Ingredients:
- 3 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 packet (2 teaspoons) active dry yeast
- 1teaspoons salt
- 1 cup of milk (about 110°F or 43°C)
- 1 tablespoon sugar (optional, for a slightly sweeter flavor)
- 1/2 cup of melted butter
- 1 egg
- 60ml sugar
Egg Wash ; 1egg, 3/4 cup of milk
Instructions:
1. Activate the Yeast:
- In a small bowl, combine the warm water and sugar (if using). Sprinkle the yeast over the warm water and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy. This indicates that the yeast is active.
2. Mix the Dough:
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. If you want to add olive oil or melted butter for extra flavor and moisture, do so now.
- Pour the activated yeast mixture into the flour mixture. Stir with a wooden spoon until a dough forms.
3. Knead the Dough:
- Flour a clean surface and turn the dough out onto it. Knead the dough for about 8-10 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic. You may need to add a bit more flour if the dough is too sticky.
4. First Rise:
- Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl and cover it with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap. Let it rise in a warm, draft-free place for about 1 hour or until it has doubled in size.
5. Punch Down and Shape:
- Once the dough has risen, punch it down to release any air bubbles. Turn it out onto a floured surface and shape it into a loaf or divide it into smaller portions for rolls.
6. Second Rise:
- Place the shaped dough onto a baking sheet or into a greased loaf pan. Cover it again and let it rise for another 30 minutes or till it doubled in size
7. Preheat and Bake:
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- If you'd like, you can brush the top of the dough with a bit of milk or water to achieve a golden crust.
- Bake the bread for about 25-30 minutes for rolls or 30-35 minutes for a loaf. The bread should sound hollow when tapped on the bottom and have a golden-brown crust.
8. Cool and Enjoy:
- Remove the bread from the oven and let it cool on a wire rack for at least 30 minutes before slicing.
Enjoy your homemade bread with your favorite toppings or as a side for soups and stews. Homemade bread is a delicious and satisfying treat!
