The most under-rated film of the last 50 years. Rollercoaster ride with an ending that is some how incredibly heart wrenching without being soppy. The film that made Gary Oldman a legend for me.
It's okay. Art of this calibre. Not everyone gets it. Not everyone has the intelligence to get it. Be happy you are in an exclusive club - you GET it.....
Incredible movie, criminally underrated-a true descendant of classic film noir. It has everything- great story, an outstanding performance from Oldman, and a fantastic score by Isham. This ending has to be one of the most heartbreaking ever, and it all comes achingly together in Oldman’s narration and that sax playing in the background-a man looking out at the self inflicted desolation of his life, hoping against hope that he might get just one more chance at redemption and knowing deep down that he will never get it-forever haunted by regret.
One of the most awesome scenes in cinema. You don't even have to have seen the entire film to get the emotion here. Also, Mark Isham is killing it in this scene. (Especially with the 'ticking clock' part).
One of the most heartbreaking scenes ever. The final line, "Cause even after all this, I bet she still loves me." It is so poignant. I have felt that before, loved the one who got away. You never get over that. You move on, but you never get over that.
"Ever since this world began, there ain't nothing sadder than...the long lost loser, looking for his gal, who got away". No one conveys that message as well as Sinatra . If anyone has experienced what you describe in your comment, Sinatra's reading of this line, at the end of the song, will put a lump in your throat... ruclips.net/video/lCxhcso4DU8/видео.html
This is truly the most heart-wrenching closing scene of a film that I have ever watched. The perfect mesh of great acting, awesome direction, incredibly deep music and extraordinary cinematography. When Natalie enters and they dance, the waterworks begin. And it is that final fade out over the desolate desert landscape that really gets you in the feels. It always makes me think "what if I lost my wife forever..." such a visceral impact that it takes your breath away...
Absolutely gut-wrenching. So beautifully filmed and that closing shot slowly going down the deserted highway with just one lone telephone pole. Just incredibly evocative.
Maybe someday she returns.............someday. After all, if in spite of the horrific, disgusting and self centered behavior we the audience have witnessed from this character and yet his plight can still leave a lump in our throat, a tear in the corner of our eye and a wish in our heart, perhaps Natalie can find grace in her cinematic world to become as we, the audience in this sadly forgotten film. So beautiful how nothing in this ending judges Jack. Not the Isham's music, not Oldman's performance, not Medak's underrated direction and not the cinematography (desolate yet heartbreakingly beautiful). All of the elements of cinema coming together to create a truly outstanding piece of Art. Sadly, greatness such as this is all to rare today.
What a sad, poetic and beautiful ending. To survive all that with a painful longing that (ironically perhaps) keeps him going. Part of him knows she’ll never return to him, but that little bit of hope, right out of Pandora’s box is enough for him not to hang it all up.
This ending makes me cry every time I watch it. Every single time. As the tears well up In his eyes as she fades, so do mine. After that last line, "Cause even after all this, I bet she still loves me." I lose it. Love loss hurts, forever.
The saddest ending of any movie I've ever seen. Oldman's performance, that score, it messes me up......love, whatever love is, it drags you to the grave.......
First time I saw this film the ending made me cry touched me very deeply. 20 years later it's impact is the exact same. Underrated. Gary oldman never been better
I remember watching this as a kid and it was so devastatingly beautiful. It haunted my soul. I was so young and it had my heart gripping. Then I watch this Korean film about these 3 guys that rob a casino (btw great movie a must watch) long story short the part of the ending had the same scene as this one were his long lost friend finds him in the shop and then disappears like Mona walking in the shop and fading away, and it reminded me so much of this movie Romeo Must Bleeding I couldn't remember the name but I knew it was Gary Oldman that said EVERYONE another epic scene that's unforgetable with Natalie Portman and french guy Assasin Leon the Professional. But it lead me to wanting to see this scence again and hear the jazz saxopone at the end my heart dropped it's so haungingtly beautiful to revisit again.Wowweee
" Maybe you think I'm ready to give up, but that ain't how it is. She could come walkin' through that door any day. Cos even after all of this...I bet she still loves me." Kills me every time
I have recommended this movie to a friend, an actress, foreign, who of course knows of Gary Oldman, but hasn't seen it. I sent this clip to give her a taste. I never realized so many others feel about this last scene as I do, until now, 30 years later. The love that got away, and the heartbreak that stays with you forever. I 'm an old man now, but this scene breaks my heart still. Maybe it's just because it was Annabella, who could get over her?
I just watched it again, whole movie last night. I cried hard. We have all been there one way or the other but this scene has happened to me in a very close way. Regret. The worst word in the dictionary... it just never leaves.... and still I wait..
Simply the best ending to the 90’s noir, and most noir. That it’s written by a woman makes it all the more bittersweet. The lesson: chasing after another life is the quickest way to lose the life in front of you.
"To tell you the story of an unlucky guy who fell in love with a hole in the ground, a ghost haunting his own grave". So many of us are that story, the holes may be different but we haunt the same graves............
@@joshua5555 True, but as bleak as the hauntingly beautiful ending is there is the slightest possibility of hope and there lies the magic of the film's ending and for us. For Jack, in Hope there is redemption as he has accepted his fate. Know that you are not judged and in the acceptance of the mistakes you've made there is Hope. Perhaps the truest tragedy are those who never realize what their lives had the possibilities to be, what they became and what they lost, you are not one of them.
When I was a teenager in th 90s , I remember a day I was watching MTV and Bram Stoker;'s Dracula actors interviews, at that time I did not know who was this guy Gary Oldman, and actually I just thought what a spoiled bastard, but then after a good 10 years passed and I was in my 30's ; I saw him again in certain movies again like ''Immortal Beloved '' , '' Leon ' , '' Rome0 Is Bleeding '' , '' State of Grace '' etc; and I just begun to adore him, his passionate acting, those screams of anger or his ruined and exhausted face like in this video at duration 2:21 .. always will my fav actor.
Best of Gary Oldman in his 30's..Man how I tried to be like him, and I have a longing for those times as an 50 years old now, this man is a great actor altough he lost these great mimics now, but he is a legend forever ..'' sometimes she stays little longer but not too often ..''
I love that the ending is deliberately ambiguous, that Nat is either dead or just moved on to a better life without him. I came away with the impression that she's dead though, which makes the heartbreak of this scene all the more poignant. No chance for reconciliation, just remorse, regret and utter emptiness. Wham bang. Roll credits. Oh yeah, one more thing: GARY OLDMAN ROCKS!
All those years ago this was the film that made me fall in love with him as an actor. This scene just hurts. Always the movie scenes of regret looking back I remember. Great film
The real thing that messed me up was not knowing whether Mona killed his wife or his wife left him for good. I only considered her being murdered because Mona went after his other girl and killed her.
I have this on Dvd. Mona did not get to do anything to Natalie. In the court room she said you will never get to touch or see her again. To me that means she will do it. she made other threats to him. That lead him to shoot and kill her. Because he did not want her to touch Natalie. Only My opinion.
pretty sure she dead...Mona's photo is missing in photo album, like she took it out when (she probably) ransacked his place...or does he remove it himself as he's looking back on the women he loved
I saw this movie as a kid and this scene haunted me for years because I couldn’t remember which movie it was from. I searched as many Sam Rockwell movies as I could with no luck, turns out Sam Rockwell looks a lot like Gary Oldman. Then I searched for movies starring Gary Olman and Debi Mazar, still no luck! I just by chance caught the movie on TV now! (I think I mixed up Annabella Sciorra and Debi Mazar because of the Jungle Fever connection). I just love this scene, it’s so sad.
This is so cool that this video was uploaded :) Although the mob aspect of the movie is ok, the story of him & his wife is overwhelming in the end. One of the most powerful endings that I've ever seen. Between Gary Oldmans' performance & the music of Mark Isham makes it a one-two punch. I was fighting back the tears.
Anyone else see this at younger age and knew it was phrophetic of own life especially the ending very heavy movie and hard to find crappy copy on RUclips somewhere, this a truly underated movie
Absolutely one of the best endings in a film! Oldman is great and so is the screenplay! Best morality tale to come down the pike in a long time! Wonderful!
Sometimes she stays a little bit longer. But not too often. 40's noir in a 80's movie. Love never dies. Dustin hoffman in straight time ending almost mirrors this scene. Check out the movie.
It's not that Natalie took his money and never returned. the mob that he double-crossed and triple-crossed has probably have her killed, as Mona has said would happened.
After watching the whole movie, and knowing what a dirtbag his character is, even then, it's almost too much to take the ending of the movie. You really have to go back and remember what a jerk the character is, to be able to not break down and cry for him...

quality vs quantity
Jack, I've known this feeling, too. Actually, I did have a six-month cycle. Stay "December 1st" with hp from Mark Isham and KNOW THE "G.O."
A heart wrenching scene. That music, and the empty desert (like his life without her)

Back again to watch this scene! Love it

This film has a great music score. Hauntingly noirish and beautiful.
True.
