Buona sera, Ric! I'm watching this while at work because I'm so excited to be in Italy in a few weeks. Italy has hundreds if not thousands of these little towns, and they're all so beautiful. If I ever had the chance to move there I would have the hardest time to find a town to settle in. Thank you so much for providing great video all the time!

Impresionante lugar. Saludos a El Salvador y desearles una linda semana

Watching this from a beautiful city (not naming it, but it's not in Italy) with grand buildings. But I still am drawn to these small unknown Italian towns with their up and down small lanes. They have so much character. And little touches like the plants and cute nativity scenes and Madonnas make it more special. Just gazing out to the green countryside is also special. So Riccardo, thanks again for sharing your walks 🤗🙏

question: with the town's 1500 year history, along with other towns you have filmed. , i am fascinated by the walkways, stairs and rubble walls and the well laid walls. do you know whether the town keeps the same building patterns and restores them periodically or are the well kept architectural features relatively new. ? they look old. are the kept up from the old or new because of the drainage in the walkways etc. i do see the utility hook ups on the walls. just wondering how the town copes with time in staying the same or changing? any thought?
Interesting question actually Ellen. I can't speak directly about Roccantica, but for instance, in my little town south of Rome, most of the building are from the 13th century, some 16th, some were rebuilt over time over the previous ones due to earthquakes etc. The most recent were built in the 30s here after another earthquake. But I suspect that most are from that era, but perhaps built on pre-existing structures. The patterns I'm sure never changed and stayed the same. It's an interesting question that I hope some historian or some architects would answer better! I'm curious too actually
Happy to see you again dear Kalo! I thought the same Kalo , but then I found out here it could derive from the term "anticus" that in latin means "it stands in front" - hard to say . I always wanted to ask you... does your nick name relate to the Sator square? :)
@@StillWanderer Actually someone else has asked me the same question, a few years ago -and I had never heard of the sator square but now I know. Actually, as I am a bit of an opera buff it actually means "beautiful opera" -kalo is Greek for beauty and "arepo" is opera backwards. Being in Italy you probably know of the origins of opera in 16th century Florence when they were trying to revive ancient Greek plays and someone came up with the idea that the story was sung and not spoken. One of the inventors was the father of the famous scientist Galileo -his father Vincenzo was a musician and theoretician on the lute. Opera took off largely in Venice where it became a popular art form -there were up to 20 opera houses in Venice during the 18th century and the art form has become extremely influential with modern spin offs like the musical and when you think of it movies especially epics like "Lord of the Rings" are a form of opera -that orchestral music in the background and all that!
@@kaloarepo288 Ah now I understand the arepo word. Kalos... of course. Studied 8 years in classical school when I was a child/kid and ancient greek and latin were our main topics (these days they are considered like a waste of study and time unfortunately...) Indeed, the Opera and its history is fascinating and so rich. I'm definitely not an expert in this topic, as my main hobby is history (contemporary mostly) but history is history and a part also of this hobby in writing it in every tiny town. Near where I live was born Giovanni da Palestrina!
All dies traurig..

Bella giornata, benedetto Sole.

Wonderful video- thanks! Also, the intro piano music is beautiful- who is it?
Hello Mike, thanks and glad it was enjoyed it. That soundtrack is named "By the ash tree" by Snow MEadow
@@StillWanderer Thanks!
question: with the town's 1500 year history, along with other towns you have filmed. , i am fascinated by the walkways, stairs and rubble walls and the well laid walls. do you know whether the town keeps the same building patterns and restores them periodically or are the well kept architectural features relatively new. ? they look old. are the kept up from the old or new because of the drainage in the walkways etc. i do see the utility hook ups on the walls. just wondering how the town copes with time in staying the same or changing? any thought?
Interesting question actually Ellen. I can't speak directly about Roccantica, but for instance, in my little town south of Rome, most of the building are from the 13th century, some 16th, some were rebuilt over time over the previous ones due to earthquakes etc. The most recent were built in the 30s here after another earthquake. But I suspect that most are from that era, but perhaps built on pre-existing structures. The patterns I'm sure never changed and stayed the same. It's an interesting question that I hope some historian or some architects would answer better! I'm curious too actually
@@StillWanderer thank you. maybe some one will know
What's the Italian word for the little Marian shrines built into the walls?
We usually call them "Madonnine" , like Little Madonnas, or "icone" but it depends from region to region Andrew
Thanks! I don't think Google was every going to spit that out. 🙂
"Roccaantica" probably just means "ancient fortress" -as the word "rocca" refers to a fortress = usually on a hill.
Kalos... of course. Studied 8 years in classical school when I was a child/kid and ancient greek and latin were our main topics (these days they are considered like a waste of study and time unfortunately...)
Indeed, the Opera and its history is fascinating and so rich. I'm definitely not an expert in this topic, as my main hobby is history (contemporary mostly) but history is history and a part also of this hobby in writing it in every tiny town. Near where I live was born Giovanni da Palestrina!

Bellissima davvero Roccantica!
All dies traurig..
Richard
