He's just puttin' little Ganesha through the paces 'cause Shiva's been watchin' over Parvati for so darn long, and he wants to be sure Ganesha's ready for the job, which is such a dad thing to do ( I mean, you ever been asked by your old man to go get some 'blinker fluid'?). Plus, Shiva wanted to hand Ganesha somethin' himself, ya know? Parvati gave him his body, so Shiva thought he'd pitch in with givin' him his head 'cause, well, while a mama nurtures the body, a papa gives a kid his smarts or "head."
It'd so great if Dr Svoboda can explain the symbolism behind these stories in detail. The story telling style was so captivating, I was completely hooked. Would love if you could turn this into a storytelling series. A story followed by the symbolism explication would help us laymen a lot.

And y'know, everyone figures only an elephant can handle an elephant in a brawl (like the movie Gumki). It's like a theme in Hindu texts-there's always some bad guy counterpart: like Hayasiras for Hayagriva, Mahashani for Shanishwara (who Vrishakapi, pretty much Hanuman, took down), Vali for Sugriva, and so on.

Same head of Ganesha cannot be placed because the Trishul had a boon from Mahadev that an attack from it will never be recovered.
