- A black and white version Of Eva Unit 00 Throwing the lance into space.
I do not claim to own Neon Genesis Evangelion, And the scene was created by Gainax entertainment, I merely changed the colors.
Music is the Final part of Worthy is the Lamb by Handel's Messiah Thanks to Mauro Lugo for pointing this out.

Unit 00 throws the spear at an angle of 13°s and the spear also hits the AT field at the same angle, meaning that the spear doesnt suffer any balistic drop. Now the angel Arael appears to be at the same-ish altitude as the ISS at 408km but I'll round up to 420km because of memes. This means that the spear would have to travel about 1867.07282km. If it takes about 7.7 seconds for the spear to reach the AT field of Arael then the spear would have to travel at 242162.49m/s or mach 706 or 0.08% of the speed of light.
If the spear is about 3661095.04 metric tonnes in mass (i got this number by finding the length and average width of the spear to approximate its volume, then I gave it the density of iron) then the kinetic energy of the spear would be 1.07348 X10^5 petajoules or just over 1000 times as powerful as the Tsa Bomba nuclear bomb.

that, THAT is how you introduce a fucking OP LEGENDARY WEAPON, you build it up in the same episode is gonna be used, you make sure only the weapon CAN kill the enemy/solve the current problem AND, after it had it's decisive moment to shine you make sure there is a perfectly beliavable explanation as to why the MC won't just spam the hell out of it from that point onwards when facing any other threats, Longinus Lance people, if you ask me one of the pitch-perfect moments in evangelion.
I love that before this scene the majority of people would be like "Ok it's strong, but it can't defeat ANY angel" then it just completely fucking obliterates this huge angel in orbit with the strongest at field theyve ever seen and then it lands on the fucking moon

I think that we all can agree that every episode is masterpiece, from visual and audio perspectives. Every episode has it's own fantastic and unique features, scenes, sounds, music etc. Like this, for example. We see another beautiful and horrific angel, "the Hallelujah" on the background (which fits perfectly), and Lance of Longinium, which screams and moves, showing us that it is basically an alive weapon. This is fantastic. No words can describe this.
btw is not Hallelujah in background, is "Worthy is the Lamb" by GFH

Escape velocity on earth is 7 mi/s which is pretty darn fast.
I guess it's nothing in comparison to the power (physical and mental) needed to break AT-field
Not to mention that actually the energy needed to clear the storm clouds, and also all the clouds in a radius of thousands of km, is the same energy needed to wipe out entire continents.

I really like how the 10 seconds countdown is actually ten seconds long.
Versus the 5-minute countdown in End of Eva which is about 12 minutes long (yes I know it keeps jumping between like 5 different locations but still.)

It just recreates the manga feel. I remember that page when the Spear is being delivered by a f****ng AIRCRAFT CARRIER, taking up all of the deck's length! It looked chilling. The feeling of some chtonic (or cosmic for that matter), monstrous presence, that is infinitely bigger than us and is beyond our comprehension.
Except for the first few chapters, the anime was made before the manga. So it's less recreating and more creating.
I don't know I have to disagree. I think this scene works better IN colour. The entire episode it's dark drab grey weather. There's an angel approaching which can't be destroyed by any other means except by a last ditch plan, use one of the most valuable weapons they have. Using the weapon is a hefty sacrefice. So once the spear is thrown it removes the dark grey hopeless skies and makes way for a clear blue future meaning hope. Hope at a heavy cost.

That howl makes that scene. I couldnt watch the directors cut because the "cleaned" up the animation and mix of it, no give me the grit, give me the raw uninhibited expression

This is also a great moment for Rei and 00. She uses a weapon of magnificent power to its fullest potential, or very close to it, something which likely no other person could have done at that point. She is half-angel after all and carries the soul of one. I think her proficient use of the spear doesn't come out of nowehere.

But the Longinus Lance was created by humanity or is that an instrument created for angels? If it was created by humans, why does it have so much power?
The lances were gifted to each of the seeds of life (of which there are 7, Adam, Lilith and 5 unnamed others). One for Adam, another for lilith. the Lance being used here was originally Adam's, but due to the population of the Earth by Humanoids (or lillianoids for that matter), Adam was required by some divine law to stab himself with the lance and go dormant.
Effectively they are a giant control rod to shut down beings like Adam and Lillith by whatever God, Gods or other supremely powerful beings created the seeds of life. There's only been the one true lance, my guess is the ones used by the Mass Production EVAs were built using fragments of the second but that's just a theory.
