My great uncle Arnolds a Latvian Rifleman was killed on the Northern Front in March 1916. Seven years ago, my cousin in San Francisco found his photo with her mother's things and sent it to me asking who he was. My grandfather who had been a staff officer near Minsk in 1916, had left Riga in 1944 with this photo. He had lived in the camps in Germany, then gone to Dayton, Ohio to live with his sister who had left Latvia in the 1920s and eventually he settled in San Francisco with my aunt- the photo always travelling with him. This professional portrait shows a handsome young man anticipating his whole life ahead - which was not to be.
