believe, we have to do a bit of housekeeping as far as people in our lives are concerned. It lightens our lives, spirits and helps us to keep moving up and forward, knowing we are doing the right thing, and the very best we can. Free yourself from this negative person.
I can't stand the "it's alright for some" attitude. Once someone said that to me when I got a new job, so I pointed out I'd invested a huge amount of money, time and effort to improve my further education and in turn get a better job. It's all about prioritising use of money and time.
A great pice of advice I received many years ago was to not let other people spend my money.

This is a wonderful topic...especially when so many are struggling these days. It is hard to be "the frugal ones" sometimes....but I think it's harder, in the long run, to be the ones in over their heads who suffer so much stress and anxiety when times get tough. We try to strike a balance between planning for tomorrow and living happily today. Your channel does a great job of showing it can be done....and helps others to also achieve better results!

Always thought-provoking. My friend is a great ambassador for frugality. He very publicly quotes Chanel's opinion that 'elegance is refusal' and says overspending is 'a little bit vulgar'. Everything he has is simple but elegant. We're part of a 'lunch club' and he keeps the spending within reason, though my more profligate friend sometimes gets annoyed. On the other side of the coin, I knew a woman whose husband was extremely controlling and very frugal. He wouldn't let her buy anything new, not even shoes for the children, and he controlled what she spent on food and every aspect of her life. It's called 'coercive control' now. So I suppose even good financial management can go too far!

Nice to know that you can live a beautiful life frugally. I'm moving to France soon and have been watching many videos. Most people who I watch on RUclips for advice and guidance are way more financially able than I. I am retired and have a modest pension which allows me to live comfortably in the US. I have a decent savings for emergencies but it is not in the 6 figures!
I have only a few minor bills. Moving to France has been a dream of mine but I am often led to believe that it may not be possible due to not-enough- finances. I'm glad I discovered you and now see how it is possible for me to obtain my dream. Thanks. I'll subscribe and follow.

I have a pretty good sixth sense in regard to people. I know almost instantly who I can let into my life and who to avoid like the plague. I have a friend who is the same way. She’s very frustrated that her daughter cannot see that some of the people in her life just use her. I told my friend that sadly she might not ever realize that someone is not good for her because she just can’t see the red flags!
We need to be very discerning when dealing with others who may be very clever in off loading their problems on others.
Ive distanced myself from these types of people. They will drain you financially and spiritually. Theyre leading empty lives and self medicating on instant gratification and buried in debt.

Sometimes it is hard to stand your grounds when you are out with collegues. Last time I was in a big city with a small group of people and they wanted to have a coffe or softdrink in a cafe. I simply said, I wouldn‘t want to pay 4,50€ for a glass of Coke - After already spending 9€ for an ice-cream an hour ago. They all know I make enough money and that I‘m debt free. So they don‘t understand the concept of me being frugal.
They don’t have to understand and you owe no one an explanation
I’ve found when you’re close to a family member and they’ve been financially challenged and I help them with a budget, most have stuck to and are happy they did.

I really understand what you mean about others not living frugally around you. I find it fascinating to observe the shopping trolleys of those around me in the supermarket, sometimes it makes me a little sad or a little angry but as you say it’s their problem not mine and I’ve learnt to let it go. I have the satisfaction of never having to worry over money.

I did have a problem with a non-frugal OH, but as he's getting older and thinking about retirement, this has provided the additional prompt needed to get on board with saving money. I am surrounded by very wealthy people - although a lot of that wealth may be based on loans and credit cards for all I know - and neighbours were surprised, possibly even a bit horrified, that we holidayed in the UK, the country we live in, especially as top choices around here are Portugal, Dubai, USA and Canada. We had planned France, but a combination of health and finances meant we had a much more relaxed and affordable holiday here instead. We had a lovely time, visited places we'd never been to before, enjoyed the beauty of the Yorkshire Dales and Exmoor, enjoyed walking, time on the beach, picnics and getting wet (car picnics still a favourite, luckily!). We choose what suits us and I have no intention of justifying my choices to those who don't understand or don't want to know.

I know only too well from some friends who are always trying to convince me to stray from my careful path of budgeting and watching the 'pennies'...whilst they seem to live from paycheck to paycheck...yet still don't understand the situation they are in! I don't waste food and use up leftovers as you suggest incorporating them into 'new' meals...they never eat leftovers and waste so much food it makes me wince! You can't convince them otherwise though....I can only sort for my family and let them keep making bad decisions (in my opinion) despite me initially trying to show them there is a different way of living. Consequently, we have money to treat ourselves when we have a birthday/anniversary, whereas they can't understand why they can't afford a night out.

Great topic & so true. I believe if people would be at least more mindful of the way they spend money, they wouldn’t always feel the need to be tied to a job constantly. Because being more mindful and respectful of your resources gives a person personal freedom that can’t be purchased with anything.

Dave Gow has a fantastic new book titled 'Strong Money' on exactly that topic of gaining financial freedom , as he did at a young age.
Through saving , minimising spending plus appreciating the wonderful lives we have with all its benefits.
It's an Australian book written for Australian conditions, however it's wise and philosophical words apply to us all. Really recommended

Oh how this resonates! I can apply this to several people who don't understand the way we choose to live. They can make some throw away passive aggressive comments too. However, just quietly ask yourself, who has the savings pot, who isn't up to their eyes in debt any longer? Superb video and very encouraging for those of us who can be met with a certain push back for being frugal. I find being frugal teaches us to be thankful for the smaller things that can often be overlooked, finding pleasure in simpler things by not needing to spend,spend,spend to entertain ourselves. It teaches us creativity, problem solving, collaboration and teamwork, and a sense of being far more fulfilled. Living a frugal lifestyle removes the feverish pressure of consumerism and gently slows everything down, to where we appreciate what we already have rather than constantly searching for the next big thing. Thank you for your wonderful videos, wise and insightful.

Still saving for my front door and nearly there. I meet my friend every other week and we go for a coffee, and when i spoke to her she said the scones had gone up to £3. 25p. I said to her ill buy two from M&S cost of £1 each you bring the butter and jam and we will sit in the the corner of the cafe with the coffee thats paid for and eat the scones aswell, saving £4 50.
What a great idea and you still get to enjoy a frugal day out with a friend!
I'd love to do the same thing, but our favorite coffee shop doesn't allow any outside feed to be brought in. I would love to buy just their coffee and eat food I've brought, but it isn't allowed. I do understand why the coffee shop made that rule because a lot of people weren't buying anything at all and were just using their shop as a place to meet. What a shame that happened. Diane
I would say the majority of places would say that you can’t bring in your own food. Don’t be surprised if they ask you not to do that and possibly leave. Why not get the m and s scones and meet up at each other’s houses- even better make your own. I’ve made scone in the air fryer, saves on heating up the oven and takes about 10 mins.
For a treat we share a large cappuccino in Costa. I take a travel mug so we get two beans as it’s now 10 coffee beans needed for the free one. We also take a snack or biscuit in with us as their food is mass produced, tasteless and very expensive. We have never been challenged.

Living in a household with wildly differing views on frugality, saving and debt reduction is my single greatest challenge to a thrifty frugal life. Many thoughts and worries have to be kept to myself to keep household peace but I'm going to keep carrying on as you said.

One of my core sayings is "Will you be sorry you did, or sorry you didn't?" For example, will you be sorry that you put your seatbelt on and slowed down, or will you be sorry that you didn't. I often apply the same thinking to spending. Another trick my mother taught me was to assess how many hours you had to work to buy something - and that's after tax. Realizing I'd have to work many hours for something that I WANTED, rather than NEEDED, made it easier to say NO. Stay strong - you're doing the right thing!!

I have to say your budgeting topics are extremely helpful and relevant if not the best I have come across RUclips. I totally understand the idea of putting a positive spin on the saving and budget plan where maybe too much focus on the already spent vs goal achieved or left to spend can be seen as nagging and that maybe sharing wins and the process of saving and budgeting can be handled judgemental if you tell the wrong person. Really appreciate the advice.

I have a friend that overspends and takes a lot of time deciding what to buy at a general store,,it seems like it is more like she needs to justify her purchase , I do not judge Her at all, she is a Great friend to me ,,I on the other hand can very quickly decide what I need , my friend try’s to convince me to buy the item, but I have learned not to ask her opinion ,😊😊 I take a bit longer on choosing food to get the best deal,, like today I found a weasel rake brand new for $10 on FB marketplace , in store $40. And a free IKEA wine rake I turned into a shoe holder ,,, 😊😊 it can be fun being frugal,,😊 None of my friends ever tease me they ask me ,where did you find these items ,,they respect me for being me ❤❤

My husband and I are retired, debt and mortgage free and a good retirement. Years ago, we had a friend move in with us to help her as she got back on track after a divorce. She bought a car she could not afford and would go out shopping a lot. I tried to talk to her about saving and investing and she was not interested. Her response was something like she would do it when she had more money. Fast forward about thirty years and we are no longer friends, but I have heard she is still struggling and her life has had a lot of drama. Well, at least she is no longer looking to us to help her. There is nothing better than having financial peace and a deep pantry.
Excellent insights to share. Equally I get tired of hearing people complain about being “skint” when they’re actually so wasteful and think absolutely nothing of spending £100+ on a night out, high-end brands etc.
It’s actually insulting to those who are genuinely struggling with actual poverty.

I enjoy watching your videos. At present, I don’t have much choice to go to places other than medical appointments by community transport after new hip surgery as I’m not allowed to drive - doctors orders - for at least six weeks. Really looking forward to being able to walk further. Today I walked upstairs five steps up with the right foot, five steps down with the left foot. Internal stitches & letting muscles get slowly stronger. Really looking forward to sleeping on my side - doctors orders to sleep on my back for at least six weeks. Things I wanted to do before, I don’t now - going out on the town. Really looking forward to walking to the park or river or beach. Excitement of the day was calling out to my chooks upstairs & one calling out to me in reply. It came over to the top fence to say hello. I agree, real friends will visit if they can. Today the secondhand kettle wouldn’t turn off, so I got the coffee machine out & made coffee and will try using it for making tea & just hot water. It could be a bit tricky filling a hot water bottle but will try. Where there is a will, there is a way.

It's the old choice, you can either spend money to look like you are wealthy or not spend money to actually be wealthy.
Paying off debt, saving money gives you peace of mind and life choices that having shiny things and crippling debt doesn't.
You have peace of mind through living a better way, than a life of rampant consumerism.
I have found that the further on the frugal journey you are, the more you and your family can actually see the benefits of living in this way. My husband was wary at the beginning and now has totally come around. I am actually stunned how he now looks forward to going over our monthly budget, which I thought was absolutely impossible.
What changed was when I laid out where we need to be to retire and each monthly budget shows we are working towards our joint goal.

Jane, you are so inspiring without being judgmental of the non-frugals out there. Both my husband and I are frugal in different ways. One thing about sharing your frugal successes. You are quite right--be careful who you share that with for another reason. Some folks (a small but annoying percentage) get the idea they've won the lottery because they suspect you have a lot of cash or can get it and they think you can/should give or lend it to them.

She said she just wants to save money for cruises. They just got back from one and put it on a credit card. Everyone here in the states are losing their jobs. I would be worried sick if I was her.
In the words of the indomitable Taylor Swift, "Haters gonna hate!" LOL, I have learnt to keep my business my own and let people assume whatever they would like. The number of friends I have have dropped to single digits and I am not bothered at all! Going to brunch for $100 in NYC, no thanks come over and I will make frittatas, french toast and roasted potatoes for $20! Frugal people unite!

Going out for drinks is what sank me so many times. It's an expensive unhealthy habit. And that's precisely what happens the next day. You feel horrible, are non productive and it's drained your finances. It's a horrible cycle yet so many do this and refuse to change as it's so normalized

I am accused of nagging on pretty much a daily basis by my husband but I don’t care.
I am bound and determined to get myself out of the enormous debt I am in after starting over at age 52.
My accomplishment for today was getting a saucepan that I needed and I paid for it with an Amazon gift card I had gotten from surveys I do.

Misery loves company.ost people are lemmings and can not think for themselves. They have a herd mentality and do not understand those of us that do not. Also it threatens them. Many are drowning in debt but won't do a thing about it.

I’m a frugal, no debt person but my 55 year old daughter does not grasp the frugal concept no matter what I try to advise her about how to be frugal. She refuses to “deprive herself” of things she wants but doesn’t really need. It’s very disheartening.

It’s the opposite at my house. I’m the 56 year old daughter that is frugal. My 80 year old mom just doesn’t grasp the concept that she doesn’t have the money. Lol
My husband and I live in the same town as all my in-laws. The two of us and my mother-in-law are frugal but his four brothers and their families are not, but after 20 years they have accepted that we are and that’s not going to change. So they invite us over for dinner or no expense things but not for things they know we wouldn’t like.

I am helping my youngest adult son set up a new budget with a savings plan this very afternoon, since he will have new hospital bill co pays to cover $$$. Zucchini tonight stuffed with yellow squash, peppers, tomatoes, spring onion, with a topping of breadcrumbs and a bit of grated cheese.

What do you do when you have a friend who has a private income who seems to think she is better because of it - She actually talks down to me. I am fast realising she is not a friend but I am finding it hard to even be with her in passing. Maybe I should say something - that I feel patronised or just ignore her.

I’m over 60 now so my filter has widened somewhat, I’d still try saying something like “look, I’m not here for an argument nor a discussion, but do you realize you continuously talk down to me” and give a couple of examples, then advise you are finding her company a little too much so you’re going to pass for the future…you won’t be loosing anything or you may feel better about yourself by sticking up for yourself.😊
That's not a friend. Break off any ties with them immediately. Once in a while , I believe, we have to do a bit of housekeeping as far as people in our lives are concerned. It lightens our lives, spirits and helps us to keep moving up and forward, knowing we are doing the right thing, and the very best we can. Free yourself from this negative person.

I can't stand the "it's alright for some" attitude. Once someone said that to me when I got a new job, so I pointed out I'd invested a huge amount of money, time and effort to improve my further education and in turn get a better job. It's all about prioritising use of money and time.
